  • The ability to provide quality power has become a significant issue in power systems. The main causes of poor power quality are harmonic currents, poor power factor, supply-voltage variations, etc. A technique of achieving both active current distortion compensation, power factor correction and also mitigating the supply-voltage variation (sag or swell) at the load side is presented in this paper. The operation and rating issues of the proposed Single-phase Unified Power Quality Conditioner are also highlighted. To reduce the total cost while simultaneously increasing the performance, the system is fully digitally controlled using the fixed-point TMS320F240 digital signal processor. The performances of the UPQC, which is composed by shunt and series PWM controlled-converters, have been verified on a laboratory prototype.

  • This paper proposes a novel UPQC(unified power quality conditioner) based on H-bridge modules, isolated through single-phase multi-winding transformers. The dynamic performance of proposed system was analyzed by simulation with EMTDC/PSCAD, assuming that the UPQC is connected with the 22.9kV distribution line. The proposed system can be directly connected to the transmission line without series injection transformers. It has flexibility in expanding the operation voltage by increasing the number of H-bridge modules and can compensate reactive power, harmonics, voltage sag and swell, voltage unbalance. The control strategy for the proposing UPQC was derived using the instantaneous power method. • This paper proposes a single-phase unified power quality conditioner (S-UPQC) for maintaining power quality issues in a microgrid. The S-UPQC can compensate the voltage and current harmonics, voltage sag, and swell as a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), regardless of variations in the grid frequency. Odd harmonics are treated as even-order harmonics in a rotating frame to implement the harmonic compensators with only one repetitive controller (RC) without any harmonic extractor. The dynamic performance is improved and the delay time is reduced in the RC. The S-UPQC control scheme is designed to maintain accurate and stable operation under deviations of the grid frequency by using the Lagrange interpolation-based finite-impulse-response (LIFIR) filter approximation method. The proposed control schemes were validated through a simulation and experiment.

  • Recently, the increasing application of electronic equipments and information devices has heightened the interest in power qualify. The term power quality is applied to a wide range of electromagnetic phenomena on the power system and is also concentrated by all areas such as utilities, their customers and suppliers of load equipments. In engineering terms, power Qualify is expressed by voltage qualify because the power supply system can only control the quality of the voltage. Therefore, the standards in power quality area are devoted to keep the supply voltage within allowable limits. This paper deals with single-phase unified power quality conditioner (UPQC), which ai s at the integration of series-active and shunt-active filter. The series filter il used to compensate for the voltage distortions and the shunt filter is used to provide reactive power and counteract the harmonic current injected by the load. Also, the voltage of the DC link capacitor is controlled to a desired value by the shunt active filter. The validity of the proposed UPQC is demonstrated using both the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation and the experimental device with DSP (TMS320C32).

  • This paper discusses a simple control approach for a Unified Power Conditioner (UPC) system to achieve power quality compensation at the point of common coupling in distribution systems. The proposed Instantaneous Power Estimation Algorithm (IPEA) for shunt and series active power filters uses a simple mathematical concept that reduces the complexity in the design of the controller. The performance of a UPC is verified with a system subjected to voltage distortions, sags/swells and unbalanced loads using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation study shows that a UPC with the proposed control algorithm can effectively compensate for voltage and current harmonics, unbalance and reactive power. The control algorithm is experimentally implemented using dSPACE DS1104 and its effectiveness has been verified.
