Objective: Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) is one of the representative prescriptions for invigoration of vitality and nourishing of the blood. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) on hair regrowth and cytokine changes in a shaving model of C57BL6 mice. Method: Five-week-old mice were acclimated for 1 week at a temperature between $21-23^{\circ}C{\acute{E}}$, 40-60% relative humidity, and 12h of a light/dark cycle before beginning of the experiment. There were two groups including normal saline (control) and a positive control of oral intake of Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) extract (sample) in 18 female mice. The test compounds were topically treated once a day over 14 days. The hair regrowth was photographically and histologically determined during the experimental period of 14 days. Revelation of TGF-${\beta}1$ and EGF were also determined using immunohistochemistry. In addition to that, IFN-$\gamma$, IL-4 and IL-10 were determined in serum. Results: Hair regrowth in the sample group was promoted earlier and faster than the control group, as shown by concentrations of hairs and thick-hair ratio in the sample group. TGF-${\beta}1$ was not revealed in either control or sample group. EGF was strongly positive in out root sheath of some thick hair of the sample group. Serum IFN-$\gamma$ was significantly decreased in the sample group compared with the control group at 7 experimental days. However, it was not significantly decreased at 14 experimental days. Serum IL-4 was significantly increased in the sample group compared with the control group at 7 experimental days. However, it was not significantly decreased at 14 experimental days. Serum IL-10 was decreased in the sample group compared with the control group, but with no real statistical significance. Conclusion: These results suggest that Yikgeebohyul-tang (Yiqib$\check{u}$xu$\grave{e}$-t$\bar{a}$ng) has hair growth promoting activity and it can be used for treatment of alopecia. Also, these effects relate to EGF revelation of hair roots, a decrease in serum IFN-$\gamma$, and an increase of serum IL-4.
Samples were collected from five stations in February, May, July, and September 2004 to investigate seasonal variations in the phytoplankton community and the relationship between dominant genera and environmental factors in Asan Bay. In February, microphytoplankton contributed 80% to the total chlorophyll a. Diatom dominated the phytoplankton community, accounting for 85.9% of the total cell number, followed by dinoflagellates (6%). Dominant species were Skeletonema costatum and Thalassiosira spp. Abundant diatom, including S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp., may be affected by water temperature and silicate at Station 1 and 2 in February 2004. In May, the nanophytoplankton contribution to total phytoplankton was higher than in other seasons. However, abundance of S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp. decreased, since the growth of S. costatum and Thalassiosira spp. might be limited by phosphates (P) resulting from low P concentration and a high DIN:DIP ratio in the outer region. In July, dominant phytoplankton groups were diatom (39%), cryptophyceae (28%), and cyanophyceae (20%). Dominant genera were Oscillatoria spp. and phytoflagellate of a monad type in the inner region (Station 1 and 2), whereas S. costatum was dominant in the outer region (Station 4 and 5). In September, dominant phytoplankton were diatom (69%) and cryptophyceae (28%). Dominant genera were phytoflagellate of the monad type, S. costatum in the inner region, while Chaetoceros spp. was dominant in the outer region.
During the 1st Korea-Russia Arctic Expedition from 3 to 26 August, 2000 phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentration were measured in the Barents and Kara Seas. Total of 57 surface samples were collected f3r the phytoplankton related measurements. Chlorophyll a (chi a) concentraitons were measured to investigate the relations between physico-chemical factors and phytoplankton biomass distribution. Chl a values ranged from 0.14 to $2.34mg\;m^{-3}$ (mean of $0.65{\pm}0.42mg\;m^{-3}$) over the surface stations. The elevated values of the chi a concentrations $(1.49{\sim}2.34mg\;m^{-3})$ were found in the southeastern Barents Sea near the Pechora River. Nanoplanktonic $(<20{\mu}m)$ phytoflagellates were the important contributors for the increase of the chi a. The nano-sized phytoflagellates accounted for more than 80% of the total chi a biomass in the study area. Mean chi a concentration in the Barents Sea $(0.72{\pm}0.57 mg\;m^{-3})$ was higher than in the Kan Sea $(0.52{\pm}0.45mg\;m^{-3})$, but there was no big difference between two areas. Surface temperatures and salinities ranged from 4.1 to $11.7^{\circ}C$ (mean of $8.8{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$) and from 23.8 to 32.5psu (mean of $30.3{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$ psu), respectively. The physical factors were not highly correlated with phytoplankton distribution. It is speculated that the insignificant correlation between phytoplankton biomass and physical factor was due to the same current which introduced similar water mass with higher water temperature and lower salinity into the study area. The mean values of major nutrients such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were $0.42{\pm}0.31{\mu}M,\;0.10{\pm}0.03{\mu}M,\;1.44{\pm}1.03{\mu}M,\;0.35{\pm}0.12{\mu}M,\;10.99{\pm}3.45{\pm}M$, respectively. The relations between phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentration were not close, indicating that the surface nutrient concentrations during the study seem to be controlled by other physical factors such as input of fresh water (i.e. dilution effects).
Ongoing port baseline surveys are essential for developing ballast water management procedures in order to control unwanted or potentially risky species. Seasonal distributional patterns of marine dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans internationally recognized as harmful species and the related environmental factors were surveyed at Incheon, Gwangyang and Ulsan seaports in Korea from 2007 to 2009. The above three seaports were chosen because of their status as the busiest in Korea and characterized by their different bioregions. Average temperature ranged from $2.08^{\circ}C$ in winter to $26.39^{\circ}C$ in summer at Incheon, $7.22^{\circ}C$ in winter to $25.77^{\circ}C$ in summer at Gwangyang, and $11.59^{\circ}C$ in winter to $21.67^{\circ}C$ in summer at Ulsan during the study period. Average salinity varied from 26.88 in winter to 31.25 in summer at Incheon, 22.83 in winter to 33.41 in summer at Gwangyang, and 30.04 in winter to 33.90 in summer at Ulsan. Noctiluca scintillans appeared consistently at all ports during the study period, indicating its eurythermal and euryhaline nature. The highest abundances (21,813 to 41,753 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$) of N. scintillans were observed in May 2008 and 2009 at the outer stations of Incheon port. Abundances of between 10,000 and 30,000 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$ were only observed at the innermost station of Ulsan in May, while abundances of between 10,000 and 40,000 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$ were frequently observed throughout all stations at Gwangyang during the study period, coinciding with consistently high concentration of chlorophyll-a (hereafter chl-a) ($4.32-8.24\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$) compared to other ports. Spatio-temporal variation of chl-a concentration was not significantly correlated with abundances of N. scintillans (p>0.01). However, relatively high chl-a concentrations were consistently recorded along with high abundances of N. scintillans throughout all stations at Gwangyang compared to other ports. Abundances of N. scintillans observed at the three surveyed ports did not significantly (p>0.01) affect the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the surface mixed layer, indicating that the species abundances were not enough to cause reduction of dissolved oxygen during the study period. Presented results indicated that the Gwangyang seaport may provide the most suitable environment for a wide range of N. scintillans blooming compared to other ports.

This study has been to produce of anti-H. pylori antibody in milk produced from cows immunized with antigen of Helicobacter pylori and to search the relationship between vaccine dosage and antibody formation and impact of vaccine dosage on cows. The content of anti-H. pylori antibody in serum and whey increased in accordance with vaccine dosage volume. It has been confirmed that the formation of high-quantified antibody was produced in all groups with vaccine dosages of 10 mL, 20 mL and 30 mL. It has been turned out that the antibody was formed most in 20 mL dosage. It was inclined to $12\%$ reduce caused by vaccine injection, but recovered after about maximum 1 week. In measurement of body temperature of cows after vaccine injected, it was inclined to rise with the normal scope in comparison with the controlled conditions.

The extracellular enzyme alginase produced by Bacillus licheniformis AL-577 was purified by ion chromatography on CM-Cellulose column, DEAE-Sepharose column, and followed by gel filtration on Sephadx G-100 column. The optimum pH and temperature for the activity of the purified enzyme were 6.0 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enzyme was stable at the pH range of $6.0\~9.0$ and at $20^{\circ}C$. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be about 25,500 daltons by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. NaCl was required for high activity of the enzyme. The enzyme was inhibited by $Ba^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Mg^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;NH_4^+$, EDTA, L-cysteine, and 2-mercaptoethanol, while stimulated by DTT, O-phenanthroline, $K^+$ and $Li^+$. This enzyme was proposed to be an alginase specifically degrading alginic acid.

The optimization of ethanol treatment was carried out by response surface methodology (RSM) which was expressed through change of ${\Delta}$E value for improvement of color of dried large anchovy. The optimum condition was shown as treatment with 7 volumes (v/m) of ethanol at $50^{\circ}C$ for 9 hrs. At this condition, the removal rates of trimethylamine (TMA) and fat considered as fishy odor-causing materials were 81.1 and $77.4\%$, respectively, when analyzed by solid phase microextraction (SPME)/gas chromatography and soxhlet method, respectively The effect of citric acid on the removal rate of TMA was the highest one among organic acid treatments. The removal rate of TMA was affected greatly by the concentration of organic acid rather than the temperature and time of treatment. $73\%$ of TMA was removed by treatment of $1\%$ of citric acid at $20^{\circ}C$ for 20 min. Specially, above $90\%$ of TMA could be removed by the combination of alcohol and citric acid treatment. In vitro absorption rate of calcium was also increased to $12.3\%$ by the combination of alcohol and citric acid treatment compared with $2.9\%$ of control.

The effects of various seasoning components, pH of seasoning solution, heating time and storage temperature were investigated on the color and textural properties of the salted radish root (nanmooji) The effects of individual seasoning components in the salted radish root, additives of polyphosphate (AD3), citric acid (AD5), malic acid (AD2) delayed the color changes and softening more, compared to control soaked in water. On the other hand, additives of potassium sorbate (AD1), succinic acid (AD7), MSG (AD8), saccharin (AD6) accelerated the color changes and softening of the salted radish roots. The effects of pH of seasoning solution($X_1$), and heating time ($X_2$) were central composite design and response surface analysis. R- square represented dependent variables correlated independent variables ($X_1,\;X_2$), showed over 0.8 in the color and area value calculated thickness and firmness of salted radish root. Especially, R- square of 'b' represented 'yellow-green' was 0.899. And the result of crossing analysis of individual independent variables ($X_1,\;X_2$), showed that both independent variables had significant effects on the color and textural changes of the salted radish root. The salted radish root increased its color changes and softening, rapidly at $40^{\circ}C$, compared to the other storage temperatures at most storage periods.

The dropwort was fermented by steeping with brown sugar, fructose syrup or oligosaccharide at room temperature for 2 month, and then stored at cold room for 6 months. The dropwort extracts prepared with three different sugars showed more than $50^{\circ}$Brix, below pH 4.0 and about $0.7\%$ titratable acidity. The dropwort extract with brown sugar showed $1.6{\times}10^6$ viable cell counts and $21.2\%$ reducing sugar. Formation of $CO_2$ gas was superior to the dropwort fermented with brown sugar or oligosaccharide. The dropwort extract with fructose syrup indicated $9.0{\times}10^3$ viable cell counts and $50.1\%$ reducing sugar. Microorganism present in fermented dropwort extract was effectively pasteurized by the addition of $3\%$ citric acid and heat-treatment at $85^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, resulting in the less production of $CO_2$ gas. The dropwort extracts prepared with brownsugar, fructose syrup or oligosaccharide was suitable for the standardization that required for plant extract in Korea Food Codex.

Clarified orange juice was prepared using different clarification methods including centrifugation, enzyme treatment, ultrafiltration (UF), and combined treatment(CT). Effect of clarification methods as well as other quality parameters were investigated. Clarification was improved with increase in centrifugation speed and by lowering operating temperature. The optimum condition for centrifugation process was $5^{\circ}C$ and 10,000 rpm. UF and CT processes were very effective to produce clarified orange juice. The optimum condition of UF process was $45^{\circ}C$ and 150 kPa considering flux and turbidity CT did not significantly improve the clarification efficiency since most of the clarification was already achieved during UF process. $L^*$-values increased while $a^*$-values decreased significantly after clarification regardless of methods (p<0.05) Considering color, and recovering rate of vitamin C and soluble solids, UF process was superior than the other methods in producing clarified orange juice.
