This paper proposes phase current reconstruction techniques for two-phase two-leg and two-phase four-leg inverters using a single current sensor. In the proposed methods, one phase current is sampled simultaneously with a particular branch current by using only one current sensor, and then current reconstruction algorithms are applied to extract the information on two phase currents from the sensor output. The sampled current information is periodically updated at the peak and the valley of the triangular carrier waveform in each switching cycle of pulse-width modulation (PWM). The voltage vector spaces where the phase currents can be reconstructed are evaluated. Compared to the existing method using two individual current sensors in two phases, the proposed schemes can save implementation cost since it is possible to remove one current sensor. In addition, the proposed methods are free from gain discrepancy issues between two current sensors. Simulations and experiments show excellent current reconstruction performance of the proposed methods.
In this paper, a simple scheme compensating for the effect of dc-link ripple voltages on output voltage of two-leg and three-phase PWM inverters is proposed, where single-phase half-bridge PWM convertor and two-leg inverter are used. The voltage at neutral point of the dc-link is controlled so that the upper-half of do-link voltage is equal to the lower-half voltage in average concept. However, the effect of the do-link ripple voltage results in the inverter output voltage and current distortion. This effect can be eliminated by introducing a compensation voltage in switching time calculation. Also, the inverter dead time should be compensated for sinusoidal output waveform. The proposed scheme has been verified by experimental results which were obtained from the V/F constant operation of the induction motor fed by two-leg inverter.
In this paper, a compensation scheme for the effect of dc-link ripple voltages on output voltage of two-leg and three-phase PWM inverters is proposed, without which compensation scheme the three-phase output voltage and current are much distorted. The proposed scheme has been verified by experimental results.
Finite-control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is a promising control scheme for two-level voltage-source inverters (TL-VSIs). However, two main issues arise in the classical FCS-MPC method: an exponentially-increasing computational time and a low steady-state performance. To solve these two issues, a novel FCS-MPC method has been proposed for n-phase TL-VSIs in this paper. The basic idea of the proposed method is to carry out the FCS-MPC scheme of TL-VSIs for one leg by one leg, like a "pipeline". Based on this idea, the calculations are reduced from exponential time to linear time and its current waveforms are improved by applying more switching states per sampling period. The cases of three-phase and five-phase TL-VSIs were tested to verify the effectiveness of proposed method.

This paper aims to compare the performance of three phase induction motor drives using Five Leg Inverter (FLI) and Three Leg Inverter (TLI) configurations. An Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) method using a TLI is well established and incorporated for high performance speed drives in various industries. The FLI dual motor drive system on the other hand shows good workability in the independent control of two induction motor drives simultaneously. In this experiment, the IFOC method is utilized for both drive systems, and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) is used to generate pulses for both inverters. For the FLI, the Double Zero Sequence (DZS) Injection technique is used to generate the modulation signal. The complete experiment setup is done by using a DSpace 1103 controller board. The individual motor performances are analyzed using similar schemes, equipment setups and controller parameter values. The results show similar speed performance response capability between the single motor operation using a TLI system and the two motor operation using a FLI system based on the variable speed range either in forward or reverse operation. They also show similar load rejection abilities. However, the single motor with a TLI has a better power quality aspect such as ripple current and total harmonics distortion (THD).
The four-leg Voltage Source Converter(VSC) can use the DC link voltage effectively by the 3-D SVPWM method. Hence the DC battery voltage can be reduced by $15\%$ in comparison to that of the conventional line-interactive UPS system. In this paper a novel line interactive Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS) using the two four-leg VSCs is proposed. One VSC is in parallel with the ac link reactor of the power source side, and the other is in series with the load. The parallel four-leg voltage source inverter controls the three-phase line voltage independently in order to control the line reactor current indirectly. It eliminates the neutral line current and the active ripple power of the source side using the pqr theory so that unity power factor and the sinusoidal source current can be achieved even though both the source and the load voltages have zero sequence components. The series four-leg voltage source inverter compensates the line voltage and allows it to be balanced and harmonic-free. Both of the parallel and series four-leg voltage source inverters always act as independently controllable voltage sources, so that the three-phase output voltage shows a seamless transition to the backup mode. The feasibility of the proposed UPS system has been investigated and verified through computer simulations results.
In this paper, a novel offset-based single-state pulse width modulation (PWM) method for achieving zero common-mode voltage (CMV) and reducing switching losses in multilevel inverters is presented. The specific active switching state of the zero common-mode (ZCM) voltage that approximates the reference voltage can be deduced from the switching state sequence of the reduced CMV phase disposition PWM (CMV PD PWM) method. From the reference leg voltages for the zero common-mode voltage, an N-to-2-level transformation defines a virtual two-level inverter and the corresponding nominal leg voltage references. The commutation process of the reduced CMV PD PWM method in a multilevel inverter and its outputs can be simply followed in a nominal switching time diagram for the virtual inverter. The characteristics of the reduced CMV PD PWM and the single-state PWM for zero common-mode voltage are analyzed in detail in this paper. The theoretical analysis of the proposed PWM method is verified by experimental results.
In this paper a novel line interactive UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) using the two 4-leg VSCs and AC line reactor is proposed. The 4-leg Voltage Source Converter(VSC) can use the DC link voltage effectively by the 3-D SVPWM method. Hence the DC battery voltage can be reduced by $15\%$ in comparison to that of the conventional line-interactive UPS system. One VSC is in parallel with the AC line reactor of the power source side, and the other is in series with the load. The parallel 4-leg voltage source inverter controls three-phase line voltage independently in order to control the line reactor current indirectly. It eliminates the neutral line current and the active ripple power of the source side using the pqr theory so that unity power factor and the sinusoidal source current can be achieved even though both the source and the load voltages have zero sequence components. The series 4-leg voltage source inverter compensates the line voltage and allows the load voltage to be balanced and harmonic-free. Both of parallel and series 4-leg voltage source inverters always act as independently controllable voltage sources, so that three-phase output voltage shows a seamless transition to the backup mode. The feasibility of the proposed UPS system has been investigated and verified through computer simulation results.
This paper considers a carrier based signal injection method for use in the three shunt sensing inverter (TSSI) for sensorless motor control. It also analyzes the loss according to the injection axis of the voltage signal. To remove both the phase current and rotor position sensors, a sensorless method and a phase current reconstruction method can be simultaneously considered. However, an interaction between the two methods can be incurred when both methods inject voltage signals simultaneously. In this paper, a signal injection based sensorless method with the 120° OFF Discontinuous PWM (DPWM) is implemented in a TSSI to avoid this interaction problem. Since one leg does not have a switching event for one sampling period in the 120° OFF DPWM, the switching loss is altered according to the injection axis. The switching loss in the d-axis injection case can be up to 32% larger than that in the q-axis injection case. Other losses according to the injection axis are also analyzed.
