The Concept design of Tilting system for Express tilting train for contentional line (기존선 고속화 차량의 틸팅시스템 개념설계 연구)

  • Tilting system allow the train to pass curve at higher speed without affecting passenger comfort. As the tilting trains offer the optimum means of providing faster and more comportable rail service with minimum of environmental disturbance and capital investment, more than 14 countries have now adopted or are about to adopt tilting train technology. The Korean National Railroad is also planing to apply faster tilting train to the areas where the High speed rail service are not provided. This paper shows the concept design of Bogie and Tilting system for 180 km/h Express tilting train for Korean conventional line, which was done as a part of the KNR's R&D project.

  • The application of the tilting train is one of the most efficient ways to increase curving speed of train on existing tracks or on mountain railway lines with sharp curves. It can increase the running speed and ensure the passenger comfort and safety at the same time. Therefore, the development of tilting train has been paid high attention by many countries in the world. Tilting trains have been operated successfully in many countries such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden, England and so on. The tilting trains possess broad prospects in raising speeds. The distributed EMU tilting train set will be developed according to the Korea railway conditions and will be operated on the Honam line, Janghang line and Jungang line. Because there is high percentage of curves on these lines. these lines are suited to operating tilting trains to raising speed and saving passenger traveling time. In order. to improve the curving performance of the tilling train. the active-control algorithm is utilized for the tilting bogie.

  • In this paper, we describe the analysis of interior noise for tilting train that is being developed in Korea. Tilting train is made of composite material to reduce the car body's weight and attached a self-steering system on bogie to improve curving performance. However, the acoustic performance (Transmission Loss) of such material is worse than the materials of conventional train, such as aluminum, steel and so on. Therefore, we measure the transmission loss of side wall / floor of tiling train and predict the interior noise for tilting train using its measuring results

  • This paper has evaluated the fatigue strength of a tilting bogie frame for the Korean tilting train. We have established the loading combinations for the tilting bogie frame based on the UIC standard because there are no standards for the tilting train. For this study, we have derived 31 load cases to consider tilting effect. Then, we have performed the static and fatigue analysis. From this study, we can make sure the safety of the tilting bogie.

  • In this study, we have performed investigation of safety for turnover in the tilting train. In the tilting train, the safety for turnover is one of the most important studies because the train incline the carbody inward curve during curve negotiation. Therefore, we have carried out dynamic analysis considering wind force and unbalanced lateral acceleration effects. From this study, we have evaluate the safety for turnover according to the design parameters of the tilting link mechanism.

  • This study presents parametric studies for design of tiling mechanism to be used in 180km/h tilting train. The titling mechanism is composed of 4 links, a tilting bolster and an electro-mechanical actuator. First we have determined the installation height of tilting actuator using 3D tilting bogie modeling. Secondary, we verified movements of the tiling center and train body CG along variation of upper and lower span length. From this study, we obtained the upper and lower span length to minimize the lateral and vertical motion of CG of train body. Finally, we evaluated the tilting actuator force and power required to tilt the train body to $\pm$8$^{\circ}$.

  • Korean Tilting trains have been tested on conventional lines since the beginning of 2007 for evaluating its reliability. We achieved some major performance tests which are the maximum operation speed, 180km/h test and the maximum curves increasing speed, over 30 percentage comparing with non-tilling operation train. In order to analysis reliability data of tilting train, we have used the special system engineering frame with interfacing between component suppliers effectively. And also we have developed the data aquisition system which consists of monitor, sensors and depot computer etc. As a results of calculation, until now we realized that the reliability are getting more increasing than starting point of running field test.

  • Abstract Tilting train has been developed to increase the oprational speed of the trains on conventional lines which have many curves. This train are tilted at curves to compensate for unbalanced carbody centrifugal acceleration to a greater extent than compensation produced by the track cant, so that passengers do not feel centrifugal acceleration and thus trains can run at higher speed at curves. This paper developed PDM(product data management) to make a system engineering of TTX(Tilting Train eXpress) with maximum operation speed 180 km/h.
