고유수용성 조절과 시각적 피드백이 만성 편마비 환자의 안정성 한계에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of the Proprioceptive Control and Visual Feedback for the Limits of Stability in Patients with Chronic Hemiplegia)

  • Purpose: Hemiplegic patients usually present with difficulties in maintaining their balance. Balance retraining is a major component of a rehabilitation program for patients with neurological impairments. This study compared the effects of prorpioceptive exercise and visual feedback program on the limits of stability (LOS) in chronic hemiplegia patients. Methods: Thirty subjects (mean age $57.0{\pm}9.8$) were recruited. The subjects were divided into a proprioceptive group and a visual group. The subjects for the proprioceptive group participated in the proprioceptive exercise program for 4 weeks, and the visual group were treated with visual feedback training using a Balance Master. Results: At the 4 week follow-up test, the LOS in the proprioceptive group improved significantly in all directions (p<0.05). However, improvement was only observed in the forward direction in the visual feedback group. Therefore, the proprioceptive control approach improves the LOS in chronic hemiplegia patients. Conclusion: These results suggest that compared with physical therapy alone using a proprioceptive control approach to hemiplegia, there was no additional benefit of visual feedback training, such as Balance Master, when administrated in combination with other physical therapy interventions.

담론적 관점(discursive approach)에서 중1 수학 교과서의 그래프 정의 분석 (A discursive approach to analysis of definition of graph in first year middle school textbooks)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 담론적 관점에서 수학 교과서를 분석하기 위해 선행 연구를 바탕으로 분석틀을 재구성하고, 중1수학 교과서의 '그래프 정의'에서 단어와 시각적 매개체가 생성하는 의미와 그 통합 관계를 분석하는데 적용하는 것이다. 담론적 관점은 Sfard(2008)의 의사소통학적 관점과 Halliday(1985/2004)의 체계기능언어학을 바탕으로 발전된 사회기호학적 관점이 통합된 것으로 이를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 단어와 시각적 매개체가 생성하는 의미는 교과서에 구현된 수학을 관념적 메타기능이 실현하는 의미 측면과 학생의 수학적 활동의 참여 유도성을 대인관계적 메타기능이 실현하는 의미 측면으로 구분하여 분석하였고, 단어와 시각적 매개체의 통합 관계는 텍스트적 메타기능 측면에서 분석하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 단어의 관념적 의미는 수학 담론의 밀도가 높았을 뿐 아니라 수학적 활동의 주체가 모호하였고 학생 참여를 요구하는 단어의 대인관계적 의미는 사고보다는 주로 행동 측면이 강조되었다. 시각적 매개체가 구성하는 관념적 의미에서는 내러티브 다이어그램이 결여되었고 대인관계적 의미에서는 정보 제공에 질적 차이가 있었다. 둘째, 단어와 시각적 매개체의 통합 관계는 구체화, 설명, 유사, 보완처럼 다양한 방식을 통한 풍부한 수학 의미 형성을 위해 통합 관계의 다양성을 지향할 필요가 있었다. 이러한 결과는 수학 교과서를 분석하는데 의미를 생성하는 도구로서 단어와 함께 시각적 매개체의 사용을 분석하고 단어와 시각적 매개체의 통합 관계를 분석하였기 때문에 담론적 관점에서 교과서 분석의 새로운 분석틀을 제공한 의미가 있다.

비정밀접근절차 체크리스트 개발연구 (Development of Non-precision Approach Procedures Checklist)

  • After a thorough investigation of aviation accidents involving Korean national carriers both inside and outside of Korea and also after reviewing catastrophic events involving foreign carriers in Korea, we found numerous accidents that caused fatalities and serious personal injuries. Although the aircrafts involved were found to have no specific defects, many of the accidents were caused by the pilot's misjudgement according to previous studies. Our research is to find an new procedure to help the prevention of similar accidents by focusing particularly on CFIT accidents during the procedural operations of Non Precision Approach, Circling Approach and Visual Approach. Therefore, we emphasize the significance of this research on the development of the new checklist that will help achieve a safe and effective procedural operation for non precision approaches.

강하각 유지를 위한 강하율 산정 연구 (A Study on the Calculation of the FPM for the Descent Angle)

  • When landing an aircraft descent-speed, wind around the airport, and regulations are important indicators for the pilot to decide whether to land in the Final Approach. In this study, in order to maintain a decent angle accessible to the airport, the pilot predicts an appropriate decent rate suitable for wind direction, wind speed, and speed to make a stable landing. To confirm this, the decent rate according to the speed and speed of wind was calculated using the information actually measured on the B737NG aircraft and compared with the theoretical figures. The purpose of this study is to ensure that the pilot can make a stable landing at a given FPM (Feet Per Minute) when a visual approach and non-normal approach is required at an airport designed with a somewhat higher descent angle.

Students' Visual Representation of Mathematics

  • This paper takes another approach in assessing students' perception of mathematics. Instead of asking for verbal description of the students' perception of mathematics, we asked the respondents who were all college students to draw their perception of mathematics. This relatively new approach enabled students to take a second look of how they perceived math and, at the same time, explored students' creativity and provided a less austere appearance to mathematics which was taken usually in a more formal and severe manner. This approach of assessing students' perception of mathematics generated new information that could not be normally gleaned from other approaches like Likert Scale. Some drawings of mathematics of the respondents reinforced their math affect towards mathematics. For those who hated math, their drawings revealed so the same is true with those who loved mathematics. Examining the visual representations of mathematics and looking for commonalities, the researcher found a number of interesting themes that may shed some light to educators' understanding of students' math affect.

  • The robustness and reliability of vision algorithms is the key issue in robotic research and industrial applications. In this paper, the robust real time visual tracking in complex scene is considered. A common approach to increase robustness of a tracking system is to use different models (CAD model etc.) known a priori. Also fusion of multiple features facilitates robust detection and tracking of objects in scenes of realistic complexity. Because voting is a very simple or no model is needed for fusion, voting-based fusion of cues is applied. The approach for this algorithm is tested in a 3D Cartesian robot which tracks a toy vehicle moving along 3D rail, and the Kalman filter is used to estimate the motion parameters, namely the system state vector of moving object with unknown dynamics. Experimental results show that fusion of cues and motion estimation in a tracking system has a robust performance.

  • In this paper, an eye-in-hand visual servoing strategy for keeping feature points within the FOV(field-of-view) is proposed. We first specify the FOV constraint which must be satisfied to keep the feature points within the FOV. It is expressed as the inequality relationship between (i) the LOS(jine-of-sight) angles of the center of the feature points from the optical axis of the camera and (ii) the distance between the object and the camera. We then design a nonlinear feedback controller which decouples linearly the translational and rotational control loops. Finally, we show that appropriate choice of the controller gains assures to satisfy the FOV constraint. The main advantage of our approach over the previous ones is that the trajectory of the camera is smooth and circular-like. Furthermore, ours can be applied to the large camera displacement problem.

Small Object Segmentation Based on Visual Saliency in Natural Images

  • Object segmentation is a challenging task in image processing and computer vision. In this paper, we present a visual attention based segmentation method to segment small sized interesting objects in natural images. Different from the traditional methods, we first search the region of interest by using our novel saliency-based method, which is mainly based on band-pass filtering, to obtain the appropriate frequency. Secondly, we applied the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to locate the object region. By incorporating the visual attention analysis into object segmentation, our proposed approach is able to narrow the search region for object segmentation, so that the accuracy is increased and the computational complexity is reduced. The experimental results indicate that our proposed approach is efficient for object segmentation in natural images, especially for small objects. Our proposed method significantly outperforms traditional GMM based segmentation.

Analyzing Construction Workers' Recognition of Hazards by Estimating Visual Focus of Attention

  • High injury and fatality rates remain a serious problem in the construction industry. Many construction injuries and fatalities can be prevented if workers can recognize potential hazards and take actions in time. Many efforts have been devoted in improving workers' ability of hazard recognition through various safety training and education methods. However, a reliable approach for evaluating this ability is missing. Previous studies in the field of human behavior and phycology indicate that the visual focus of attention (VFOA) is a good indicator of worker's actual focus. Towards this direction, this study introduces an automated approach for estimating the VFOA of equipment operators using a head orientation-based VFOA estimation method. The proposed method is validated in a virtual reality scenario using an immersive head mounted display. Results show that the proposed method can effectively estimate the VFOA of test subjects in different test scenarios. The findings in this study broaden the knowledge of detecting the visual focus and distraction of construction workers, and envision the future work in improving work's ability of hazard recognition.
