  • In this paper, The bulging behavior of the solidified shell in continuously cast slabs have been numerically analyzed using three-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element method Three-dimensional model has been applied in order to investigate the effect of the narrow face shell on restraining the bulging deflection. Solidification analysis are carried out by two-dimensional finite difference method. In this way, strains occurring at the solidification front near the narrow face of the slab, as well as those occurring in the board face have been computed. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. In addition, the effect of the slab width and casting speed on the bulging are discussed.

  • An algorithm for modeling the filling of metal into a mold and solidification has been developed. This algorithm uses the implicit VOF method for a filling and a general implicit source-based method for solidification. The model for simultaneous filling and solidification is applied to the two-dimensional filling and solidification of a square cavity. The effects of the wall temperature and gate position on the solidification are examined. The mixed natural convection flow and residual flow resulting from the completion of a filling are included in this study to investigate the coupled effects of the filling and natural convection on solidification. Two different filling configurations (assisting flow and opposite flow due to the gate position) are analysed to study the effects of residual flow on solidification. The results clearly show the necessity to carry out a coupled filling and solidification analysis including the effect of natural convection.

  • A three dimensional model was developed to analyze the mold filling and solidification in the casting processes. The model uses the VOF method for the calculation of the free surface and the modified Equivalent Specific Heat method for the treatment of the latent heat evolution. The solution procedure is based on the SIMPLER algorithm. The complete model has been validated using the exact solutions for phase change heat transfer and the experimental results of broken water column. The three-dimensional model has been applied to the benchmark test and the results were compared to those from experiment, a two-dimensional analysis, and another three dimensional numerical model.

  • A computer program has been developed for analyzing the two-dimensional, unsteady conservation equations for transport phenomena in the molten region of twin-roll continuous casting in order to predict the turbulent velocity, temperature fields, and solidification process of the molten steel. The energy equation of the cooling roll is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations of molten steel in order to consider heat transfer through the cooling roll. The results show the velocity, temperature and solidification pattern in the molten region with roll temperature as a function of time. The results for velocity and temperature fields with solidification are compared with those without solidification, giving different thermofluid characteristics in the molten region. We also investigated the effects of revolutional speed of roll, superheat and nozzle geometry on the turbulent flow, temperature and solidification in the molten steel and temperature fields in the cooling roll.

  • Dimensional defects of castings are mainly due to the stresses and strains caused by a nonuniform temperature distribution and phase transformation during solidification and cooling, and by mechanical constraint between the mold and casting. It is, however, nearly impossible to trace movements of the casting and mold during solidification and cooling by experimental measurements for castings with complex shape. Two and three dimensional deformation analyses of the casting and the mold were performed using commercial finite element code, MARC. It was possible to calculate deformation and temperature distribution in the casting and mold simultaneously. Cooling curves of the casting obtained by calculation were close to that measured in the field since it was possible to treat latent heat evolution of the casting which could be divided into two parts, primary and eutectic parts. Mold bent inward just after pouring due to the temperature gradient across the mold thickness, and mold returned to its previous position with time. Plastic deformation occurred at the part of the casting where solidification was slow.

  • This study has been conducted to verify the possibility of adaptation of a latent storage type air-conditioning system, shifting the peak load of electronic power to a building. In this paper, an energy equation to evaluate performance of PEM(phase change material) has been suggested and solved, after discretization. As a result, it is confirmed that the results from the energy equation are correspond with those from present studies to analysis of one-dimensional solidification and to analysis of two-dimensional solidification.

  • The twin-roll type strip continuous casting process(or direct rolling process) of steel materials is characterized by two rotating water cooled rolls receiving a steady supply of molten metal which solidifies onto the rolls. A solidification analysis of molten metal considering phase transformation and thermofluid is performed using finite diffefence method with curvilinear coordinate to reduce computing time and molten region analysis with arbitrary shape. An enthalpy-specific heat method is used to determine the temperatures inthe roll and the steel. The temperature distribution of cooling roll is calculated using two dimensional finite element method, because of complex roll shape due to cooling hole in rolls and improvemnt accuracy of calculation result. The energy equaiton of cooling roll is solved simultanuously with the conservation equaiton of molten metal in order to consider heat transfer through the cooling roll. The calculated roll temperature is compared to experimental results and the heat transfer coefficient between cooling roll surface and rolling material(steel) is also determined from comparison of measured roll temperature and calculated temperature.

  • In this paper, a bulging condition which affect the quality of continuous casting steel was analyzed by using the numerical analytic method. First, solidification analyses were performed for each cooling zone by one-dimensional finite difference method. The bulging deformation of cast slab has been calculated with a two-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element model. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. From this study the effects of the process variables such as casting speed, cooling condition and roll pitch were examined. The results from these analyses would be able to apply to the design of continuous casting process.

  • A three dimensional numerical model was developed to analyze the mold filling and solidification processes straightforwardly in a casting processes. On the basis of the SIMPLER algorithm, the VOF method and the Equivalent Specific Heat method were adopted to deal with the free surface behavior and the latent heat evolution. The complete model has been validated using exact solutions and experimental results. The importance of three-dimensional effects has been highlighted by comparing the results from the three-dimensional analysis with those given by a two-dimensional analysis.
