  • Recently, as the proportion of the elderly population in Korea has increased rapidly, it has entered an aging society. As the scope of social activities of the elderly increases, the risk of safety accidents is also increasing. The traffic accident rate of elderly pedestrians is higher than ordinary people. Although various smart devices for the elderly are researched and developed, electronic components are often used. Electronic devices may not be able to be used if charging is not regularly. In this paper, a smart hat, a smart system for the elderly and the weak, was implemented using solar panels. The system uses solar energy to provide reliable use of smart devices. It is believed to be helpful not only for the elderly but also for the weak people by easy to wear the hat.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was investigate the empowerment, health behavior and life satisfaction in elderly home residents according to living situations. Method: Data were collected from September to October, 2005. The participants were 240 elderly people who lived at home. Date were collected using structured questionnaire and analysed using t-test, ANOVA, Sheffe test. Result: Empowerment in elderly home residents according to living situations was significantly different(F=3.35, p=.006). Health behavior in elderly home residents according to living situations was not different significantly(F=.88, p=.492). However, questionnaire of "only the elderly couple lives" showed the highest health behavior score as an average 3.05$({\pm}.24)$. Life satisfaction in elderly home residents according to living situations was not different significantly(F=1.67, p=.143). There was a positive correlation between empowerment, health behaviors and life satisfaction. Conclusion: Considering that the single home which only the elderly people reside is the one of general family patterns of the aged people, the elderly people shall acknowledge the difference of values between a family pattern which takes a serious view of family or sons/daughters and a family pattern which reflects a weak supporting consciousness by a nuclear family. Based on above facts, Nurses should develope the nursing strategies to promote life satisfaction in the elderly.

For autumn season, they preferred beige, brown or grey colors most. With regard to materials for suit, they liked wool solid fabrics with stretch. As for a blouse, they preferred a single color most. There were significant difference between preference suit design and Assumption of buying suit design.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between oral health conditions and their subjective oral health perception in the elderly in Gimcheon. Methods: The study subjects were 214 elderly aged over 65 years old in Gimcheon. The study was carried out by direct interview method of from February 20 to 24, 2014. The oral examination was performed by the dentist base on the World Health Organization criteria including direct examination and observation. The questionnaire consisted of sex, type of family, use of medical services, and oral health behavior, The independent variable included three questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, two questions of use of medical services, and two questions of oral health behavior. The subjective oral health perception was composed of heathy and unhealthy. The objective oral health condition was evaluated by number of residual teeth, FT index, MT index, and DMFT index. Results: In the elderly, the number of residual tooth was $8.89{\pm}9.72$ and the number of decayed teeth was $0.03{\pm}0.20$. The numbers of missing teeth and filled teeth were $19.26{\pm}9.65$ and $0.28{\pm}1.01$, respectively. The DMFT index was $19.57{\pm}9.28$. In relation to the subjective oral health perception, 76.6% answered 'good' and 23.4% answered 'bad'. The subjective oral health perception showed a weak quantitative linear relationship of r=0.235 with the number of residual tooth. the subjective oral health perception showed a weak negative linear relationship(p<0.01) of r=-0.225 with the number of missing teeth and r=-0.217 with DMFT(number of decayed missing and filled teeth) index.

  • The develop a simple screening test for identifying Korean elderly at risk of undernutrition, the data of the health-related habits, dietary behaviors and nutrient intakes of the elderly in Chongju were analyzed. Two risk indicators, mean adequacy ratio (MAR) and the respondents perceived health, were used to detect the undernutrition risk of the elderly. In order to select a list of questions for the test, factors a affecting nutritional status and items investigated in previous nutrition surveys of the elderly were considered, and 21 questions were primarily selected. A multiple regression and stepwise regression analysis were used to take out the weak predictors of poor nutrient intake, and to give item weights to the strong predictors, and a list of 17 questions was finally adopted. To determine the cut-point of the test score, sensitivity, and positive predictive values were calculated. The Simple Screening Test developed in this study is a brief, easily scored tool to predict poor nutrient intake and the perceived health status of the elderly. The test may provide a basis of further comprehensive nutritional assessment or intervention planning, if necessary, for those who are diagnosed ad "high risk". The test, however, needs to be independently validated by other groups of individuals.dividuals.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze physical characteristics, spatial composition, and using behavior of lounges in elderly skilled nursing facilities as spaces for activity programs and also to evaluate the spaces with the framework based on the indices for performing activity programs in elderly facilities. The results of the study were as follows: First, the lounge of an independent type ensured the privacy to perform programs, and so activities were managed more systematically. On the other hand, an expanded corridor type made the elderly feel difficult to pay attention to activities due to co-use of lounges and corridors. In a lounge of a hall type, the elderly had easy access to the place, but it also had weak home-like atmosphere because the space was used as a lobby entrance. Second, the facilities with western types of tables in whole lounges showed big changes in spatial composition, such as moving all the tables for any activities. It resulted in more preparation time and created obstacles in passages and space use. Third, in the evaluation of lounges based on the framework, most of lounges had accessibility of good quality, but they needed to improve home-like atmosphere and flexibility. To create home-like atmosphere, various spatial compositions and classifications in the lounge should be tried. Moreover, enough space and easy movable furniture can be considered for flexible spatial compositions.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand differences in cognitive function and the instrumental activities of daily living depending on whether elderly women living alone in Korea have depression and to determine the correlation between variables. The data were collected from April 2011 to April 2012 with a total of 1,426 women interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Based on examining the correlation between variables, a weak inverse correlation was shown between depression and cognitive function(r=-.208, p<.001), between cognitive function and the instrumental activities of daily living(r=-.256, p<.001), and a weak positive correlation was shown between depression and instrumental activities of daily living(r=.222, p<.001). According to these results, We should pay attention to come up with ways to promote and maintain the mental health of elderly women so that depression level can be reduced through the improvement of cognitive function and social activity level.

  • This study intended to provide the inherent characteristics of weak pedestrian including walking speed and perception-reaction time and to propose pedestrian signal timing models considering those characteristics. To collect the relevant data, field studies were conducted in virtual crosswalk environments. Walking speed were found to be 0.63 m/s and 0.57 m/s for children and the elderly, respectively. However, the elderly had higher perception-reaction time than children. By considering these characteristics, two pedestrian signal timing models were developed. Sensitivity analysis results showed that the models can produce reasonable ranges of pedestrian signal time. The data in this paper can be used for future references, and the mobility of weak pedestrian may be improved by applying the models suggested in this paper.
