  • In this paper, a conceptual design process for Very Light Jet aircraft has been proposed incorporating aircraft safety certification. During the proposed design process, satisfaction of the airworthiness certification for an intermediate resulting aircraft configuration is evaluated and then redesigns are carried out if necessary and until the designed aircraft configuration satisfies the airworthiness requirements. Certification database has been developed using FAR 23, AC 23, KAS 23, and CS 23 as the airworthiness certification. Based on the developed certification database Design Certifcation Related Table has been produced to use the airworthiness requirements as design constraints in the propsed design process. Using Quality Function Deployment the design variables for a redesign are carefully selected and a design optimization is performed. To demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of rapid aircraft conceptual design using the proposed approach, a Very Light Jet design optimization including a redesign of wing flap has been performed and the design results have been presented.

  • In this study, a robust aerospace system design process for the aerospace system is developed by considering the uncertainties of user requirements, manufacturing errors, and operational environment variation. User requirements are analyzed and quantified by decision making models and system engineering methods to select alternative concepts which satisfies the various requirements. Robust design and optimization method is applied to derive the robust solution of the selected system. First, a variance of objective function is calculated, and a mean value and a variance of target value are determined by the deterministic design optimization results of the system. A robust optimum design formulation is then needed to derive the robust solution that minimizes the variance of the response and moves the mean values to the target value. It is applied to Very Light Jet (VLJ) aircraft to which much attention is paid recently in civil aerospace market.

  • This paper focused on the possibility of face recognition using Flexible let Point Setting method in Gabor Filter Based Face Recognition. Gabor Filter is very sensible to the Texture variation. Therefore, any little change in the face expression or rotation of posture make recognition rate down significantly. A suggested solution for this problem is the Flexible Jet Point Setting. A significant effect of this method is that the number of Jet Point has been reduced from over 150 to under 30 even though the change of recognition rate between two methods is neglectable, Furthermore a set of feature values which results from a set of Gabor filtering became insensible to face variation such as expression, rotation, and light effect. Retinex Algorithm which has been developed by NASA are used as pre-processing.

  • We investigate the morphology of Active Galactic Nuclei(AGN) jets. AGN jets propagate over kpc $\~$ Mpc and their beam velocities are close to the speed of light. The reason why many jets propagate over so long a distance and sustain a very collimated structure is not well understood. It is argued that some dimensionless parameters, the density and the pressure ratio of the jet beam and the ambient gas, the Mach number of the beam, and relative speed of the beam compared to the speed of light, are very useful to understand the morphology of jets namely, bow shocks, cocoons, nodes etc. The role of each parameters has been studied by numerical simulations. But more research is necessary to understand it systematically. We have developed 2D relativistic hydrodynamic code to analyze relativistic jets. We pay attention to the propagation velocity which is derived from 1D momentum balance in the frame of the working surface. We show some of our models and discuss the dependence of the morphology of jets on the parameter.

  • The Bird strike to small aircraft has not been an issue because of it's low speed and usage as a private aircraft. So, the compliance of the bird strike regulation is limited to large fixed-wing aircraft such as the commuter category in FAR Part 23 and the civil aircraft in FAR Part 25, generally. However, the forecast of dramatic increasing of VLJ(Very Light Jet) and (light time of general aviation due to Air-taxi for the point to point transportation, would rise up the need of bird strike regulations and a safety enhancement in normal and utility categorized aircraft. In this study, the safety enhancement concept using a crushable foam for the bird strike to small aircraft wing leading edge, and the evaluation about the safety of the bird strike to small aircraft are proposed using the explicit finite element analysis.

  • The goals of this study are to elucidate the plasma effects on DNA molecules to apply some plasma based applications and also to find out the mechanisms of plasma-induced DNA damage in biomolecule. Nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma has much potential for medical, agricultural and food applications for the future. The atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) contains radicals, charged particles, low energy electrons, excited molecules and UV light. It has been started doing experiments using APPJ at the early 21th. And some recent results showed that APPJ has a possibility to apply to new fields like mentioned above. But it is kind of at the very early stages of plasma based application. It is definitely necessary much of theoretical and experimental studies to further understanding to use nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma in biomedical, agriculture and food parts. Here we introduce a new experimental system to study plasma effects on biomolecules. And we will show some recent results of LEE-induced DNA damage using electron irradiation apparatus under ultra-high vacuum.

  • For the very light jet aircraft design, the design baseline configuration has been selected using the logical decision making process, and the design optimization problem is formulated by considering the airworthiness regulations as design constraints. Airworthiness regulations are the minimum requirements for the safe aircraft flight and must be considered from the conceptual design stage. After carefully selecting the airworthiness constraints and the user specified requirements, a series of design making models including the affinity diagram, nested column diagram, quality function deployment (QFD), Pugh concept selection matrix, are used to find and evaluate alternative configuration baselines. From the feasible design space searching process, the best altenative design, which satisfies the airworthiness constraints while excluding the user subjective decisions as much as possible, has been successfully derived.

  • This research seeks to investigate the economic feasibility of a small size aircraft development and BASA certification enterprise. To achieve the objective, this research investigates cost which requires for proceeding a small size aircraft development and BASA certification enterprise. This research also investigates the economic effects and economic benefits acquired from exporting civil aircraft. Costs and benefits are assumed using cash flow by types of airplanes. On the basis of the cash flow, this research calculates B/C ratio, NPV, IRR for investigating the economic feasibility. The result shows that there are economic feasibility for both very light jet and piston aircraft. Between these two aircraft types, more economic feasibility exist for very light jet than piston aircraft.

  • Swirling flows are found in very wide range of applications, for examples, cyclone separators, spraying machines, heat exchangers and jet pumps, ect. Relatively, little work has been done on the swirl flow using flow visualization techniques. This study deals with many visualization techniques to study on swirling flow. These techniques are related to oil films methods, smoke, dye liquids, liquid crystal, stroboscope light, smoke wire, white light, naphthalene sublimation, LDV(lase doppler Velocimetry) and PIV(particle image velocimetry). The present work has handled single, annular, carved tube, swirl expansion and swirl wake using several visualization methods in the vertical and horizontal circular tube.

  • The method for spraying of liquids through an electrical field has become a printing method since it can make very small droplet. For electro-hydrodynamic jet printing to become a reliable jetting tool, the jetting performance should be characterized with respect to various jetting conditions. To optimize jetting conditions, the jetting behavior should be measured. In this study, we present a visualization techniques to measure jetting behavior from electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet head. Unlike most previous method, we use the CCD camera to measure the jetting behavior. For this purpose, LED light is synchronized with jetting signal and sequential image was obtained by adjusting the delay time of the LED light. Finally, merits and demerits of using CCD camera were discussed to measure jetting image from EHD inkjet head.
