Political Discourse Among Key Twitter Users: The Case Of Sejong City In South Korea

  • This paper examines communication patterns of key Twitter users by considering the socially and politically controversial Sejong City issue in South Korea. The network and message data were drawn from twtkr.com. Social network-based indicators and visualization methods were used to analyze political discourse among key Twitter users over time and illustrate various types of Tweets by these users and the interconnection between these key users. In addition, the study examines general Twitter users' participation in the discussion on the issue. The results indicate that some Twitter profiles of media outlets tend to be very dominant in terms of their message output, whereas their Tweets are not likely to be circulated by other users. Noteworthy is that Twitter profiles of individuals who are geographically affiliated with the issue are likely to play an important role in the flow of communication.

A Study on the Effective Utilization of Social Media in Organizations : A Focus on Twitter (기업의 소셜미디어 활용방안에 대한 연구 : 트위터를 중심으로)

  • As the number of smart phone users increases, many organizations begin to adopt social media rapidly to diversify communication channels with customers. Specifically, twitter, which supports instant and two-way communications between users and between organizations and users, has been adopted by many organizations as an efficient way not only to identify new customers but also to retain existing customers. However, little attention has been given to the issue on how organizations can effectively use twitter to improve customer satisfaction. To explore the issue, this study proposes two major dimensions, customer participation and organization resource utilization, which should be considered in building a utilization strategy for twitter in organizations. We then develop four different combinations along with these dimensions-follow, mention, retweet, and review types. Based on case studies of 27 organizations that use twitter, we evaluate the degrees of customer participation, resource utilization, and customer satisfaction, and examine matching or mismatching of the adoption purpose of twitter and its actual utilization. The study results reveal that organizations in the matching group show higher customer satisfaction that those in the mismatching group. This study sheds new light on twitter research by developing a new conceptual framework and using a case study approach to explore the relationship between the utilization strategy of twitter and customer satisfaction.

  • This study investigated how social issues are interpreted and presented in Twitter in comparison to newspapers, considering Twitter functions as the media for information transmission and public opinion formation. this study used one of Twitter's media agenda, MBC strike, and analyzed how Twitter and newspaper deal with the issue of the MBC strike differently. The content analysis was performed to examine the differences. The categories for the content analysis include; message format, information sources, perspectives to be expressed, the frame of human interests, and the frame of cause-assigning. The results found out significant differences between Twitter and newspapers, which are related to essential differences between Twitter and newspaper as communication media.

Smart phones and SNS Twitter, combined with the TV and the participation and direct democracy, voters vote one instrument was realized. Should forward approval ratings, real-time Twitter subtitles on the TV screen in TV debate Twitter influence in the election will be greatly expanded.

Changes in public recognition of parabens on twitter and the research status of parabens related to toothpaste (트위터(twitter)에서의 파라벤(parabens) 관련 대중의 인식 변화와 치약내 파라벤에 대한 연구 현황)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in public recognition of parabens on Twitter and the research status of parabens related to toothpaste. Methods: Tweet information between 2010 and October 2016 was collected by an automatic web crawler and examined according to tweet frequency, key words (2012-October 2016), and issue tweet detection analyses to reveal changes in public recognition of parabens on Twitter. To investigate the research status of parabens related to toothpaste, queries such as "paraben," "paraben and toxicity," "paraben and (toothpastes or dentifrices)," and "paraben and (toothpastes or dentifrices) and toxicity" were used. Results: The number of tweets concerning parabens sharply increased when parabens in toothpaste emerged as a social issue (October 2014), and decreased from 2015 onward. However, toothpaste and its related terms were continuously included in the core key words extracted from tweets from 2015. They were not included in key words before 2014, indicating that the emergence of parabens in toothpaste as a social issue plays an important role in public recognition of parabens in toothpaste. The issue tweet analysis also confirmed the change in public recognition of parabens in toothpaste. Despite the expansion of public recognition of parabens in toothpaste, there are only seven research articles on the topic in PubMed. Conclusions: The general public clearly recognized parabens in toothpaste after emergence of parabens in toothpaste as a social issue. Nevertheless, the scientific information on parabens in toothpaste is very limited, suggesting that the efforts of dental scientists are required to expand scientific knowledge related to parabens in oral hygiene measures.

The Effect of Opinion Congruency with Twitter Influentials on Opinion Expression: The Interaction Effect of Influential Type (트위터 유력자와의 의견일치여부가 의견표명에 미치는 영향: 유력자 유형의 상호작용효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of twitter influenctials on users' willingness on express opinions. Based on the spiral of silence and corrective action hypothesis, the contradictory hypotheses were drawn. The online expeiment was conducted to verify which hypothesis is valid. Participant were assigned to the four experimenatal conditons: a famous influential's twit which agrees with the issue; a famous influential's twit which disagrees with the issue; an ordinary influential's twit to agree with the issue; an ordinary influential's twit to disagree with the issue. Results showed that opinion congruency with a twitter influential did not influence participants' willingness to express opinion online and offline, but the interaction effect with the type of influentials was found. Opinion dissonance with an ordinary tiwtterian increased willingness to express opinion. The findings suggest that twitter influentials, particulary an ordinary influentials with differnet opinions, can motivate users to express their own opinion.

Analysis of the Spread of Issues Related to COVID-19 Vaccine on Twitter: Focusing on Issue Salience (코로나19 백신 관련 트위터 상의 이슈 확산 양상 분석: 이슈 현저성을 중심으로)

  • This study conducted a network analysis to determine how COVID-19 vaccine-related issue spread on Twitter during the introduction stage of the COVID-19. Issue diffusion tendency is analyzed according to the time period: phase 1 (initiation of vaccine introduction: March 7 - April 3, 2021), phase 2 (stagnant period of vaccination: April 4 - April 22, 2021), and phase 3 (increase of vaccination: April 23 - May 5, 2021). NodeXL was used for data collection and analysis. Daily Twitter network data were collected by entering search terms highly related to the COVID-19 vaccine. This study found that side effects-related opinions were repeatedly formed throughout the analysis period. As the vaccination rate increased and death cases were reported on media, death-related issues also emerged on Twitter. On the other hand, vaccine safety did not receive much attention on Twitter. The results of this study highlight the role of social media as a channel of issue diffusion when a national disaster strikes. We emphasize the need for the government to monitor public opinions on social media and reflect them in crisis communication strategies.

  • This study focused on the difference of the volume of sanitory pad issue and The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the characteristics of SNS and the diffusion of issue in the process of crisis issue. SNS is categorized into communication diffusion, communication restriction,, diffusion, restriction base on the media interactivity and the user interactivity, In case of Twitter, media interactivity is low and user interactivity is low. In case of Youtube, media interactivity and user interactivity are all high. Crisiss issue is interactively diffused via Youtube compared to via Twitter. There was a negative public opinion in social media even if the government and the manufacturer said that there was no harm in the sanitary goods. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of social media environment in the diffusion of information. The government prepared for the use of SNS in crisis because there was a negative opinion on the government and the manufacturer via SNS.

Following Firms on Twitter: Determinants of Continuance and Word-of-Mouth Intentions (트위터를 통한 기업과 고객과의 소통: 지속적인 팔로윙과 구전 의도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대한 연구)

  • Many companies have recently become interested in using social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a new channel to communicate with their customers. For example, companies often offer "special deals" (e.g., coupons, discounts, free samples, etc.) to their customers who participate in promotions or events on social networking sites. Companies often make important announcements on their products or services on social networking sites. By doing so, customers are encouraged to continue to have relationships with companies on social networking sites and to recommend the companies' presence on social networking sites to other potential customers. Moreover, customers who keep close relationships with companies on social networking sites often provide the companies with valuable suggestions and feedback. For instance, Starbucks has more than 2 million followers on Twitter, and often receive suggestions and feedback for their product offerings and services from the followers on Twitter. Although companies realize potential benefits of using social networking sites as a channel to communicate with their customers, it appears that many companies have difficulty forging long-lasting relationships with customers on social networking sites. It is often reported that many customers who had followed companies on Twitter later stopped following them for various reasons. Therefore, it is an important issue to understand what motivates customers to continue to keep relationships with companies on social networking sites. Nonetheless, due attention has yet paid to this issue until recently. This study intends to contribute to our understanding on customers' intention to continue to follow companies on Twitter and to spread positive word-of-mouth about companies on Twitter. Specifically, we identify seven potential factors that customers perceive as important in evaluating their experience with companies on Twitter. The seven factors include similarity, receptivity, interactivity, ubiquitous connectivity, enjoyment, usefulness and transparency. We posit that the seven perception factors can affect the two types of satisfaction, emotional and cognitive, which can in turn influence on customers' intention to follow companies on Twitter and to spread positive word-of-mouth about companies on Twitter. Research hypotheses formulated in this study were tested with data collected from a questionnaire survey administered to customers who had been following companies on Twitter. The data was analyzed with the partial least square (PLS) approach to structural equation modeling. The results of data analysis based on 177 usable responses were generally supportive of our predictions for the effects of the seven factors identified and the two types of satisfaction. In particular, out results suggest that emotional satisfaction was strongly influenced by perceived similarity, perceived receptivity, perceived enjoyment, and perceived transparency. Cognitive satisfaction was significantly influenced by perceived similarity, perceived interactivity, perceived enjoyment, and perceived transparency. While cognitive satisfaction was found to have significant and positive effects on both continued following and word-of-mouth intentions, emotional satisfaction had a significant and positive effect only on word-of-mouth intention.

The Diffusion of Rumor Via Twitter : The Diffusion Trend and the User Interactivity in the Korea-U.S. FTA Case (트위터를 통한 루머의 확산 과정 연구: 한미 FTA 관련 루머의 자극성에 따른 의견 확산 추이와 이용자의 상호작용성을 중심으로)

  • This study explored how rumor is diffused via Twitter and how the characteristics of rumor affect the interactivity among users in the Korea-U.S. FTA case. A key word search located three issues as major ones related to the Korea-U.S. FTA: appendectomy myth, collapse of health insurance, and increases in medicine prices. The arousal of rumor has two dimensions: fact and expression. The fact arousal was the highest in the issue of 'appendectomy myth', and the expression arousal the highest in 'increases in medicine prices'. The rumor diffusion took the 'explosive wave' in the issue of appendectomy myth, the 'latent wave' in the issue of increase in medicine prices, and the 'repetitive wave' in the issue of collapse of health insurance. Correlation analyses revealed a high correlation between the arousal intensity of rumor and the user interactivity in the issue of collapse of health insurance. The study showed that Twitter took a role of diffusing negative messages about the Korea-U.S. FTA. Results implies that government officials and journalists pay attention to Twitter for sensing the public opinion when building policies and managing crises.
