  • Fingerprint recognition and iris recognition, which are one of the biometric methods, are easily influenced by external factors such as sunlight. Recently, finger vein recognition is used as a method utilizing internal features. However, for accurate finger vein recognition, it is important to clearly separate vein and background regions. However, it is difficult to separate the vein region and background region due to the abnormalized illumination, and a method of separating the vein region and the background region after normalized the illumination of the input image has been proposed. In this paper, we proposed a method to enhance the quality improvement and improve the processing time compared to the existing finger vein recognition system binarization and labeling method of the image including the image stretching process based on the existing illumination normalization method.

  • Recently, the personal identification technologies using vein pattern of back of the hand, palm, and finger have been developed actively because it has the advantage that the vein blood vessel in the body is impossible to damage, make a replication and forge. However, it is difficult to extract clearly the vein region from captured vein images through common image prcessing based region segmentation method, because of the light scattering and non-uniform internal tissue by skin layer and inside layer skeleton, etc. Especially, it takes a long time for processing time and makes a discontinuity of blood vessel just in a image because it has non-uniform illumination due to use a locally different adaptive threshold for the binarization of acquired finger-vein image. To solve this problem, we propose illumination normalization based fast method for extracting the finger-vein region. The proposed method has advantages compared to the previous methods as follows. Firstly, for remove a non-uniform illumination of the captured vein image, we obtain a illumination component of the captured vein image by using a low-pass filter. Secondly, by extracting the finger-vein path using one time binarization of a single threshold selection, we were able to reduce the processing time. Through experimental results, we confirmed that the accuracy of extracting the finger-vein region was increased and the processing time was shortened than prior methods.

  • Recently, biometric techniques such as face recognition, finger-print recognition and iris recognition have been widely applied for various applications including door access control, finance security and electric passport. This paper presents the method of using finger-vein pattern for the personal identification. In general, when the finger-vein image is acquired from the camera, various conditions such as the penetrating amount of the infrared light and the camera noise make the segmentation of the vein from the background difficult. This in turn affects the system performance of personal identification. To solve this problem, we propose the novel and fast method for extracting the finger-vein region. The proposed method has two advantages compared to the previous methods. One is that we adopt a locally adaptive thresholding method for the binarization of acquired finger-vein image. Another advantage is that the simple morphological opening and closing are used to remove the segmentation noise to finally obtain the finger-vein region from the skeletonization. Experimental results showed that our proposed method could quickly and exactly extract the finger-vein region without using various kinds of time-consuming filters for preprocessing.

  • The finger vein recognition technology is a method to acquire a finger vein image by illuminating infrared light to the finger and to authenticate a person through processes such as feature extraction and matching. In order to recognize a finger vein, a 2D mask-based two-dimensional convolution method can be used to detect a finger edge but it takes too much computation time when it is applied to a low cost micro-processor or micro-controller. To solve this problem and improve the recognition rate, this study proposed an extraction method for the region of interest based on virtual core points and moving average filtering based on the threshold and absolute value of difference between pixels without using 2D convolution and 2D masks. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, 600 finger vein images were used to compare the edge extraction speed and accuracy of ROI extraction between the proposed method and existing methods. The comparison result showed that a processing speed of the proposed method was at least twice faster than those of the existing methods and the accuracy of ROI extraction was 6% higher than those of the existing methods. From the results, the proposed method is expected to have high processing speed and high recognition rate when it is applied to inexpensive microprocessors.

  • Iris recognition Is that identifies a user based on the unique iris muscle patterns which has the functionalities of dilating or contracting pupil region. Because it is reported that iris recognition is more accurate than other biometries such as face, fingerprint, vein and speaker recognition, iris recognition is widely used in the high security application domain. However, if unnecessary information such as eyelid and eyelash is included in iris region, the error for iris recognition is increased, consequently. In detail, if iris region is used to generate iris code including eyelash and eyelid, the iris codes are also changed and the error rate is increased. To overcome such problem, we propose the method of detecting eyelid by using pyramid searching parabolic deformable template. In addition, we detect the eyelash by using the eyelash mask. Experimental results show that EER(Equal Error Rate) for iris recognition using the proposed algorithm is lessened as much as $0.3\%$ compared to that not using it.

  • In this study, we performed to design an image guiding algorithm to improve the efficiency and safety of treatment of varicose vein by focused ultrasound. The algorithm was suggested by different guiding images according to the location of varicose veins. In the case of deep-seated varicose veins, the target area was marked on the surface of the blood vessel in the obtained cross-sectional blood vessel ultrasound image. In the case of the superficial varicose vein, A guiding system based on image segmentation algorithm of the vascular region was suggested and designed two different algorithms according to varicose veins progression degree. as a results, the algorithm based on ultrasound image show a small error with $830{\mu}m$ at maximum. However, the algorithm based on charge coupled device image has a maximum error of 8.3 mm in some data. Therefore, it is expected that additional study is needed for superficial varicose vein image guiding algorithm, and it is expected that the accuracy of blood vessel tracking should be evaluated by constructing simple system.

  • Radionuclide venographies were performed in 138 limbs of 58 patients and X-ray contrast venographies were performed in 23 paitents of them. Positive radionuclide venography findings were area of decreased sponding to the region of thrombosis, abnormal collateral flows below the lesion. The success rate of radionulide venography was 89% and the overall concordance between radionuclide venography and X-ray contrast venography was 91%. Radionuclide venography is simple and easy to perform and less invasive than X-ray contrast venography. These results indicate that radionuclide venography is the most ideal screening test for the detection of venous thrombosis in patient with signs & symptoms of deep vein thrombosis.

  • The objective of present study was to investigate the effect of seasons on reproductive performance of Hanwoo and Holstein heifers. Heat stress in summer or cold stress in winter stress to Hanwoo and Holstein heifers may bring reproduction failure, which would pose an important economic loss, even around Daegwallyeong region located in high mountainous area. Seasonal differences in the serum levels of LH, FSH and progesterone ($P_4$) in response to environmental factors (hot and cold) out of 20 pubertal Hanwoo heifers in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon Province and 20 non-lactating Holstein heifers in Chonan city of Republic of Korea at 2-3 years of age were compared. Blood samples for hormonal analysis were from jugular vein after detection of estrus repeatedly over four seasons within four-week intervals (Spring: May to June, Summer: July to August, Autumn: October to November and Winter: January to February). In Hanwoo heifer population, averages of LH and FSH concentration in spring and in summer were greater compared to those in winter (p<0.05). LH or FSH levels tended to be greater (p=0.06) in spring and less (p=0.09) in winter compared to the levels in autumn. Only in summer, cattle seemed to show lower LH or FSH secretion (p<0.05). Similar to the results in Hanwoo heifers, the serum concentrations of LH and FSH in Holstein heifers decreased further by heat stress in summer when P 4 levels were high during luteal phase. The results demonstrate significant effect of summer heat on reproduction of Hanwoo or Holstein heifers. Although parameters indicating the extent of heat stress were not measured in this study, we suggest that serum hormone levels could be considered as successful indicators of summer heat stress condition for Hanwoo and Holstein heifers even under rather cool summer climate.

  • Leaf samples and bulbs showing characteristic symptoms of virus infection were collected from Gang-won, Chung-nam, and Jeju Province of Korea in 2008-2009. Three viruses, Lily symptomless virus (LSV), Lily mottle virus (LMoV), and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) were detected by RT-PCR. Virus-infected plant samples were identified; 12 plants with LSV, 20 plants with LMoV, and 1 plant with CMV. Of the twelve LSV infected samples, seven samples were found to be mix-infected with LMoV and LSV. Symptoms of LMoV and LSV mixed infection were fairly severe, like as vein clearing, leaf curling, leaf mottling, leaf mosaic, and yellow streaking. Mixed infection with LMoV and LSV was also found in lily bulbs which have been stored under unfavorable environmental conditions. LMoV predominated in our tests, whereas spread of Lilyvirus X (LVX) was not found. The nucleotide sequences of coat protein (CP) region of seven isolates (4 LMoV, 2 LSV, and 1 CMV) were compared with the corresponding regions of LMoV (AJ564636), LSV (AJ516059) and CMV(AJ296154). The nucleotide sequence homologies between reference viruses and seven isolates were 95-99%. Complete sequencing of seven isolates is necessary to obtain more information on the molecular characteristics of these viruses as well as to increase sensitivity and rapidity of viral detection.
