CHOOSER OPTIONS ON VARIOUS UNDERLYING OPTIONS

  • We consider chooser options written on various underlying assets other than vanilla call and put options. Specifically, we deal with (i) the chooser option written on the power call and put options, and (ii) the chooser option written on the exchange options. We provide explicit formulas for the prices of these chooser options whose underlying assets are either power options or exchange options, rather than the vanilla call and put options.

  • A floating-strike lookback call option gives the holder the right to buy at the lowest price of the underlying asset. Similarly, a floating-strike lookback put option gives the holder the right to sell at the highest price. This paper will propose an outside floating-strike lookback call (or put) option that gives the holder the right to buy (or sell) one underlying asset at some percentage of the lowest (or highest) price of the other underlying asset. In addition, this paper will derive explicit pricing formulas for these outside floating-strike lookback options. Sections 3 and 4 assume that the underlying assets pay no dividends. In contrast, Section 5 will derive explicit pricing formulas for these options when their underlying assets pay dividends continuously at a rate proportional to their prices. Some numerical examples will be discussed.

  • A floating-strike lookback call (or put) option gives the holder the right to buy (or sell) at some percentage of the lowest (or highest) price of the underlying asset. This paper will propose an outside lookback call (or put) option that gives the holder the right to buy (or sell) one underlying asset at its guaranteed floating-strike price that is some percentage times the smaller (or the greater) of a specific guaranteed amount and the lowest (or highest) price of the other underlying asset. In addition, this paper derives explicit pricing formulas for these outside lookback options. Section 3 and Section 4 assume that the underlying assets pay no dividends. In contrast, Section 5 derives explicit pricing formulas for these options when their underlying assets pay dividends continuously at a rate proportional to their prices. Some numerical examples are also discussed.

A Study on a Decrease in Trading Values in KOSPI 200 Financial Derivatives Market (KOSPI 200 파생상품시장의 거래대금 변동에 관한 연구)

  • This paper investigates factors underlying a decrease in trading values in KOSPI 200 futures/options market on the basis of the current state of the markets. Among the factors that could affect trading values in KOSPI 200 derivatives market, we focus on the market activity of underlying assets as it has an impact on the trading of financial derivatives. Trading value and volatility are designated as market activity and the empirical results confirm that the market activity of the underlying assets is significant in explaining the decrease in trading values in KOSPI 200 futures/options market. To figure out fundamental reasons of the decrease in trading values in this market, we examine mitigation of home bias and decrease in leverage incentives as they are presumed to have influence on KOSPI 200 index market. As the global and local financial environment is time-varying, the degree of home bias and the leverage demand also changes. It implies that institutional change and/or policy effort to promote the trading of KOSPI 200 financial derivatives should be made taking into account the fact that considerable portion of the change in trading values in financial derivatives market depends on the state of the market.

EFFICIENT AND ACCURATE FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD FOR THE FOUR UNDERLYING ASSET ELS

  • In this study, we consider an efficient and accurate finite difference method for the four underlying asset equity-linked securities (ELS). The numerical method is based on the operator splitting method with non-uniform grids for the underlying assets. Even though the numerical scheme is implicit, we solve the system of discrete equations in explicit manner using the Thomas algorithm for the tri-diagonal matrix resulting from the system of discrete equations. Therefore, we can use a relatively large time step and the computation of the ELS option pricing is fast. We perform characteristic computational test. The numerical test confirm the usefulness of the proposed method for pricing the four underlying asset equity-linked securities.

  • Among a variety of asset dynamics models in order to explain the common properties of financial underlying assets, parametric models are meaningful when their parameters are set reliably. There are two main methods from which we can obtain them. They are to use time-series data of an underlying price or the market option prices of the underlying at one time. Based on the Girsanov theorem, in the pure diffusion models, the parameters calibrated from the option prices should be partially equivalent to those from time-series underling prices. We call this phenomenon model consistency. In this paper, we verify that the two-state regime switching Black-Scholes model is superior in the sense of model consistency, comparing with two popular conventional models, the Black-Scholes model and Heston model.

PRICING FLOATING-STRIKE LOOKBACK OPTIONS WITH FLEXIBLE MONITORING PERIODS

  • We present the user-friendly graphical user interface design and implementation of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) for computing option price of the four-underlying asset step-down equity linked securities (ELS) using the Android platform. The ELS has been one of the most important and influential financial products in South Korea. Most ELS products are based on one-, two-, and three-underlying assets. However, currently there is a demand for higher coupon payment from ELS products because of the increased interest rate in financial market. In order to allow the investors to have higher coupon payment, it is necessary to design a multi-asset ELS such as four-asset step-down ELS. We conduct the computational experiments to demonstrate the performance of the Android platform for pricing four-asset step-down ELS. Furthermore, we perform a comparison test with a three-asset step-down ELS.

Evaluation of interest rate-linked DLSs

  • Derivative-linked securities (DLS) is a type of derivatives that offer an agreed return when the underlying asset price moves within a specified range by the maturity date. The underlying assets of DLS are diverse such as interest rates, exchange rates, crude oil, or gold. A German 10-year bond rate-linked DLS and a USD-GBP CMS rate-linked DLS have recently become a social issue in Korea due to a huge loss to investors. In this regard, this paper accounts for the payoff structure of these products and evaluates their prices and fair coupon rates as well as risk measures such as Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Tail-Value-at-Risk (TVaR). We would like to examine how risky these products were and whether or not their coupon rates were appropriate. We use Hull-White Model as the stochastic model for the underlying assets and Monte Carlo (MC) methods to obtain numerical results. The no-arbitrage prices of the German 10-year bond rate-linked DLS and the USD-GBP CMS rate-linked DLS at the center of the social issue turned out to be 0.9662% and 0.9355% of the original investment, respectively. Considering that Korea government bond rate for 2018 is about 2%, these values are quite low. The fair coupon rates that make the prices of DLS equal to the original investment are computed as 4.76% for the German 10-year bond rate-linked DLS and 7% for the USD-GBP CMS rate-linked DLS. Their actual coupon rates were 1.4% and 3.5%. The 95% VaR and TVaR of the loss for German 10-year bond rate-linked DLS are 37.30% and 64.45%, and those of the loss for USD-GBP CMS rate-linked DLS are 73.98% and 87.43% of the initial investment. Summing up the numerical results obtained, we could see that the DLS products of our interest were indeed quite unfavorable to individual investors.

  • This research has been focused upon and analyzing Medison, once a leading New Technology-Based Firm (NTBF) in Korea with exceptionally advanced technology in 3D ultrasound diagnostic imaging devices (UDIDs) (armored with 23 subsidiaries at its peak expansion), from the perspective if Dynamic Firm Capability(DFC). The underlying hypothesis is that the various problems from its pointless pursuit of the business styles or precedents of the existing large firms might be traced to its specific characteristics as an NTBF, which should have more preferably been based upon the distinctive competences such as differentiated technologies, institutional linkages, organizational routines, and complementary assets, etc. In conclusion, for the NTBFs with different DFC domains from those of the large firms, the optimal external linkages and comprehensive integration efforts (Process) under their specific organizational characteristics and constraints (Path) are highly recommended for the continuous accumulation of their core capabilities based upon the technological assets (Position).
