A Searching Technique of the Weak Connectivity Boundary using Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle in Wireless Tactical Data Networks (무선 전술 데이터 네트워크에서 소형 무안항공기를 이용한 연결성 약화 지역 탐색 기법)

  • Since tactical robots are going to be grown and tactical data communications will be more network-centric, the reliability of wireless tactical data networks is going to be very important in the future. However, the connectivity of such wireless tactical data networks can be extremely uncertain in practical circumstances. In this paper, we propose a searching technique to find out the weak boundary area of the network connectivity using a small UAV(unmanned aerial vehicle) which has a simple polling access function to wireless nodes on the ground in wireless tactical data networks. The UA V calculates the network topology of the wireless tactical data networks and coverts it to the Lapalcian matrix. In the proposed algorithm, we iteratively search the eigenvalues and find a minimum cut in the network resulting in finding the weak boundary of the connectivity for the wireless tactical data networks. If a UAV works as a relay nodes for the weak area, we evaluate that the throughput performance of the proposed algorithm outperforms star connection method and MST(minimum Spanning Tree) connection method. The proposed algorithm can be applied for recovering the connectivity of wireless tactical data networks.

Discrete Noise Prediction of Small-Scale Propeller for a Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (소형 전술급 무인항공기 프로펠러의 이산소음 수치해석)

  • Discrete noise signals from a small scale tactical unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) propeller were predicted numerically using time domain approach. Two-bladed 29 inch propeller in diameter and 150 kgf in gross weight were used for main parameters of the UAV based on the actual size of the similar scale vehicle. Panel method and Farassat formula A1 were adopted for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analysis respectively. Time domain signals of both thickness and loading noises were transformed into frequency domain to analyze the discrete noise characteristics. Directivity pattern in a plane perpendicular to the rotating disc plane and attenuation of noise intensity according to double distance were also presented.

  • As the performance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are improving and the prices are lowering, it is expected that the use of UAVs will continuously grow in the future. It is important to always maintain control signal and video communication to operate remote UAVs stably, especially in military UAV operations, as unexpected jamming attacks can result in fatal UAV crashes. In this paper, to improve the network reliability and low latency when supporting UAV operations, the anti-jamming performance of Second generation Anti-jam Tactical UHF Radio for NATO (SATURN) networks is analyzed and enhanced by applying Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) modulation as well as Hamming code based multiple transmission techniques.

  • Acquiring precise coordinates of ground targets can be regarded as the key mission of the tactical-level military UAS(Unmanned Aerial System) operations. The coordinates deviations for the ground targets estimated from UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) images may depend on the sensor specifications and slant ranges between UAV and ground targets. It has an order of several tens to hundreds of meters for typical tactical UAV mission scenarios. In this paper, we propose a scheme that precisely acquires target coordinates from UAS by mapping image pixels to geographical coordinates based on GCP(Ground Control Points). This scheme was implemented and tested from ground control station for UAS. We took images of targets of which exact location is known and acquired the target coordinates using our proposed scheme. The experimental results showed that errors of the acquired coordinates remained within an order of several meters and the coordinates accuracy was significantly improved.

  • This paper presents the case study of the airworthiness certification for the flight control system of tactical UAV. Airworthiness regulations for flight characteristics and design and construction based on the STANAG 4671 are selected, and safety assessment is performed. Stall protection on wing level and turning flight criteria, and flap interconnection system failures were analyzed and applied to the flight control system design. The Hardware-in-the-loop simulation including math model, integrated system verification and validation test and failure mode and effects test were also performed and they are used to validate the means of compliance of the proposed airworthiness.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been considered as valuable aerial reconnaissance systems and our army wants capability-enhanced UAVs installed in our territory, hoping that the UAVs will provide enemy information in detail. The enemy information acqcuired by UAVs would be shared by our army's legacy systems. In this article, we made a research on the interoperability between UAVs and Ground Fighting Vehicles (GFVs), laying emphasis on what kinds of tactical information could be exchanged by two different weapon systems. Also, it needs to be addressed that their upper-level commanding systems play a significant role in such operation.

A Resource Scheduling Based on Iterative Sorting for Long-Distance Airborne Tactical Communication in Hub Network (허브 네트워크에서의 장거리 공중 전술 통신을 위한 반복 정렬 기반의 자원 스케줄링 기법)

  • In this paper, a novel resource scheduling, which is used for hub network based long distance airborne tactical communication, is proposed. Recently, some countries of the world has concentrated on developing data rate and networking performance of CDL, striving to keep pace with modern warfare, which is changed into NCW. And our government has also developed the next generation high capacity CDL. In hub network, a typical communication structure of CDL, hybrid FDMA/TDMA can be considered to exchange high rate data among multiple UAVs simultaneously, within limited bandwidth. However, due to different RTT and traffic size of UAV, idle time resource and unnecessary packet transmission delay can occur. And these losses can reduce entire efficiency of hub network in long distance communication. Therefore, in this paper, we propose RTT and data traffic size based UAV scheduling, which selects time/frequency resource of UAVs by using iterative sorting algorithm. The simulation results verified that the proposed scheme improves data rate and packet delay performance in low complexity.

Air Path Establishment Based on Multi-Criteria Decision Making Method in Tactical Ad Hoc Networks (전술 애드혹 네트워크에서 다속성 의사결정 방법 기반 공중 경로 생성 방안)

  • Multipath routing protocols with unmanned aerial vehicles have been proposed to improve reliability in tactical ad hoc networks. Most of existing studies tend to establish the paths with multiple metrics. However, these approaches suffer from link loss and congestion problems according to the network condition because they apply same metric for both ground and air path or employ the simple weight value to combine multiple metrics. To overcome this limitation, in this study, we propose new routing metrics for path over unmanned aerial vehicles and use the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method to determine the weight factors between multiple metrics. For the case studies, we extend the ad-hoc on-demand distance vector protocol and propose a strategy for modifying the route discovery and route recovery procedure. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism is able to achieve high end-to-end reliability and low end-to-end delay in tactical ad hoc networks.

  • The modern battlefield is being developed as a network-centric warfare where priority is given to rapid status grasp and power deployment through scientification and modernization. Therefore, tactical data link has been continuously improving the network speed, and recently, security technology is required for wireless communication with the UAV and various devices for reconnaissance. In addition, the future information warfare will utilize advanced IT technology positively. Efforts are needed to integrate various systems and networks. However, these efforts are meaningful only when they can assume sufficient security in a newly changing information and communication environment. In this paper, we propose a new cryptographic synchronization for link encryption suitable for tactical data links. The proposed cryptographic synchronization is useful for T4 UAV link encryption, and it is also adaptable for lower BER, then we analyze the performances analysis of that.

  • In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the future battlefield will carry out multi-area operations with hyper-connected, high-speed and mobile systems. In order to prepare for changes in the future, the Korean military intends to develop various weapons systems and form a multi-layer tactical network to support On The Move communication. However, current tactical networks are limited in support of On The Move communications. In other words, the operation of multi-beam antennas is necessary to efficiently construct a multi-layer tactical network in future warfare. Therefore, in this paper, we look at the need for multi-beam antennas through the operational scenario of a multi-layer tactical network. In addition, based on development consideration factors, features of rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, we present the location and operation of airborne relay drone installations of multi-beam antennas.
