  • A 2-year-old male Tosa was admitted for treatment of a non-healing wound on the right forelimb. Skin tests were unremarkable; however, the lesion contained severe proliferative tissue. Surgical treatment was conducted due to the extensive skin defect and granulation tissue present. Following removal of the proliferative tissue, the wound was closed using the adjustable horizontal mattress suture method with multiple punctate relaxing incisions. The proliferative tissue healed completely after the surgical treatment. This technique can be considered an alternative treatment for the proliferative tissue when conditions require a skin graft or flap after surgical treatment.

  • To know the effect of Ivermectin(IVM) toxicity in testis, histopathologic changes as well as clinical signs were observed in experimental animals including dogs by the subcutaneous injection with 3-50mg/kg of IVM. Clinically, it was observed to have depression and ataxia in all groups whereas tremor and coma in mice, rats and guinea pigs, coma in hamsters and rabbits, and tremor and salivation in dogs were shown. The clinical signs were different by the dosage of IVM, species and individuals in all animals. Susceptibility to IVM was most sensitive in dogs, especially in a Tosa dog and this was susceptible in mice, hamsters and rabbits, guinea pigs and rats in order. Microscopical observation revealed that the seminiferous tubules of testis had decreased thickness of germinal epithelium due to the necrosis and desquamation of the spermatids and spermatocytes. The progressive pattern by the times of administration showed vacuolar formation between the layer of spermatids and spermatogonia due to the marked necrosis of spermatocytes and the presence of multinucleated giant cells derived from spermatid throughout the seminiferous tubules of testis. Only a layer of spermatogonia, a few spermatogonia, and Sertoli cells wore observed with atrophied wavelike basement membrane in the seminiferous tubules of testis. Necrotic germinal cells, sloughed immature spermatids and spermatocytes were present in the lumen of epididymis and ductus deferens. Microscopical observation showed different susceptibility to IVM with clinical observation in which it was also most sensitive in dogs, especially in a Tosa dog and this was susceptible in rabbits and guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice in order. It was considered that IVM affects mainly spermatocyte or spermatid stage in the spermatogenesis and disturbs their developing beyond these stage.

  • A 3-year-old male Tosa was presented the severe dyspnea, emaciation and dehy dration. By echocardiograpy, right ventricle was found to be a mobile mass dynamically occluding the right ostium atrioventriculare in the systolic phase. At necropsy, 14 days after ultrasonography multiple tumor masses of various size were observed in the heart base, right ventricular lumen, myocardium, lung and liver. Histopathologically, the tumor cells, arranged in sheets or nests, were diagnosed as metastatic intracavitary cardiac aortic body tumor

  • A 3 years-old male Tosa dog was referred to Seoul National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with a history of difficulty in mastication. Clinical signs of dropped jaw, drooling, mild depression and dehydration were observed. According to history taking, physical examination, neurologic examination, complete blood count (CBC), serum chemical profile and radiography, the dog was diagnosed as idiopathic trigeminal nerve paralysis. Electroacupuncture treatment was applied to the dog on local and distal point at an interval of 7 days. Local points were GB-1 (Tong Zi Liao) of gall bladder meridian and ST-7 (Xia Guan) of stomach meridian. Distal points were PC-4 (Xi Men), PC-6 (Nei Guan) of pericardium meridian. Electrical stimulus was performed for 20 minutes at the frequency of 3 Hz, 3 Volts on ST-7. Ten days after the initial electroacupuncture treatment, clinical signs related to trigeminal nerve paralysis were almost disappeared.

  • A 4-month-old, intact male, Tosa with a history of a regurgitation, vomiting, and weight loss for three weeks was presented to Animal Medical Center, Chonbuk National University. In Serial plain radiographs, a severely distended stomach was seen and ultrasonogram revealed a nonfunctional pylorus with normal layer comparable with an obstruction of pyloric region by pyloric achalasia. An esophagram and endoscopy revealed normal peristalsis with failure of the lower esophageal sphincter to open, supporting the diagnosis of esophageal achalasia. Megaesophagus was observed on reradiograph and esophagram 11 days later. The clinical signs and esophageal dilation were resolved without resorting to any treatment.

  • Two bitches were presented to the Teaching Animal Hospital, Chonbuk National University with vagina prolapse along with prolapse of the bladder. Case 1 was a 2 years old, 38.5 kg, female Tosa dog which had slight shock and depression. She had a labor pain vagina prolapse since last 3 days. Case 2 was a 2 years old, 25 kg, female Rottweiler dog which was presented with the similar clinical signs with case 1. In both the dogs we performed plain radiography, CBC, blood chemistry and urine analysis. In case 1, we performed cesarean section along with the repositioning the vagina and the bladder. We found 13 fetuses among which 7 were alive. In case 2, we also performed cesarean section and recovered the fetuses. There were 7 fetuses but only one was alive. Among the 6 dead fetuses 3 were congenitally deformed. Then we reduced prolapsed vagina and bladder, and repositioned them. After that we performed ovariohysterectomy. Both the bitches become recovered from the prolapse of the vagina and bladder and there was no recurrence of the condition.

  • Canine dermatosis associated with zinc deficiency naturally occurred in three districts of Kyungpook. A diagnosis was made by clinical findings, clinico-pathological examinations, skin biopsy, and therapeutic tests. The result was diagnosed as a zinc-deficient dermatosis. The disease occurred in rapidly growing Tosa-dog hybrids 5 to 7 months old. Skin lesions included erytherma, alopecia, crusting, scaling around the mouth, eyes, legs and tail. Clinico-pathological findings were decreased serum zinc levels, slightly increased white blood cells, and secondary Staphylococcus intermedius infection of the crusts. The skin biopsies for histopathological examination revealed marked parakeratotic hyperkeratosis. The patients with skin lesions were successfully treated by zinc methonine(Zinpro) medication In conclusion, serum zinc level and skin biopsy are very helpful in diagnosis of canine zinc-deficient dermatosis.
