  • A hybrid rocket engine capable of thrust throttling and underwater-working was developed for the underwater high-speed vehicle propulsion system. The hybrid rocket engine was designed and made by two types of ground test motor and underwater working motors. An engine performance was verified by the ground tests with the ground test motor and in the case of underwater motors the ground tests and underwater tests were performed. For the underwater operation a two-stage ignition system was adopted and a rupture disc was installed at the end of nozzle for a water-tight just before an ignition. Successful ignition and propulsion were confirmed in the underwater test with the final selected double rupture disc.

  • In this paper, Underwater propulsion test of SWASH(Small Waterplane Area Single Hull) type underwater vehicle with hybrid rocket system is performed. Watertight structure is applied to prevent a combustion chamber from water, and the control logic is constructed by setting the watertight ignition sequence. As a results, It is confirmed that the ignition is stable in water, and the propulsion system works well along the configured control sequence.

  • The development of an underwater rocket propulsion system was described in this paper. Throttle able liquid propellant and hybrid rocket propulsion systems were selected for underwater propulsion. A subscale liquid rocket combustion chamber and it's portable stand were developed and their applicability was examined. 1.5-ton.f and 1.8-ton.f hybrid rockets were developed for underwater applications. The test results indicated that the 18-ton.f hybrid rocket fully complies to the performance and underwater cruise stability requirements; thus, its development was concluded to be successfully complete.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel propulsion method for a Biomimetic underwater robot, which is a bio-inspired approach. The proposed propulsion method mimics the pectoral fins of a real fish. Pectoral fins of real fish are able to propel and change direction. We designed the propulsion mechanism of 1 D.O.F. that has two functions (propel and change direction). We named this propulsion system 'Flipper'. The proposed propulsion method can control forward, pitch and yaw motion using the Flipper. We made an experimental underwater robot system and verified the proposed propulsion method. We measured its maximum speed and turning motion using an experimental underwater robot system. We also analyzed the thrust force from the maximum speed, using the thrust equation. Experimental results showed that our propulsion method enabled the thrust system of the biomimetic robot.

  • A fundamental experimental study for an alternative proposal to super-speed craft propulsion system called underwater ram-jet propulsion by high pressure air ejection as driving force was investigated. For basic study of the effects of ram-jet propulsion performance, a simple underwater ram-jet flow field was established and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method was adopted to analyse the jet-induced flow appearing at ram intake, mixing chamber and nozzle. Some flow dynamics relating to the high-speed ram-jet effect were discussed for the basic understanding of the its propulsion principle.

  • $NaBH_4$ was added to improve the water reactivity of aluminum powder as a solid propellant for underwater propulsion. Aluminum powders showed different combustion characteristics depending on the amount of $NaBH_4$ added. When $NaBH_4$ was added, it was burned by reaction with water even at a temperature much lower than the boiling point. In this study, it was confirmed that $NaBH_4$ is an effective additive to accelerate the vapor reaction with Al powder.

  • High temperature oxygen and water vapor was generated from catalytic decomposition of rocket grade highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide, and monopropellant thruster system was developed and applied into space propulsion system. In this research, background research and conceptual design of underwater propulsion system using catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was progressed. Two types of system was designed with different steam injection methods. Propulsion system that has ring-type steam injector was manufactured and performance estimation of system was performed with different nozzle exit area. Performance evaluation with central steam injection type jet engine will be progressed in the future.

  • This paper presents the design and the analysis of a "fish-like underwater robot". In order to develop swimming robot like a real fish, extensive hydrodynamic analysis were made followed by the study of biology of the fishes especially its maneuverability and propel styles. Swimming mode is achieved by mimicking fish-swimming of carangiform. This is the swimming mode of the fast motion using its tail and peduncle for propulsion. In order to generate configurations of vortices that gives efficient propulsion yawing and surging with a caudal fin has applied and in order to submerge and maintain the body balance pitching and heaving motion with a pair of pectoral fin is used. We have derived the equation of motion of PoTuna by two methods. In first method, we use the equation of motion of underwater vehicle with the potential flow theory for the power of propulsion. In second method, we apply the method of the equation of motion of UVM(Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator). Then, we compare these results.

  • Many countries are paying efforts to the research and development of water-breathing ramjet propulsion for submersible vehicle with the super-cavitation which makes traveling at high speed in underwater possible. In this study, a conceptual design of an underwater vehicle with water-breathing ramjet was carried out. Mission profiles and operating conditions are determined by examining the operation environment. Drag is estimated based on the theories of super-cavitation and fluid mechanics. The sizing and performance analysis of the components were performed using thrust required, thrust and specific impulse of designed engine were verified.
