In general, for the condition monitoring of a power transformer using the UHF PD measuring technique, detection of any partial discharge, identifying the defect in the transformer and locating the insulation defect are necessary. In this paper one of the most frequent detects which can result in turn to turn fault in power transformer was examined for identifying the defect. In order to model the defect, as a discharge source, a partial discharge cell was used for experimental activity. Magnitude of electromagnetic wave signals and corresponding amount of apparent discharge were measured simultaneously against phase of applied voltage to the discharge cell. Frequency range and phase resolved partial discharge signals were measured and analyzed. The results will be contributed to build the defect database of power transformer and to decrease the occurrence of transformer faults.
The life of transformer is significantly dependent on the thermal behavior in windings. To analyse winding temperature rise, many transformer designer have calculated temperature distribution and hot spot point by finite element method(FEM). Recently, numerical analyses of transformer are studied for optimum design, that is electric field analysis, magnetic field, potential vibration, thermal distribution and thermal stress. Therefore design time and design cost are decreased by numerical analysis. In this paper, the temperature distribution and thermal stress analysis of 50kVA pole cast resin transformer for power distribution are investigated by FEM program. The temperature change according to load rates of transformer also have been investigated. We have carried out temperature rise test and test results are compared with simulation data.

At the moment of transformer energization by the supply voltage, a high current called transient inrush current, which may rise to ten times the transformer full load current, could be drawn by the primary winding. This paper discusses a microcontroller circuit with the intention of controlling and limiting the inrush current for a transformer, by the method of ramping up the supply voltage feeding to the transformer primary. Simulations and the experimental results show a significant reduction of inrush current, when the ramping up voltage is applied to the three-phase transformer load. The inrush current could be almost eliminated if the correct switching step rate is chosen.
Power transformer is one of the most important equipments in electrical power system. The detection of certain gases generated in transformer is the first indication of a malfunction that may lead to failure if not detected. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) of transformer oil has been one of the most reliable techniques to detect the incipient faults. Many conventional DGA methods have been developed to interpret DGA results obtained from gas chromatography. Although these methods are widely used in the world, they sometimes fail to diagnose, especially when DGA results falls outside conventional method codes or when more than one fault exist in transformer. To overcome these limitations, fuzzy inference system (FIS) is proposed. 250 different cases are used to test the accuracy of various DGA methods in interpreting the transformer condition.
Recently harmonics flowing into power system is increasing as the usage of semiconductor equipments and switching mode power equipments are increasing. Harmonics cause problems such as heat increasing and reduction in capacity of transformers, especially the harmonics flowing into a distribution transformer can lead to the lifetime reduction of transformer. In this paper, we are about to develop a device that can monitor harmonics in real-time as it is affixed to a distribution transformer. Unlike the existing expensive harmonic analysis device, a new harmonic analysis algorithm is proposed in order to implement low-cost equipment. The real-time harmonic analysis algorithm proposed in this paper allows implementation on low performance microcontrollers, thus it can monitor the harmonic in real-time as it is individually affixed to the transformer. Therefore, it would improve the reliability of the transformer and stable power system operation would be possible as it can prevent the transformer accidents in advance.
For the analysis of characteristics of a superconducting transformer, we designed and fabricated a 5kVA superconducting transformer with two kinds of secondary winding. Using the results of the open and short tests, we calculated the parameters of its equivalent circuit. We designed also a 5kVA conventional transformer with the same design conditions as the superconducting one. The performances of the superconducting transformer were compared with the performances of the designed conventional transformer and another 5kVA distribution transformer.
The high temperature super-conductor transformer gains interests from the industries. This paper described construction and test results of a 10kVA HTS transformer. Three phase transformer with double pancake windings were constructed. BSCCO-2223 wire, silicon sheet steel core and FRP cryostats were used in that transformer After the test of basic properties of the 3 phase HTS transformer using no load test, short ciucuit test and full load test, continuous operation of 100 hours with pure resistive load has been carried out. Test proved over-load capability and reliability of the HTS transformer.
In this paper, the electrical characteristics of the non-contact transformer is presented using conventional coupled inductor theory. Each non-contact transformer is analyzed through simulation and measurement. In high power applications, non-contact transformer is so bulky and heavy that it should be split by some light transformers. So non-contact transformer needs several small transformer modules which are connected series or parallel to transfer the primary power to the secondary one. This paper shows analytic result of the each non-contact transformer module and comparison result between series-connection and parallel-connection of the non-contact transformer. The results are verified on the simulation based on the theoretical analysis and the 30kW experimental prototype.

This paper investigates and analyzes the installation and failure status of mold transformer being used in domestic subways and describes the extinguishing process by time through the combustion test of winding part of mold transformer. Condition of installed mold transformers and classes of fire were surveyed and the mold transformer was burned in a horizontal heating furnace. It was confirmed that the mold transformer is self extinguishing and nonflammability. According to this results, the suitable standard of fire protection for the mold transformer was demanded after review of domestic and abroad law. It is expected that the cost of fire protection equipment can be reduced by using the status and combustion test result of mold transformer.
The flyback topology is being widely used in power adapters. The coupling capacitance between primary and secondary windings of a flyback transformer is the main path for common-mode (CM) noise conduction. A Y-cap is usually used to effectively suppress EMI noise. However, this results in problems in space, cost, and the danger of safety leakage current. In this paper, the CM noise behaviors due to the electric field coupling of the transformer windings in a flyback adapter with synchronous rectification are analyzed. Then a scheme with balance winding is proposed to reduce the CM noise with a transformer winding design that eliminates the Y-cap. The planar transformer has advantages in terms of its low profile, good heat dissipation and good stray parameter consistency. Based on the proposed scheme, with the help of a full-wave simulation tool, the key parameter influences of the transformer PCB winding design on CM noise are further analyzed. Finally, a PCB transformer for an 18W adapter is designed and tested to verify the effectiveness of the balance winding scheme.
