  • This study was carried out to investigate the soil water characteristic curve and prediction of void ratio with net stress and matric suction using the linear elastic and volumetric deformation analysis method on unsaturated silty. The unsaturated soil tests were conducted using a modified oedometer cell and specimens were prepared at water content 2 times of liquid limit and required void ratio. The axis translation technique was used to create the desired matric suctions in the samples. It is shown that soil water characteristic curve and volumetric water content were affected significantly by preconsolidation pressure. As a matric suction increases, the reduction ratio of void ratio was shown to considerably small. Also, the predicted and measured void ratio for unsaturated soils using the linear elastic and volumetric deformation analysis showed good agreement as net stress and matric suction increases.

  • This study investigates the feasibility of adopting the results of the UC (unconfined compression) test to assess the total cohesion of the unsaturated soil. A series of laboratory tests were conducted on samples of unsaturated lateritic soils of northern Taiwan. Specifically, the unconfined compression test was combined with the pressure plate test to obtain the unconfined compression strength and its matric suction of the samples. Soil samples were first compacted at designated water content and then subjected to the wetting process for saturation and the subsequent drying process to its target suction using the apparatus developed by the authors. The correlations among the matric suction, the unconfined compression strength and the total cohesion were studied. As a result, a simplified method to estimate the total cohesion using the unconfined compressive strength is suggested. The calculated results compare reasonably with the unsaturated triaxial test results. Current results show good performance; however, further study is warranted.

  • To understand the gaseous behaviour of volatile organic compounds in the unsaturated zone, their volatilization coefficient k$_{Lg}$ is evaluated. An experiment is conducted to examine the dependence of k$_{Lg}$ on the concentration of the dissolution, presence of unsaturated zone and depth of the unsaturated zone. The results show that the volatilization coefficient is not dependent on the concentration under the constant temperature and pressure. It is also find that k$_{Lg}$ depends on the presence of the unsaturated zone rather than its depth.depth.

  • In this paper, shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated soil were compared using triaxial compression tests(CD) and modified direct shear tests and thus feasibility of the newly modified direct shear testing apparatus was confirmed. The shear strength tests of unsaturated state with a soil sample, obtained from a slope where debris flow occurred at Yangpyeong in Kyeunggi province during 2010, were performed. Both tests showed a linear relationship of matric suction with the shear strength under low level of matric suction. The apparent cohesion of the unsaturated soil was also increased linearly with increase of matric suction. As results of comparing two different testing apparatus, estimated values of shear strength parameters of unsaturated soil($c^{\prime}$, ${\phi}^b$) were slightly larger in the modified direct shear tests due to constraint effect of shear box.

  • Slope stability is affected by duration of precipitation, probable rainfall intensity, unsaturated soil property, and soil strength. The recent analyses of slope stability tend to include unsaturated analysis based on infiltration properties of soil, while researches of unsaturated soil slope tend to include the analysis of deformation and stress distribution of soil over time. However, infiltration property of unsaturated soil slope depends not only on intensity or duration of precipitation, but also on relief and surface condition, which is not considered in status quo. This research uses hydrologic model parameters of soil in order to consider effects of inclination on filtration, and carries out analysis of unsaturated soil slope to confirm the effects according to slope inclination and surface condition. In conclusion, using slope stability analysis, the need to consider infiltration rate according to inclination and surface condition was confirmed even under the same precipitation conditions.

  • The volume changes associated with moisture or suction variation in expansive soils are of geotechnical and geoenvironmental design concern. These changes can impact the performance of infrastructure projects and lightweight structures. Assessment of unsaturated function for these materials leads to better interpretation and understanding, as well as providing accurate and economic design. In this study, expansive soils from different regions of Saudi Arabia were studied for their basic properties including gradation, plasticity and shrinkage, swelling, and consolidation characteristics. The unsaturated soil functions of saturated water content, air-entry values, and residual states were determined by conducting the tests for the entire soil water characteristic curves (SWCC) using different techniques. An attempt has been made to provide a prediction model for unsaturated properties based on the basic properties of these soils. Once the profile of SWCC has been predicted the time and cost for many tests can be saved. These predictions can be utilized in practice for the application of unsaturated soil mechanics on geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects.

  • It has been recognized that unsaturated soil behavior plays an importantrole in geomechanics. In the last decade several constitutive models have been proposed and used in the analysis. Many of them, however, are constructed in the frame work of rate independent model such as elasto-plastic one. Although rate dependency is an important characteristics of soil for both saturated and unsaturated soils, very few models have been developed taking account of rate dependency. In the present paper, we have developed an elasto-viscoplastic model considering an effect of suction based on the overstress-type viscoplasticity with soil structure degradation. In the model, we have adopted an averaged pore pressure composed of pore water pressure and air pressure to determine the effective stress.

  • Laboratory scale experiments on in-situ ozonation were carried out to delineate the effects of liquid phases, such as soil water and nonaqeous phase liquid (NAPL) on the transport of gaseous ozone in unsaturated soil. Soil water enhanced the transport of ozone due to water film effect, which prevent direct reaction between soil particles and gaseous ozone, and increased water content reduced the breakthrough time of ozone because of increased average linear velocity of ozone and decreased air-water interface area. Diesel fuel as NAPL also played a similar role with water film, so the breakthrough time of ozone in diesel-contaminated soil was significantly reduced compared with uncontaminated soil. However, ozone breakthrough time was retarded with increased diesel concentration, because of high reactivity of diesel fuel with ozone. In multiphase liquid system of unsaturated soil, the ozone transport was mainly Influenced by nonwetting fluid, diesel fuel in this study.

  • The aim of the work described in this paper was to confirm the application of the equation of the soil-water characteristic curves on an unsaturated soil. A series of suction test for unsaturated soils was conducted on the selected 4 kinds of soil using modified pressure extractor apparatus. And it was carried out to analyse The experimental parameters which can be describe the soil-water characteristics, were determined by using the data obtained from the experiment. From the results, it was found that The matric suction varied according to the grain size distribution, amount of fine grain particles and void ratio. Also it was found that the residual degree of saturation was decreased with in crease of the void ratio, but the pore size distribution index and air entry value were increased with in crease of the void ratio. And The application of the soil-water characteristic curve equation was confirmed for the various conditions and the various state by the comparison between the measured degree of saturation and the predicted degree of saturation.

  • Seepage analysis through unsaturated zone based on the theory of unsaturated flow is commonly performed to evaluate dam safety. However, the concepts of unsaturated soil behavior have not been transferred into the hands of practicing geotechnical engineers since the problems involving unsaturated soils often have the appearances of being extremely complex. The behavior of dam such as seepage rate and the pore water pressure distribution is different according to the unsaturated hydraulic properties, but nevertheless simply assumed properties have been used due to insufficient data from domestic soils. In this paper, the effect of unsaturated hydraulic properties on the behavior of dam was studied through a series of numerical analyses, and then the results were discussed. It is observed that water table moves at a (aster rate, as the values of unsaturated soil parameter a and n increase. The value of m showed opposite trend. The sensitivity calculated using the approximation form showed maximum values near the water table. And the value of n that is related to the slope of soil water characteristic curve gives greatest influence on the change of sensitivity with time.
