Residues of Co-planar PCBs in Ginseng at Environment of North Gyeongbuk (경북 북부 인삼 재배환경 중 Co-planar PCBs의 잔류)

  • Co-planar PCBs(polychlorinated biphenyls) of non-ortho are investigated in soil and ginseng on the North Gyeongbuk with HRGC/HRMS. PCB77 in soil on Yeongju and Sangju are detected 0.0007 pgTEQ/g and 0.0009 pgTEQ/g, respectively. PCB81 in soil on Yeongju and Sangju are detected 0.0113 pgTEQ/g and 0.0108 pgTEQ/g, respectively. Also PCB126 in soil on Yeongju and Sangju are detected 0.0907 pgTEQ/g and 0.0944 pgTEQ/g, respectively. But PCB169 in soil on Yeongju and Sangju is not detected. Total Co-planar PCBs of non-ortho in soil on Yeongju and Sangju are 0.1027 pgTEQ/g and 0.1061 pgTEQ/g, respectively. PCB77 in ginseng on Yeongju and Sangju are detected 0.0008 pgTEQ/g. Then PCB81 in ginseng on Yeongju and Sangju are detected 0.0104 pgTEQ/g and 0.0112 pgTEQ/g, respectively. But PCB126 in ginseng on Yeongju and Sangju are detected 0.0585 pgTEQ/g and 0.0579 pgTEQ/g, respectively. PCB169 in ginseng on Yeongju and Sangju is not detected. Total Co-planar PCBs of non-ortho in ginseng on Yeongju and Sangju are 0.0697 pgTEQ/g and 0.0700 pgTEQ/g, respectively. Relationship of PCBs in between soil and ginseng shown significance($R^2$ : 0.99).

A Temporal Trend of Dioxins Levels in Environmental Media

  • This study is to investigate the environmental levels and trend of dioxins, which was the 3$\^$rd/ year of environmental monitoring research for endocrine disrupting chemicals since 1999. Total 282 samples were analyzed from 115 sites including 26 sites of airs, 43 sites of waters, 11 sites of sediments and 35 sites of soil, which were the same as those of investigated sites in 2000. Sampling period was from June 2001 to June 2002. Target chemicals were seventeen species of 2,3,7,8-chlorine-substituted PCDD and PCDF congeners and were analyzed by the standard methods, established by National Institute Environmental Research (NIER). The average concentration of dioxins in air decreased from 0.324 pg-TEQ/N㎥ in 2000 to 0.287 pg-TEQ/N㎥ in 2001, and those in water and soil were 0.073pg-TEQ/L and 1.703pg-TEQ/dry g, respectively, which was the less values detected in 2000. In sediment, however, the value was 0.086pg-TEQ/dry g, which was the increase from the value of the year 2000. The concentration range of dioxins in air for 26 sites in 17 regions detected were 0.013∼l.664pg-TEQ/N㎥, 4 sites from those were exceeded the Air Quality Standards of Dioxin in Japan (0.6 pg-TEQ/N㎥). The tolerable daily intake of dioxins was calculated at the highest level (1.664) in air, with referring the soil and food data from Japan, was calculated to be 2.85pg-TEQ/kg/day, which was below the level of 4 pg-TEQ/kg/day suggested in KFDA(Korea). While the average concentration of dioxins in 15 big cities was 0.190 pg-TEQ/N㎥, that in 8 medium/small cities constituting an industrial complex was 0.558 pg-TEQ/N㎥. In water, the concentration range detected were 0∼0.946pg-TEQ/L and the trend of the average concentrations shows an increase from those of 1999 but decreased from those of 2000, any sites however were not exceeded the Water Quality Standards of Dioxin in Japan (1 pg- TEQ/L). In soil. the detected range were 0∼43.333 pg-TEQ/dry g and the average concentration decreased, compared with the results of 2000. According to the monitoring results by land utilization, the detected range were 0∼43.333pg-TEQ/dry g in farmland, 0.017∼0.601 pg-TEQ/dry g in the industrial area, 0.005∼0.049pg-TEQ/dry g in the park and 0.008∼1.825 pg-TEQ/dry g in the rest. In sediment, the detected range increased from 0∼0.244 pg-TEQ/dry g to 0∼0.537 pg-TEQ/dry g, based on the results of 2000. For the proper control of dioxins, continuous monitoring needs to be performed and in addition, the dioxin inventory should be prepared for major sources through the dioxin emission survey. These results would provide sound and solid basis for proper decision making of dioxins management like establishment of environmental quality standards in Korea.

Exposure assessment of dioxins through foods (식품을 통한 다이옥신류의 노출 평가)

  • A total 221 samples of the retailed foods collected from 2004 to 2007 was examined to estimate the level of dioxins(29 congeners) by the isotopic dilution method, and the exposure of population of Korean to dietary of dioxins was performed. Dioxins levels were calculated using TEF values established in 1998 and 2005, respectively. The average levels (pg TEQ/g) were less than 0.01 for polished rice, 0.04 (poultry)-0.13 (beef) for meats, 0.04 (milk)-0.05(cheese) for milk and dairy products, 0.13 for egg (york, only) and 0.11 (alaska pollack)-1.35 (pacific mackerel) for fishes. The estimated daily intake of Korean through foods was 0.47 pg TEQ/kg bw/day, and it was estimated as about 11% to tolerable daily intake (TDI; 4 pg TEQ/kg bw/day) of Korea and Japan. Consequently, it was concluded that there was no health risk.

The Concentrations and TEQ Levels of PCDFs and PCDDs in Human Adipose Tissue and First Breast Milk of Korean (체지방 조직 및 초유중에 잔류되어 있는 다이옥신 함유도에 관한 연구)

  • The concentrations and TEQ levels of PCDFs/PCDDs in human aipose tissue and first breast milk were analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry. The human adipose tissue samples measured in this study have been collected at hospital in Seoul. The total concentration and TEQ level of PCDFs were showed 5.812 pg/g and 1.485 pgTEQ/g. The total concentration and TEQ level of PCDDs were showed 26.648 pg/g and 1.176 pgTEQ/g, respectively. This paper also reported dioxin levels in 20 breast milks of Korean mothers from hospital in Seoul National University. Total concentration and TEQ levels of PCDFs were showed 7.019 pg/mL and 0.177 pgTEQ/mL, respectively. Total concentrations and TEQ levels of PCDDs were showed 14.224 pg/mL and 0.693 pgTEQ/mL, respectively. According to the contribution of dioxin congeners in samples, PCDDs was higher than PCDFs. And OCDD had the highest concentration.

Efficient time domain equalizer design for DWMT data transmission (DWMT 데이타 전송을 위한 효율적인 시간영역 등화기 설계)

  • In this paper, an efficient time domain equalization algorithm for discrete wavelet multitone(DWMT) data transmission is developed. In this algorithm, the time domain equalizer(TEQ) consists of two stages, i.e., the channel impulse response shortening equalizer(TEQ-S) in the first stage and the channel frequency flattening equalizer(TEQ-F) in the second stage. TEQ-S reduces the length of transmission channel impulse response to decrease intersymbol interference(ISI) followed by TEQ-F that enhances the channel frequency response characteristics to the level of an ideal channel, hence diminishes the bit error rate. TEQ-S is implemented using the least-squares(LS) method, while TEQ-F is designed by using the least mean-square(LMS) algorithm. Since DWMT system also requires of the frequency domain equalizer in order to further reduce ICI and ISI the hardware complexity is an another concern. However, by adopting an well designed and trained TEQ, the hardware complexity of the whole DWMT system can be greatly reduced.

Residue and Risk Assessment of Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofurans in the Korean Population (다이옥신류에 의한 한국인의 폭로 현황 및 리스크 평가)

  • The human adipose and milk samples analyzed in this study were collected at hospitals in Seoul, Masan and Jinju. The mean values of International Dioxin Toxic Equivalents (I-TEQ) of PCDDs and PCDFs in human adipose samples from the three regions were calculated as 9 pg I-TEQ/g(0.2 ~ 30 pg TEQ/g, lipid weight basis) and 8 pg I-TEQ/g (0.8 ~ 25 pg TEQ/g), respectively. The residue levels of PCDDs-TEQ and PCDFs-TEQ in human milk collected from Masan were 13 pg I-TEQ/g (lipid wt.) and 4.8 pg I-TEQ/g, respectively. On the whole, the contamination levels of these compounds in the Korean population were lower than those in the other countries. Based on the analytical data and assuming a daily intake consumption of 800 mL milk with 3% fat, the average daily intake of PCDDs/DFs via human milk for a baby weighing 5 Kg could be calculated. The daily intake of PCDDs/DFs via breast-feeding was estimated to be 39 pg/kg body weight/day for 2,3,7,8-TeCDD and 86 pg/kg/day for TEQ. These levels are far above all virtually safe dose(VSD) or tolerable daily intake(TDI) values proposed by health authorities in various countries, ranging from 0.001(US EPA) to 4 pg/kag/day (WHO).

Residues of Dioxins in Soil Cultured Ginseng of North Gyeongbuk (경북북부 인삼 재배 토양 중 Dioxins의 잔류)

  • PCDDs(Polychlorinated dibenzo-$p$-dioxins) and PCDFs(polychlorinated dibenzofurans) are measured in soil of Yeungju and Sangju on North Gyeongbuk to investigate the risk assessment of dioxins. Dioxins are analyzed by HRGC/HRMS(high resolution gas chromatography - high resolution mass spectrometer). 2,3,7,8-T4CDD and 1,2,3,7,8-Pe5CDD in soil on Yeungju and Sangju are not detected. Also, 2,3,7,8-T4CDF is not detected in soil on Yeungju and Sangju. PCDDs and PCDFs in Yeungju soil are 1.957 pg/g and 0.294 pg/g, respectively. Total of dioxins in Yeungju soil are 2.251 pg/g. PCDDs and PCDFs in Sangju soil are 1.220 pg/g and 0.420 pg/g, respectively. Total of dioxins in Sangju soil are 1.640 pg/g. PCDDs and PCDFs in Yeungju soil are 0.0049 pg WHO-TEQ/g and 0.0123 pg WHO-TEQ/g, respectively. Total of dioxins with PCDDs and PCDFs in Yeungju soil are 0.0172 pg WHO-TEQ/g. PCDDs and PCDFs in Sangju soil are 0.0065 pg WHO-TEQ/g and 0.0213 pg WHO-TEQ/g, respectively. Total of dioxins with PCDDs and PCDFs in Sangju soil are 0.0278 pg WHO-TEQ/g. Amount for pg/g concentration unit of PCDDs is higher than amount of PCDFs in soil. But, WHO-TEQ of PCDFs is higher than WHO-TEQ of PCDDs in soil.

Concentration and Characteristics of PCDDs/DFs in Soil at Cheongju City (청주시 토양 중 다이옥신 농도 및 특성)

  • To investigate concentration and characteristics of dioxins in soil at Cheongju city, total 28 soil samples were collected. The total and I-TEQ concentration of 17 PCDDs/DFs ranged from 2.30 to 630.40 pg/g dry weight and from 0.002 to 9.79 pg I-TEQ/g dry weight with averages of 55.42 pg/g and 1.13 pg I-TEQ/g, respectively. These levels are very lower than those of around various incinerators in Korea (from n.d. to 153.23 with average value of 7.36 I-TEQ/g). The correlation between total concentration and TEQ concentration showed significant with 99% confidence interval (p-value < 0.001). The TEQ concentration as land use was high as follows; industrial area> green area> residential and commercial area> farm land. In terms of congener distribution, OCDD which is highly detected in general soil samples, was predominant and showed various fraction (from 23 to 100%). The ratios of PCDF concentration against to PCDD concentration varied as samples (from 0.1 to 2.4).

A Study on the PCBs-containing Waste Treatment by High Temperature Incineration (고온소각에 의한 PCBs 함유 폐기물처리에 관한 연구)

  • This study is for understanding the domestic possibilities of the high temperature incineration of waste containing Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) with the analysis of normal operation case and waste gas, fly ash, dioxin about bottom ash, Total-PCBs, Co-PCBs, and the for analysis the heavy metal leaching feature included by bottom ash and fly ash, heavy metal leaching experiment was implemented. The result shows the dioxin density of the waste gas from waste containing PCBs was $0.00699{\sim}0.00763ng-TEQ/Nm^3$, which is lower than $0.0192ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ from the normal operation case. And each Co-PCBs and total PCBs shows $0.00043{\sim}0.00112ng-TEQ/Nm^3$ and $3.06{\sim}3.87ng/m^3$ respectively. The bottom ash test result shows Dioxin 0.00225~0.00630ng-TEQ/g, Co-PCBs 0.00027~0.00082ng-TEQ/g, Total PCBs 0.9~2.6ng/g, and the fly ash shows Dioxin 0.00164~0.00344ng-TEQ/g, Co-PCBs 0.00053~0.00054ng-EQ/g, Total PCBs 0.64~0.84ng/g. The bottom ash and fly ash experiments for heavy metal leaching did not show any leaching but when it comes to the ingredients of the fly ash, Pb elements shows 31.01~237.7ppm, higher than leaching criterion. The analysis of the density of all air pollution material from the waste gas shows the lower value than permissible criterion.

The Removal of Dioxins and the Formation of 2, 3, 7, 8-TeCDF in Drinking Water Treatment in Japan (정수처리에서의 다이옥신 제거 및 2, 3, 7, 8-TeCDF 생성)

  • To evaluate homologue patterns and removal efficiency before and after water treatment, the concentrations of dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs) were determined in 122 samples from 42 drinking water treatment plants throughout Japan over a two year period. The mean concentrations and toxic equivalent (TEQ) values of dioxins in raw and treated waters were 60.24 pg/L (0.14 pg-WHO-TEQ/L) and 4.15 pg/L (0.016 pg-WHO-TEQ/L), respectively. The dioxins contribution ratio of drinking water in relation to dioxins tolerable daily intake (TDI, 4 pg-TEQ/kg/day) was 0.016%. The mean TEQ removal rate of dioxins by drinking water treatment was over 88%. However, the mean removal rate of 2, 3, 7, 8-TeCDF (tetrachlorodibenzofuran) by water treatment in the 122 samples was minus 17%. Therefore, to identify which process affected the level of 2, 3, 7, 8-TeCDF, the removal efficiencies at both the advanced and conventional water treatment plants were investigated. For the TEQ removal rate across the processes, the dioxin congeners, TeCDF and non-ortho-PCBs remarkably indicated minus values after chlorination in both the advanced and conventional water treatments plant. From this study, the level of 2, 3, 7, 8-TeCDF was found to be increased as a result of chlorination.
