Multi-stage deploying beams are useful for transporting parts or products handling in production lines. However, such multi-stage beams are often exposed to unwanted vibration due to the presence of their flexibility and time-varying properties. This paper is concerned with dynamic modeling and analysis of 2-stage axially deploying beams under gravity by using the finite element method. A variable domain finite element method is employed to develop the dynamic model. A rigorous method to account for engagement of two-stage beams during the deploying procedure is introduced by breaking the entire domain into three variable domains. Several deploying strategies are tested to analyze the residual vibrations. Several examples are illustrated to investigate the self-induced damping and the effects of deploying strategy on the vibrations.

In this paper, review of developed MLS-based finite elements and a proposal for their applications are described. The shape functions and their derivatives of MLS-based finite elements are constructed using Moving-Least Square approximation. In MLS-based finite element, using the adequate influence domain of weight function used in MLS approximation, kronecker delta condition could be satisfied at the element boundary. Moreover, because of the characteristics of MLS approximation, we could easily add extra nodes at an arbitrary position in MLS-based finite elements. For these reasons, until now, several variable-node elements(2D variable element for linear case and quadratic case and 3D variable-node elements) and finite crack elements are developed using MLS-based finite elements concept. MLS-based finite elements could be extended to 2D variable-node triangle element, 2D finite crack triangle element, variable-node shell element, finite crack shell element, and 3D polyhedron element. In this paper, we showed the feasibility of 3D polyhedron element at the case of femur meshing.

This paper is for the first essential study on the development of unified finite element formulations for solving problems related to the dynamics/thermoelastics behavior of solids. In the first part of formulations, the finite element method is based on the introduction of a new quantity defined as heat displacement, which allows the heat conduction equations to be written in a form equivalent to the equation of motion, and the equations of coupled thermoelasticity to be written in a unified form. The equations obtained are used to express a variational formulation which, together with the concept of generalized coordinates, yields a set of differential equations with the time as an independent variable. Using the Laplace transform, the resulting finite element equations are described in the transform domain. In the second, the Laplace transform is applied to both the equation of heat conduction derived in the first part and the equations of motions and their corresponding boundary conditions, which is referred to the transformed equation. Selections of interpolation functions dependent on only the space variable and an application of the weighted residual method to the coupled equation result in the necessary finite element matrices in the transformed domain. Finally, to prove the validity of two approaches, a comparison with one finite element equation and the other is made term by term.
Variable-node finite element families, termed (4 + k + l + m + n)-node elements with an arbitrary number of nodes (k, l, m, and n) on each of their edges, are developed based on the generic point interpolation with special bases having slope discontinuities in two-dimensional domains. They retain the linear interpolation between any two neighboring nodes, and passes the standard patch test when subdomain-wise $2{\times}2$ Gauss integration is employed. Their shape functions are automatically generated on the master domain of elements although a certain number of nodes are inserted on their edges. The elements can provide a flexibility to resolve nonmatching mesh problems like mesh connection and adaptive mesh refinement. In the case of adaptive mesh refinement problem, so-called "1-irregular node rule" working as a constraint in performing mesh adaptation is relaxed by adopting the variable-node elements. Through several examples, we show the performance of the variable-node finite elements in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

We present a new global-local analysis with the aid of MLS(Moving Least Square) variable-node finite elements which can possess an arbitrary number of nodes on element master domain. It enables us to connect one finite element with a few finite elements without complex remeshing. Compared to other type global-local analysis, it does not require any superimposed mesh or need not solve the equilibrium equation twice. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme, we will show several examples in relation to capturing highly local stress field using global-local analysis.
This paper deals with the study of hydrodynamic pressure in reservoir adjacent to the concrete gravity dam subjected to dynamic excitation. Widely famous finite element method is used to discretize the reservoir domain for modelling purpose. Pressure is considered as nodal variable following Eulerian approach. A suitable nonreflecting boundary condition is applied at truncated face of reservoir to make the infinite reservoir to finite one for saving the computational cost. Thorough studies have been done on generation of hydrodynamic pressure in reservoir with variation of different geometrical properties. Velocity profile and hydrodynamic pressure are observed due to harmonic excitation for variation of inclination angle of dam reservoir interface. Effect of bottom slope angle and inclined length of reservoir bottom on hydrodynamic pressure coefficient of reservoir are also observed. There is significant increase in hydrodynamic pressure and distinct changes in velocity profile of reservoir are noticeable for change in inclination angle of dam reservoir interface. Change of bottom slope and inclined length of reservoir bottom are also governing factor for variation of hydrodynamic pressure in reservoir subjected to dynamic excitation.
The present study is concerned with the hydrostatic extrusion process for the copper-clad aluminum rod through metallurgical joining. The rigid viscoplastic finite element analyses are performed for the steady state extrusion process of the bimetal rod. An algorithm for finding the interface profile of the bimetal rod by tracking a particle path in Eulerian domain is presented. The distributions of the effective strain rate, equivalent stress and hardness are examined for the several extrusion ratios. Experiments are also carried out for the copper-clad aluminum rod at room temperature. It is found out that the finite element predictions are generally in good agreement with the experimental observations. The detail comparisons of the extrusion loads predicted by the element method with those by experiments are given.

The mixed finite element analysis is the most widely used method for saturated porous media. Generally, in this method, direct method and iterative method are proposed to obtain unknown variable, however, the iterative method is recommended because the method provide numerical stability and accuracy under the material properties for solid and fluid are different. In this paper, we introduce staggered method which has strong numerical stability, and FETI(Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting) which is one of decomposition methods are applied into the method in order to obtain numerical efficiency. In which, Lagrange Multipliers and conjugated gradient method to solve decomposed domain are proposed, and then, the proposed method is verified numerical efficiency by point to point MPI(Message Passing Interface) library.
In this paper, the numerical finite element formulations were derived for the linearized Navier-Stokes' equations with assumptions of two-dimensional incompressible, homogeneous viscous fluid field, and small oscillation and the FAMD (Fluid Added Mass and Damping) code was developed for practical applications calculating the fluid added mass and damping. In formulations, a fluid domain is discretized with C$\^$0/-type quadratic quadrilateral elements containing eight nodes using a mixed interpolation method, i.e., the interpolation function for the velocity variable is approximated by a quadratic function based on all eight nodal points and the interpolation function for the pressure variable is approximated by a linear function based on the four nodal points at vertices. Using the developed code, the various characteristics of the fluid added mass and damping are investigated for the concentric cylindrical shell and the actual hexagon arrays of the liquid metal reactor cores.

With alumina ceramics to copper brazement of cylindrical shape, the thermal stress analysis was carried out by finite element method. Elastic and plastic behaviour was considered to copper, but only elastic behaviour was considered to alumina. Also material properties of alumina and copper were considered in not constant values but variable functions dependent on temperature. The result of analysis is shown that maximum tensile longitudinal stress is occurred at perimeter of alumina side interface and maximum compressive radial and tangential stresses are occurred at center of alumina side interface. Because of bending effect, tensile raidial and tangential stresses are occurred at near bottom of alumina, far from interface.
