  • The purpose of this study is to develop a numerical method for analyzing the transient heat transfer and evaluating the residual stress. The analysis of heat transfer and thermal stress are carried out by three-dimensional finite element method. Thermal spraying is one of the most common surface coating techniques to be used for many applications. In order to improve the mechanical properties of flame-sprayed ceramic coating layer, the accurate and effective analysis of heat transfer and thermal stress is essentially required.

  • The pupose of this study is to improve the mechanical properies and to evaluate the residual stresses of flame-sprayed Alumina ceramic coating layer. The first work in this study is to investigate the effects of strengthening heat treatments on the mechanical properties of coating layer. Strengthening heat treatments for sprayed specimens were carried out in vaccum furnace. The mechanical properties such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance, adhesive strength and erosion resistance were tested for the sprayed specimens after strengthening heat treatments. And it was clear that the mechanical properties of coating layer were much improved by strengthening heat treatments. The second work in this study is to evalute the residual stresses in coating lsyer by numerical analysis. FDM and FEM were used to analyze temperature distribution and residul stresses in coating layer. It was proved that are tensile stresses in coating layer and that residual stresses can be controlled by the appropriate selection of the spraying parameters such as preheat temperature, coating thickness and bond coat thickness.

  • This study is to investigate the wear behaviors of thermally sprayed ceramic coating by a pin-on-disk wear testing machine. The test specimens were plasma sprayed TiO2 coating material on carbon steel substrate(S45C) with Ni-4.5%Al alloy bond coating. Wear characteristics, friction coefficient and wear rates, were conducted at the three kinds of loads and velosities. Wear environments were dry and lubrication friction. The friction coefficients of TiO2 coating specimen in dry friction were almost same according to increase the friction velocity. The wear rate increased when the friction force is high. In lubrication friction, the wear hardly occured and friction coefficient was about 0.1. The adhesiveness of TiO2 in lubrication friction is larger than that in dry one.

  • Sink roll has been used in molten 55%Al-Zn alloy bath of continuous galvanizing line for sinking and stabilizing working steel strip in molten metal bath. In the process, the sink roll body inevitably build up dross compounds and pitting on the sink roll surface during 55%Al-Zn alloy coated strip production, and the life time of the sink roll is shorten by build up dross compounds and pitting. The present study examined the application of thermally sprayed ceramic coatings method on sink roll body for improving erosion resistance at molten 55% Al-Zn pool. In this experiment, the stainless steels such as STS 316L and STS 430F were used as the substrate materials. The CoNiCr and WE-Co powder were selected as bond coating materials. Moreover $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiO_2 and ZrO_2-SiO_2$ powders selected as the top coating materials. Appearances of the specimens before and after dipping to molten 55%Al-Zn pool were compared and analyzed. As a result of this study, STS430F of substrate, WC-Co of bond spray coatings, $ZrO_2-SiO_2$ power of top spray coatings is the best quality in erosion resistance test at molten 55%Al-Zn pool

  • Thermal spray coating is formed by a process in which melted particles flying with high speed towards substrate, then crash and spread on the substrate surface cooled and solidified in a very short time, Stacking of the particles makes coating. In this study, the exfoliation of $Al_2$O$_3$ and Ni-4.5wt.%Al thermally sprayed coating which were deposited by an atmospheric plasma spray apparatus are investigated using an AE method. A tensile test is conducted on notch specimens in a stress range below the elastic limit of substrate. The wave forms of AE generated from the three coating specimens can be classified by FFT analysis into two types which low frequency(type I waveform is considered to corresponds exfoliation of coating layers and type II waveform corresponds the plastic deformation of notch tip or the resultant fracture of coating. The fracture of the coating layers can estimate by AE event and amplitude, because AE features increase when the deformation generates.

  • In the present study, $TiB_2-Co$ composite coatings were thermally sprayed onto the surface of a 304 stainless steel substrate using an atmospheric plasma spray (APS). The phase analysis of the powders and plasma-sprayed coatings was performed using X-ray diffractometry analysis. The microstructures of the coatings were studied by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The average particle size and flowability of the feedstocks were also measured. Both $TiB_2-32Co$ and $TiB_2-45Co$ (wt.%) coatings possessed typical dense lamellar structures and high-quality adhesion to the substrate. The oxidation behaviors of the coatings were studied at $900^{\circ}C$ in an atmospheric environment. In addition, the cross-sectional images of the oxidized coatings were analyzed by SEM. A thin and well-adhered layer was formed on the surface of both $TiB_2-Co$ coatings, confirming satisfactory high-temperature oxidation resistance. The kinetic curves corresponding to the isothermal oxidation of the coatings illustrated a short transient stage from rapid to slow oxidation during the early portion of the oxidation experiment.

  • Chromium carbides have the excellent wear properties as transition metal carbides. Their tribological applications were studied recently. The nano-sized ceramic could enhance the mechanical and electronical properties of materials. In this study, it was observed to test the wear of the coated surface of nano-sized chromium carbides. The nano-sized chromium carbides were produced by sol-gel processing. Coating surface of produced powders was obtained front plasma spraying. Wear test of coating surface was held increasing temperature. The friction coefficient and the wear loss were testified in dry environment. And the worn surfaces were analyzed by XRD and SEM.
