An Explorative Study on the Social Metadata in Academic Libraries (소셜 메타데이터 활용에 관한 탐색적 연구 - 국내 대학도서관 웹 사이트 분석을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper attempts to explore the use of social metadata in academic libraries. A total of 173 academic libraries were examined and analyzed. Various social metadata were reviewed, involved with users' participation and contribution. Error-reports, tagging, recommendations, ratings, reviews, comments, sharing, and community were identified that support selection, sharing and collaboration through social engagement. Suggestions drawn from the findings are offered to utilize social metadata in order to enhance users' contribution and interaction. It is hoped that this exploratory study will provide insight into the use of social metadata in academic libraries.

  • Electronic record types are becoming diverse, and "composite electronic records," which are made up of various types of electronic records associated with functionality or user interaction that does not exist in current electronic document formats, are increasing. To ensure a continuous access to composite electronic records, metadata construction is a prerequisite for electronic records archiving. In this paper, we propose a metadata that can support archiving of composite electronic records associated with interactive functionality. The common elements were derived from an analysis of both domestic and international file format registry projects, and metadata elements related to functional requirements were identified from the analysis of the records on nursing education e-learning contents. We proposed the metadata elements for archiving composite electronic records, which consist of 25 high-level elements and 138 subelements.

Developing Digital Archives from the Records of Westerners who visited Korea during the Enlightenment Period of Chosun (개화기 방한 서양인 기록물의 디지털 아카이브 구축에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to create a digital archive for local cultural contents compiled from the records of westerners who visited Korea during the Enlightenment Period of Chosun. The compiled information were gathered from 11 records, and 10 main subjects and 120 sub-subjects were derived through the subject classification scheme. Item analysis was conducted through 37 metadata, and input data types were classified and databased in Excel. Finally, a model of the digital archive system was simulated, and a webpage consisting of five menus was presented. Suggestions for future research were extensive aggregation of new data for archive expansion, active connections between archive systems, standardization of systems, and improved system design for compatibility and user-friendliness.

Improvement Strategies for the Standard Records Management System of Korea (표준기록관리시스템의 개선전략 연구)

  • The current study aims to propose strategies for the improvement of the Standard Records Management System of Korea. Here, benefits from the system and reasons of underusage were derived based on the results taken from the analysis of interviews and answers to open-ended questions in the system usage survey. Issues related to the nine main functions of the system were also reviewed in the process. With this, the improvement strategies related to the aforementioned issues are categorized as (1) simplification of functionalities, (2) quality assurance of records and metadata, (3) strengthening user assistance and communication, and (4) trust building between the National Archives of Korea and records centers of public institutions.

Keyword Search and Ranking Methods on Semantic Web Documents (시맨틱 웹 문서에 대한 키워드 검색 및 랭킹 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose keyword search and ranking methods for OWL documents that describe metadata and ontology on the Semantic Web. The proposed keyword search method defines a unit of keyword search result as an information resource and expands a scope of query keyword to names of class and property or literal data. And we reflected derived information by inference in the keyword search by considering the elements of OWL documents such as hierarchical relationship of classes or properties and equal relationship of classes. In addition, our method can search a large number of information resources that are relevant to query keywords because of information resources indirectly associated with query keywords through semantic relationship. Our ranking method can improve user's search satisfaction because of involving a variety of factors in the ranking by considering the characteristics of OWL. The proposed methods can be used to retrieve digital contents, such as broadcast programs.
