  • The creep characteristics of concrete under tensile stress has been usually assumed to have the same characteristics as that under compressive stress in the time-dependent analysis of concrete structures. However, it appears from the recent experimental studies that tensile creep behavior is much different from compressive one. In particular, high sustaining tensile stress may cause time-dependent cracking and thus lead to tensile failure. It is, therefore, necessary to model the tensile creep behavior accurately for realistic time-dependent analysis of concrete structures. The present paper to have been focused to suggested more realistic model for the tensile creep behavior of concrete. The models are compared with tensile creep test data available in the literature. The proposed model may allow more refined analysis of concrete structures under time-dependent loading.

  • In this paper, the non-linear time-dependent closed-form, discrete and combined solutions for the post-elastic response of a geometrically and physically non-linear suspended cable to a uniformly distributed load considering the creep effects, are presented. The time-dependent closed-form method for the particularly straightforward determination of a vertical uniformly distributed load applied over the entire span of a cable and the accompanying deflection at time t corresponding to the elastic limit and/or to the elastic region, post-elastic and failure range of a suspended cable is described. The actual stress-strain properties of steel cables as well as creep of cables and their rheological characteristics are considered. In this solution, applying the Irvine's theory, the direct use of experimental data, such as the actual stress-strain and strain-time properties of high-strength steel cables, is implemented. The results obtained by the closed-form solution, i.e., a load corresponding to the elastic limit, post-elastic and failure range at time t, enable the direct use in the discrete non-linear time-dependent post-elastic analysis of a suspended cable. This initial value of load is necessary for the non-linear time-dependent elastic and post-elastic discrete analysis, concerning incremental and iterative solution strategies with tangent modulus concept. At each time step, the suspended cable is analyzed under the applied load and imposed deformations originated due to creep. This combined time-dependent approach, based on the closed-form solution and on the FEM, allows a prediction of the required load that occurs in the post-elastic region. The application of the described methods and derived equations is illustrated by numerical examples.

  • This paper deals with a research about the time-dependent behavior analysis for pre-tensioned high-performance concrete(HPC) members. By improving AASHTO-LRFD(2004) method for predicting the creep and shrinkage of normal concrete, and the relaxation of prestressing tendon, a time-dependent behavior analysis of high-performance concrete structures has been introduced. Two methods, the step-function method and the time-step method have been incorporated in the time-dependent analysis. The developed program can predict the initial and time-dependent losses of prestressing forces and the deflections of high-performance concrete structures. The present model has been verified by comparing with the experimental results from the test of time-dependent behaviors of pre-tensioned members using high-performance concrete. From this, the current model gives good relations with the experimental results, but the AASHTO method is not good for the prediction of time-dependent behaviors of high-performance concrete members.

  • This paper presents the vibration analysis of a deploying beam with spin when the beam has a time-dependent spinning speed. In the previous studies for the deploying beams with spin, the spinning speed was time-independent. However, it is more reasonable to consider the time-dependent spinning speed. The present study introduces the time-dependent spinning speed in the modeling. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and von Karman nonlinear strain theory are used together to derive the equations of motion. After the equations of motion are transformed into the weak forms, the weak forms are discretized. The natural frequency and dynamic response are obtained. The effect of the time-dependent spinning speed on the dynamic response is studied.

  • Due to the time-dependent properties of materials, structures, and loads, accurate time-dependent effects analysis and precise construction controls are very significant for rational analysis and design and saving project cost. Elevation control is an important part of the time-dependent construction control in supertall structures. Since supertall structures have numerous floors, heavy loads, long construction times, demanding processes, and are typically located in the soft coastal soil areas, both the time-dependent features of superstructure and settlement are very obvious. By using the time-dependent coupling effect analysis method, this paper compares Shanghai Tower's vertical deformation calculation and elevation control scheme, considering foundation differential settlement. The results show that the foundation differential settlement cannot be ignored in vertical deformation calculations and elevation control for supertall structures. The impact of foundation differential settlement for elevation compensation and pre-adjustment length can be divided into direct and indirect effects. Meanwhile, in the engineering practice of elevation control for supertall structures, it is recommended to adopt the multi-level elevation control method with relative elevation control and design elevation control, without considering the overall settlement in the construction process.

  • Tunneling in rocks having the time-dependent behavior, causes some difficulties like tunnel convergence and, as a result, pressure on concrete lining; and so instability on this structure. In this paper the time-dependent behaviour of squeezing phenomenon in a large cross section tunnel was investigated as a case study: Alborz tunnel. Then, time-dependent behaviour of Alborz tunnel was evaluated using FLAC2D based on the finite difference numerical method. A Burger-creep viscoelastic model was used in numerical analysis. Using numerical analysis, the long-time effect of squeezing on lining stability was simulated. This study is done for primary lining (for 2 years) and permanent lining (for 100 years), under squeezing situations. The response of lining is discussed base on Thrust Force-Bending Moment and Thrust Force-Shear Force diagrams analysing. The results determined the importance of consideration of time-dependent behaviour of tunnel that structural forces in concrete lining will grow in consider with time pass and after 70 years can cause instability in creepy rock masses section of tunnel. To show the importance of time-dependent behavior consideration of rocks, elastic and Mohr-Coulomb models are evaluated at the end.

  • Structural health monitoring systems are often installed on bridges to provide assessments of the need for structural maintenance and repair. Damage or deterioration may be detected by observation of changes in bridge characteristics evaluated from measured structural responses. However, construction materials such as concrete and steel cables exhibit certain time-dependent behaviour, which also results in changes in structural characteristics. If these are not accounted for properly, false alarms may arise. This paper proposes a systematic and efficient method to study the time-dependent effects on the dynamic properties of cable-stayed bridges. After establishing the finite element model of a cable-stayed bridge taking into account geometric nonlinearities and time-dependent behaviour, long-term time-dependent analysis is carried out by time integration. Then the dynamic properties of the bridge after a certain period can be obtained. The effects of time-dependent behaviour of construction materials on the dynamic properties of typical cable-stayed bridges are investigated in detail.

  • Under sustained loads, the deformation of a structure gradually increase with time and eventually may be much greater than its instantaneous value, This inelastic and time-dependent deformation causes increase in deflection and curvature, redistribution of stress and internal action, In this paper, time-dependent analysis with creep and shrinkage of uncracked and cracked partially prestressed concrete flexural members is presented.

  • This paper presents an analytical procedure for the time-dependent analysis of the multi-story prestressed concrete structure under the construction stage. To account for the actual structural behavior, the procedure considers the effects due to the construction interval and the time-dependent losses of prestress at every construction step on the entire structural response. A numerical study is performed to demonstrate the general validity of the approach and to quantitatively evaluate the effects resulted from the time-dependent behaviors during construction. Recommendations and conclusions are developed by comparisons with structural responses using the present and conventional methods of analysis. The comparative results show that both effects of sequential construction and time-dependent prestress losses should be considered for the construction stage analysis.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop of unbonded tendon model considering time-dependent behavior. In this paper, a numerical model for unbanded tendon is proposed based on the finite element method, which can represent straight or curved unbonded tendon behavior. This model and time-dependent material model are used to investigate the time-dependent behaviors of unbonded prestressed concrete structures. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of concrete structures was used. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression, and shear models of cracked concrete and models for reinforcements and tendons in the concrete. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. It accounts for the aging, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressing steel. The proposed unbonded tendon model and numerical method for time-dependent behavior of unbonded prestressed concrete structures is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
