  • This study aims to analyze the effect of hypertense, diabetic patients, managerial characteristics on their depression and suicidal thinking. Thus, this study selected 6,217 adults over the age of 19 from the 5th first-year data of Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by KCDC(Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in 2010. As factors having effect on their suicidal thinking, unmarried patients(p=.000), middle school(p=.045), high school(p=.015), college and higher(p=.018), medicare(p=.045), hypertense(p=.042), exercise walking irregularly(p=.021), sense of depression(p=.035) showed a higher rate of suicidal thinking which were found to be statistically significant variables. Hypertense show a higher rate of suicidal thinking than normal people. Accordingly, it is necessary not only to pay attention to establishing plans to provide Hypertense and Diabetic patients with medical treatments, but to have more concern about their mental health so that they may be provided with a political support future.

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the relationship between mental health status and suicidal thinking among cancer patients. Methods: The data set of the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (2009) was used and 230 subjects with cancers were included in the present study. Using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program, data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test and logistic regression analysis. Results: About one-third of subjects had stress, symptoms of depression and suicidal thinking. Female had more suicidal thinking than male (${\chi}^2$=5.44, p=.020). In addition, subjects with high income level had more thinking about suicide compared with those in low income level (${\chi}^2$=7.54, p=.023). There was a significant difference in suicidal thinking according to the educational levels (${\chi}^2$=13.25, p=.004). In the logistic regression analysis, it was indicated that gender, depression and stress were significant predictors on suicidal thinking, accounting for 26.7~38.1%. Conclusion: From the findings in this study, it was suggested that the healthcare providers should try to improve their mental health status in order to prevent suicidal thinking among the individuals diagnosed with cancer.

  • This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of hope between stress and suicidal ideation of adolescents. For the study, 399 adolescents were surveyed at 10 cities of Korea from May to August in 2010. Main results of the study were in the followings. First, it was found out that stress of adolescents was positively correlated with suicidal ideation, hope was negatively correlated with suicidal ideation, and stress influenced more suicidal ideation than hope. Second, suicidal ideation of adolescents tended to be low, stress was in the middle level, and agency and pathways thinking of hope was higher than middle level. Third, it was proved that agency and pathways thinking of hope was mediated between stress and suicidal ideation of adolescents. Lastly, for the female adolescents living in the metropolitan and large cities, only agency thinking of hope was mediated but pathways thinking was not mediated. Policy implications for preventing and decreasing adolescent's suicide were suggested.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the spouse effects on depressive symptom and suicidal thinking among the elderly aged 65 and over in Korea. The subjects selected from the database of the Fourth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES IV) conducted by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2007 to 2009. Those who were female, older, lower educated, or poorer were more likely to live alone than their counterparts respectively. The elderly living alone experienced depressive symptom as 2.0 times(OR=2.004, 95% CI=1.433, 2.803) as, and suicidal thinking as 1.6 times(OR=1.567, 95% CI=1.111, 2.211) as the elderly couples did, adjusting for socio-economic factor, health status factors, and health behaviors factors. As for the male subgroup, the elderly living alone experienced depressive symptom as 4.0 times(OR=3.997, 95% CI=2.066, 7.732) as, and suicidal thinking as 3.2 times(OR=3.181, 95% CI=1.535, 6.592) as the elderly couples did. On the other hands, there was no significant difference in depressive symptoms and suicidal thinking between the female elderly living alone and couples. The authors suggested policy interventions to promote the mental health of the male elderly living alone.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to implement a model for predicting the presence or absence of suicidal ideation in adolescents by using the decision tree analysis method. Methods: This study is a secondary data analysis using the 2019 Child and Adolescent Human Rights Survey, the most recent data published by the Korea Youth Policy Institute. In order to identify the variables predicting suicidal ideation, a decision tree analysis with suicidal ideation as a dependent variable was performed. Results: This study found that the variables of life satisfaction, insults from parents, sex, and cyber-bullying experience of adolescents were selected as significant predictors of suicidal ideation. It is predicted that 58.2% of subjects with low life satisfaction would think of suicide. Among them, the probability of thinking of suicide increased to 72.7% in the case of unhappy people, and the probability of thinking of suicide in the case of a woman increase to 82.9%. Conclusions: It is necessary to consider family, school, and society environment to prevent suicidal ideation of adolescents.

  • This study attempted to provide basic data for screening high-risk subjects by confirming suicidal thinking intensity and by identifying its influential factors in mid-aged men. Data No.3 from third National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2012 by the CDCP were used with 40-64 years middle-aged men targets. The collected data were analyzed via applying weight by using the complex sample analysis method of SPSS 19.0 program, frequency analysis, cross-analysis, and logistic regression analysis. The result revealed that 10% of middle-aged men showed suicidal thinking, and low-income earners had suicidal thinking 1.972 times higher than usual, the unmarried 2.587 times higher than men with spouses, men without spouses 1.482 times higher than men with spouses, the underweighted 18.183 times higher the obese. The blue-collared and the unemployed had suicidal thinking 1.349 and 13.342 times higher than the white-collared respectively. Furthermore, inactive subjects showed suicidal thinking 2.998 times higher than active subjects. Therefore, to prevent suicide in mid-aged men, separating these high-risk subjects in primary screening is needed for management, and suicide prevention programs should be developed at social and political level that include the information considering stress, depression, and obesity.

  • In this paper, we propose the basic data for cancer patient management by secondary analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey(KNHANES) to identify factors related to suicidal thinking of cancer patients over 19 years of age in Korean adults lapse of time. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS WIN 22.0 program in order to analyze the demographic, health, and mental characteristics of the subjects in 2009 and 2017. It was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. As a result of the study, the factors related to suicidal thinking in cancer patients were activity restriction and experience of depression in 2009(Negelkerke R2=.384), and age, marital status, activity restriction, and experience of depression in 2017(Negelkerke R2=.525). This study is meaningful in that the factors related to suicidal thoughts in cancer patients were identified according to the lapse of time, and the changes in the related factors were confirmed. Development and application of an intervention program to prevent suicide in cancer patients are necessary.

  • This study investigated factors that affect stress recognition, depression, suicidal thoughts and health-related quality of life for diabetics over 50 years of age. Five hundred one diabetics were surveyed who participated in the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009. The data were analyzed with multiple regression analysis and Structural Equation Model to determine the factors. The results are as follows. Men, older and lower income groups, those not involved in economic activities, smokers, and drinkers showed a lower quality of life (p<0.001). There was no correlation with moderate-intensity exercise. Stress recognition (t=-4.229, p<0.001), depression (t=-2.156, p<0.05), and suicidal thoughts (t=-3.274, p<0.001) had significant effects on the quality of life (p <0.001, $R^2=0.25$). The most important of these factors is stress. Being diagnosed as a diabetic changes the lives of patients, who come under stress from controlling their blood sugar level. Societal support should be developed to help patients cope with the challenges of diabetes.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of violence experience and self-esteem experienced in social scenes such as work and school on suicidal thoughts. For this purpose, I used the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family(2017)'s data of the current situation of social violence victims. To this end, descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical binary logistic regression analysis were performed. The findings of this study are as follows: The experience of social violence among North Korean refugee women had a positive effect on suicidal thoughts, and self-esteem had a negative effect on suicide-related features. This means that if you have experienced social violence, you are more likely to have suicidal thinking, and the higher your self-esteem is, the less likely your suicidal thinking is. Based upon the results of this study, practical intervention measures were proposed to prevent social violence, and to improve physical/mental health and self-esteem of North Korean refugee women.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify attitudes of adolescents toward suicide. Methods: Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used. Thirty middle and high school students classified 37 selected statements into a normal distribution using a 9 point scale. Collected data were analyzed using the Quanl PC Program. Results: Three types of attitudes toward suicide were identified. The first type (opposing suicide-moral minded) showed an attitude of opposing suicide and thinking that suicide is a sin. The second type (understanding-empathizing suicidal person) showed an attitude of understanding the situation of the adolescents who has suicidal ideation and empathizing with them. The third type (ambivalent attitude) showed an attitude of understanding the suicidal person but, at the same time, opposing suicide. Conclusion: Results of the study indicate that different approaches to suicide prevention programs should be developed based on the three types of suicide attitudes among adolescents.
