  • In this study, the sulfonated SBS cation-exchange membrane was prepared by post-sulfonation. Degree of sulfonation(DS), water-uptake, ion exchange capacity and electrical resistance and conductivity of sulfonated SBS were investigated as a function of sulfonation time. The DS of sulfonated SBS membrane was increased with increasing the reaction time and concentration of sulfuric acid. The maximum value of DS was 24.0%. And also, the water uptake and ion exchange capacity of the sulfonated SBS membrane were increased as increasing the value of DS. The values of water uptake and IEC were 41.2% and 0.80 meq/g, respectively. The electrical resistance and conductivity of the membrane showed $23.6{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and $4.24{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$, respectively.

  • In this study, the petroleum sulfonate(PS) was synthesized from pyolyzed fuel oil by sulfonation reaction with sulfuric acid. The PS synthesized had surfactant behaviors relating to the interfacial properties such as surface tension, surface adsorption, and wetting, etc. These interfacial properties were affected by the sulfonation ratio in the synthesis. As the sulfonation ratio increased, the surface tension of the PS aqueous solution decreased. However, when the ratio was too high, the surface tension was increased due to the extremely higher value of hydrophilicity of PS. At the optimum sulfonation ratio, the PS had a good wettability on the cement particles and a good fluidity of the cement mortar with a high adsorption.

  • A sulfonated PP-g-styrene ion-exchange hollow fiber membrane was prepared by pre-irradiation method with E-beam followed by sulfonation reaction. Degree of grafting increased with the increase of styrene monomer concentration and showed the maximum value of 128% at 80% of styrene monomer composition. Sulfonation yield increased with the degree of grafting. At 100% degree of grafting, sulfonation yield showed the maximum value of 13.4%. Ion exchange capacity of sulfonated HPP-g-styrene of 3.42 meq/g was attained, resulting in the remarkable increase of adsorption ability BET analysis proved that the surface area of sulfonated HPP-g-styrene was 62.54 $m^2/g$ and the mean pore size was 25 $\AA$. From the BSA adsorption experiments, the adsorption amount of BSA was increased with sulfonation. At 13.4% sulfonation yield the adsorption amount of BSA was maximum as 3.8 mg/g. Sulfonated HPP-g-styrene was synthesized successfully and suitable for the adsorption and separation of BSA.

  • In this study, ion exchange membranes were prepared using high impact polystyrene(HIPS) with various crosslinking and sulfonation time. Degree of sulfonation(DS) of sulfonated HIPS(SHIPS) membrane was increased with sulfonation time and decreased with crosslinking time. The highest value of DS was 66%. Also, water uptake and ion exchange capacity(IEC) of SHIPS membrane were decreased with degree of crosslinking and increased with sulfonation time. Then their values were 35.2% and 1.55 meq/g, respectively. Electrical resistance and ion conductivity of the membranes were showed more excellent value with sulfonation time. The maximum value of electrical resistance and ion conductivity were $0.4\Omega{\cdot}cm^{2}$ and 0.1 S/cm, respectively. It is indicated that the SHIPS membrane has the higher performance compare with Nafion 117. Durability of SHIPS membranes in a organic solvent was increased with increasing crosslinking time. The surface roughness of HIPS membranes were confirmed with SEM that was become uneven surface with progressing sulfonation.

  • In this study, polyetherimide with pellet state was sulfonated with a chlorosulfonic acid. The volume ratio of carbon tetrachloride (CCI$_4$/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) was 5/1. Therefore, sulfonated polyetherimide of anionic charge and more hydrophilicity were produced. The optimum reaction conditions of sulfonation were that PES/CSA mole ratio was I/I, temperature were lO$^{\circ}$ and reaction time were 3hr. SPEls having ion capacity in the range of 0.2-1.2meq/mg were synthesized. Through FT-IR, sulfonic acid peak was shown at 1020cm$^{-1}$ and 1170cm$^{-1}$ Polymer dispersity index was broad and we confirmed that PEl was hydrophilzed in the measure of contact angle.

  • To get the proper treatment conditions, sulfonation reactions of persimmon tannin with sodium sulfite and sulfuric acid were proceeded in various settings, respectively. Also, the property changes were investigated by carrying out the additional analysis: elementary analysis and instrumental analysis using FT-IR, DSC, and TGA. The degree of $-SO_3Na$ substitutions appeared 0.216 and 0.208 under the treatment time of 3 hours and 6 hours, respectively and the degree of $-SO_3H$ substitutions indicated 0.200 and 0.167 under 9 hours and 18 hours, respectively by elemental analysis. In terms of the FT-IR spectras, there was a peak based on the bonds of pyran ring and ether in relation to non-treated and sulphonated tannin at $1,102cm^{-1}$. No peak was shown in the sulfited tannin. An absorption peak which was due to the $C{\rightarrow}O$ of secondary -OH group became evident in nontreated and sulfited tannin at $1,092cm^{-1}$ and $1,090cm^{-1}$, respectively but the same result was not found in sulphonated tannin. The results of TGA analysis of the sulfonated persimmon tannin showed that the sulfonation of it improved thermal properties.

  • The destructed chips(Pinus rigida Mill) were sulfonated under different conditions and defiberated. The yields and strengths of pulp, fatty acid and resin acid in sulfonated chips were determined. The results of this work were as follows: 1) A sulfonation caused a yield reduction to 97.9~88.2% at single stage. and to 94.9~88.2% at two stage pretreatment. The pulp yields were rapidly draped with increasing cooking temperature from $130^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$ 2) Pulp strengths were improved with iacreasing cooking temperature. A sulfonation with 5% $Na_2SO_3$/NaOH(8/2) at single stage and 2% NaOH-5% $Na_2SO_3$ at two stage were most effective and gave the best combination of strength properteis. 3) Fatty acid esters in chips were mostly consisted of palmitic and olleic acid. During a sulfonation the former increased extensively, and the latter was lost with increase of cooking times. The amount of pimaric type in the chips was relatively decreased by the pretreatnent and abietic-type increased. But the changes between two resin acid types were insignificant. 4) The effciency of pitch removal was dependant upon cooking liquor pH. To remove sufficiently the resinous substance, the chips must be sulfonated at over pH 12. Therefore, taking account of pitch removel, two stage sulfonation is considered suitable as reinforcement pulp for newsprint manufacture from pitch pine chips : 2% NaOH($60^{\circ}C$ 1 hr) at first stage and 5% $Na_2SO_3$ ($130^{\circ}C$, 1hr) at secund stage.

  • A sulfonated star branched poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) triblock copolymer (SSBS) was synthesized with varying degrees of sulfonation. The effective sulfonation on the butadiene block was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Ion exchange capacity by titration was used to determine the degree of sulfonation. The synthesized polymer observed enhanced water uptake and proton conductivity. At room temperature, the SSBS with 25 mol% degree of sulfonation showed an outstanding proton conductivity of 0.114 S/cm, similar to that of commercial membrane, Nafion. The effect of temperature at constant relative humidity on conductivity resulted to a remarkable increase in proton conductivity. Methanol permeability studies showed a value lower than Nafion for all the sulfonated membranes. Structural nature observed using AFM showed that the membranes observed microphase separated nanostructures and the connectivity of the interionic channels.

  • Sulfonation of polyetheretherketones (PEEK) was carried out in order to fabricate commercial perfluorosulfonic acid membrane alternatives, which were characterized in terms of their ion exchange capacity, ionic conductivity, water swelling, methanol crossover and electrochemical performance in their direct application as a methanol fuel cell. A high ion exchange capacity, 1.88, was achieved with a sulfonation reaction time of 8 h, with a significantly low methanol crossover low compared to that of Nafion. However, the morphological stability was found to deteriorate for membranes with sulfonation reaction times exceeding 8 h. Electrochemical cell tests suggested that the fabrication parameters of the membrane electrode assembly based on the sulfonated PEEK membranes should be optimized with respect to the physicochemical properties of the newly prepared membranes.

  • New sulfonated amino ribofuranans were synthesized to elucidate the relationship between structure and specific biological activities such as anti-HIV and blood anticoagulant activities. The synthesis was performed by sulfonation of copolymers having various proportion of (1$\rightarrow5)-\alpha$-D-ribofuranosidic unit. The sulfonation with piperidine N-sulfonic acid produced the sulfonated amino ribofuranans in high yield. The anti-HIV activity of sulfonated 3-amino-3-deoxy-(1$\rightarrow5)-\alpha$-D-ribofuranan showed more potent by increasing the degree of sulfonation and the average molecular weights. This activity was almost equal to the activities of sulfonated ribofuranans and ribopyranans reported before in spite of low molecular weight. The blood anticoagulant activities was observed at 36-48 mg/units, more potent than standard dextran sulfonate, 22.7 mg/units. In addition, the blood anticoagulant activities of sulfamide-copolysaccharide consisting various proportion of (1$\rightarrow5)-\alpha$-D-ribofuranan units were potentiated by increasing sulfonated amino-ribofuranan units from 13 to 21 mg/units.
