  • This study reports the interfacial bond strength between Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) and Normal Strength Concrete (NSC). While previous studies have focused on the interfacial strength between NSC substrate and UHPC overlay, this study use precast UHPC for enhanced constructability and replacement of formwork. The factors affecting the interface strength are comprehensively reviewed. It can be classified into: interface shape, degree of hardening and moisture condition of UHPC before combining with NSC, and curing condition of composite materials. Conducted experiments verify the effects of each factor on the interface strength and, accordingly show different failure modes. In particular, a new failure mode of the failure of a part of UHPC was firstly found in the case of sample with rough interface between UHPC and NSC. The other factors of the degree of hardening and the moisture and curing conditions of UHPC were discussed. This research will provide a valuable foundation to utilize the UHPC as a composite material.

  • While ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is commonly reinforced with micro straight steel fibers in existing applications, studies have indicated that the use of deformed steel macro-fibers leads to enhanced ductility and post-peak responses for UHPC structural elements, which is of particular importance for earthquake-resistant structures. However, there are potential concerns regarding the use of UHPC reinforced with macro-fibers due to the issues of workability and fiber distribution. The objective of this study was to address these issues by extensively investigating the restricted and non-restricted deformability, filling ability, horizontal and vertical velocities, and passing ability of UHPC containing macro hooked-end steel fibers. A new approach is suggested to examine the homogeneity of fiber distribution in UHPC. The influences of ultra-fine fillers and steel macro-fibers on the workability of fresh UHPC and the mechanics of hardened UHPC were examined. It was found that although increasing the ratio of quartz powder to cement led to an improvement in the workability and tensile strain hardening behavior of UHPC, it reduced the fiber distribution homogeneity. The addition of 1% volume fraction of macro-fibers in UHPC improved workability, but reduced its compressive strength, which is contrary to the effect of micro-fiber inclusion in UHPC.

  • Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is recognized as a promising material in future civil engineering projects due to its outstanding mechanical and durability properties. However, the lack of local UHPC materials and official standards, especially for prestressed UHPC structures, has limited the application of UHPC. In this research, a large-scale prestressed bridge girder composed of nonproprietary UHPC is produced and investigated. This work has two objectives to develop the mixing procedure required to create UHPC in large batches and to study the flexural behavior of the prestressed girder. The results demonstrate that a sizeable batch of UHPC can be produced by using a conventional concrete mixing system at any precast factory. In addition, incorporating local aggregates and using conventional mixing systems enables regional widespread use. The flexural behavior of a girder made by this UHPC is investigated including flexural strength, cracking pattern and development, load-deflection curve, and strain and neutral axis behaviors through a comprehensive bending test. The experimental data is similar to the theoretical results from analytical methods based on several standards and recommendations of UHPC design.

  • Ultra High Performance Concrete(UHPC) has compressive strength higher than 180 MPa. The use of steel fibers in the dense UHPC matrix increases tensile strength, ductility and bond strength between UHPC and rebars. However, to apply the advance material behavior of UHPC to the design of a structure, we need design formulas. The crack formula is one of them. This paper investigated experimentally the bond behavior of a rebar and K-UHPC, the UHPC developed by Korea Institute of Construction Technology, and, modified CEB-FIP crack formula based on the test. In addition, this paper tested the crack behavior of K-UHPC reinforced with rebars to verify the modified crack formula. The result showed that the modified formula is reasonable to predict the width of cracks in the reinforced K-UHPC structures.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) can be used in the UHPC-steel composite structures especially for bridge structures to achieve high stiffness and high fatigue resistance with low self-weight. The structural performances of UHPC-steel composite slabs subjected to hogging moment have a significant influence on the global stiffness and durability of UHPC-steel composite structures. In order to study the structural behaviors of non-steam-cured UHPC-steel composite slabs subjected to negative moment, five composite slabs combined the thin UHPC layers to steel plates via shear stud connecters with the diameter of 16mm were fabricated and tested under negative moment. The test program aimed to investigate the effect of stud spacing and longitudinal reinforcement ratios on the failure mode, load-deflection behaviors, cracking patterns, bond-slips, and carrying capacities of composite slabs subjected to negative moment. In addition, direct tensile tests for the dog-bone UHPC specimens with longitudinal reinforcement bars were carried out to study the effect of reinforcement bars on the tensile strength of UHPC in the thin structure members. Based on the experimental results, analytical models were also developed to predict the cracking load and ultimate load of UHPC-steel composite slabs subjected to negative moment.

  • In this paper, when the composite beam is made with UHPC deck and steel girder, the steel girder takes the form of the inverted-T shape without top flange because of high strength and stiffness of UHPC deck. There is no evaluation by experiment and analysis about the shear connector behavior on the web of steel girder and flexural behavior of inverted-T shape composite beam. By this reason, this study compares between experiment and analysis by using tension softening model of UHPC on the basis of flexural test results of 16 members considering compressive strength of UHPC, spacing of stud and thickness of deck as variables. The results of tensile strength of UHPC by inverse analysis were 6.57 MPa(in case of 120 MPa) and 9.57 MPa(in case of 150 MPa). In case of the test members with small stud spacing, the results of analysis and test were close clearly, and the test members with thick deck and low UHPC compressive strength also similar, but effects were small. As it compared between analysis and experiment totally, the results of analysis and experiment agree well. So the tension softening model of UHPC is reasonably reflected on the real behavior of composite beam of UHPC.

  • To design structures with Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), it is necessary to estimate the mechanical properties first of all. The most attractive characteristics of UHPC are the considerable tensile strength and behavior. Therefore the most important thing in order to properly design UHPC structures is to establish the constitutive model to represent the tensile behavior of UHPC. In this study, it was tried to find out the tensile behavior of UHPC by experiments and analyses. Through comparisons with the French SETRA/AFGC recommendations and the Japanese recommendations for the Ultra High-Strength Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Structures, a reasonable model which could represent the tensile stress-strain relationship in the structural design was proposed

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has aroused interest around the world owing to superior mechanical and durability properties over conventional concrete. However, the application of UHPC in practice poses difficulties due to its inherent brittleness. UHPC filled in steel tube columns (UHPC-FSTCs) are capable of restricting the brittle failure of non-reinforced UHPC columns and forming a high performance member with enhancement of strength and ductility. Currently, research on UHPC-FSTCs remains very limited and there is relatively little information about the mechanical behavior of these columns. Therefore, this study presents a review of past experimental studies to have a deeper insight into the compressive behavior of UHPC-FSTCs under axial loading on entire section and on concrete core. Based on the test results obtained from Schneider (2006) and Xiong (2012), an analysis was conducted to investigate the influence of the confinement index (${\xi}$) and diameter to steel tube thickness ratio (D/t) on the strength and the ductility in short circular UHPC-FSTCs. Furthermore, the appropriateness of current design codes including EC4, AISC, AIJ and previous analytical models for estimating the ultimate loads of composite columns was also examined by the comparison between the predictions and the test results. Finally, simplified formulae for predicting the ultimate loads in two types of loading pattern were proposed and verified.

  • An active study on UHPC, which has been recently used in high-rise building and bridges, is in progress. However, research on bonding shear strength of UHPC is required to be studied due to the lack of information. In this study, experimental research progress for bonding shear strength (shear strength of adhesive surface) evaluation of UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) is proceeded. First, specimens that surface treatment methods of concrete bonded section and retardation time of placement are considered are produced. Second, Direct Shear test is applied on concrete bonded section of UHPC. As a result of this study, the highest bonding shear strength specimen in which compared to the non-retardation time specimen is compaction turbulence treatment. From later study, it is judged that strength of UHPC in accordance with direction of steel fiber when steel fiber of UHPC is mixed.
