Test of the optimum condition of solid phase micro extraction(SPME) was performed by use of 5 vol-atile components in dilute aqueous solution. Volatile components of Sancho(Zanthoxylum schinifolium) were isolated by SPME method and were analyzed by GC/MSD and compared with volatile compone-nts isolated by simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) method. Total 31 components were identified by comparing gas chromatography retention time and mass spectral data. The major compounds were limonene geranyl acetate $\beta$-phellandrene phellandral mycene linalool rose oxide caproic acid and caprylic acid SPME sampling procedure was found to be a good method for qualitative analysis of the volatile components.
This study investigated the chemical composition of headspace gas from white-flowered lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner). Volatile flavor compositions of headspace from white-flowered lotus (floral leaf, stamen, flower stalk, stem) were investigated through the solid-phase microextraction method using polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene fiber. The headspace was directly transferred to a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sixty-three volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus floral leaves, and undecanoic acid (7.81%) was the most abundant component. Fifty-three volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus stamina, and isobutylidene phthalide (7.94%) was the most abundant component. Forty-four volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus flower stalks, and 3-butyl dihydrophthalide (11.23%) was the most abundant component. Fifty-nine volatile flavor constituents were detected in the headspace of lotus stems, and ligustilide (16.15%) was the most abundant component. The content of phthalides was higher in the headspace of flower stalks and stems, while alcohols and acids were the predominant compounds in lotus floral leaves.
Volatile compounds in Elsholtzia splendens were extracted by solid phase microextraction (SPME). Two kinds of SPME fiber, carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (CAR/PDMS) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were used to determine the selectivity of the fibers to the different flavor compounds present in the Elsholtzia splendens. Identification of volatile compounds was based on the linear retention indices (RI) and the comparison of their mass spectra with those of on-computer library. Thirty compounds were identified in the volatile compounds extracted by CAR/PDMS fiber, including 1 aldehyde, 5 alcohols, 3 hydrocarbons, 17 terpene hydrocarbons, 3 ketones and 1 miscellaneous. And 5 alcohols, 3 hydrocarbons, 18 terpene hydrocarbons, 3 ketones and 2 miscellaneouses were identified in PDMS fiber. These results suggested that the selectivity of PDMS fiber was similar to that of CAR/PDMS fiber in Elsholtzia splendens. The major volatile compounds were naginataketone and elsholtziaketone in Elsholtzia splendens.
In this study, the volatile compounds in 9 commercial fermented soybean pastes were extracted and analyzed by headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), respectively. A total of 63 volatile components, including 21 esters, 7 alcohols, 7 acids, 8 pyrazines, 5 volatile phenols, 3 ketones, 6 aldehydes, and 6 miscellaneous compounds, were identified. Esters, acids, and pyrazines were the largest groups among the quantified volatiles. About 50% of the total quantified volatile material was contributed by 5 compounds in 9 soybean paste samples; ethyl hexadecanoate, acetic acid, butanoic acid, 2/3-methyl butanoic acid, and tetramethyl-pyrazine. Three samples (CJW, SIN, and HAE) made by Aspergillus oryzae inoculation showed similar volatile patterns as shown in principal component analyses to GC-MS data sets, which showed higher levels in ethyl esters and 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol. Traditional fermented soybean pastes showed overall higher levels in pyrazines and acids contents.

A theoretical analysis for the characteristics of pyrolysis and combustion of solid fuel was carried out in the present study. The hollow cylindrical combustion model including gas phase and solid fuel at inside and outside respectively was developed for the numerical analysis and parametric studies. The effects of volatile contents in the porous solid fuel and Reynolds number at inlet of gas phase on the characteristics of pyrolysis and combustion such as the radial, axial and time variations of volatile mass flux through porous solid fuel, temperature, mass fractions of gaseous fuel and oxidizer, and flame shape were investigated in the parametric studies. The results of the present study show that the flame produced by the volatiles moves to the downstream of fuel with accelerating velocity with time until extinction is occurred resulting from the completion of pyrolysis. When flame is employed with smaller amount of volatiles content in the solid fuel, the flame sheet exists closer to the inner wall of solid fuel. As Reynolds number at inlet increases, the flame sheet moves to the inner wall due to effect of convection even though the volatiles by pyrolysis increases.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of heating, fiber type used in solid-phase microextraction (SPME, two phase vs three phase) and storage time on the volatile compounds of porcine M. longissimus dorsi (LD). Volatile compounds were measured using a gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with a quadrupole mass analyzer. Among the volatile compounds identified, aldehydes (49.33%), alcohols (24.63%) and ketones (9.85%) were higher in pre-heated loins ($100^{\circ}C$/30 min), whereas, alcohols (34.33%), hydrocarbons (22.84%) and ketones (16.88%) were higher in non-heated loins. Heating of loins induced the formation of various volatile compounds such as aldehydes (hexanal) and alcohols. The total contents of hydrocarbons, alcohols, and carboxylic acids were higher in two phase fibers, whereas those of esters tended to be higher in three-phase fibers (p<0.05). Most volatile compounds increased (p<0.05) with increased storage time. Thus, the analysis of volatile compounds were affected by the fiber type, while heating and refrigerated storage of pork M. longissimus dorsi increased the volatile compounds derived from lipid oxidation and amino acid catabolism, respectively.
Identifying the extracellular metabolites of microorganisms in fresh vegetables is industrially useful for assessing the quality of processed foods. Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (PCC) is a plant pathogenic bacterium that causes soft rot disease in cabbages. This microbial species in plant tissues can emit specific volatile molecules with odors that are characteristic of the host cell tissues and PCC species. In this study, we used headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) to identify volatile compounds (VCs) in PCC-inoculated cabbage at different storage temperatures. HS-SPME-GC-MS allowed for recognition of extracellular metabolites in PCC-infected cabbages by identifying specific volatile metabolic markers. We identified 4-ethyl-5-methylthiazole and 3-butenyl isothiocyanate as markers of fresh cabbages, whereas 2,3-butanediol and ethyl acetate were identified as markers of soft rot in PCC-infected cabbages. These analytical results demonstrate a suitable approach for establishing non-destructive plant pathogen-diagnosis techniques as alternatives to standard methods, within the framework of developing rapid and efficient analytical techniques for monitoring plant-borne bacterial pathogens. Moreover, our techniques could have promising applications in managing the freshness and quality control of cabbages.
In this study, volatile compounds in nine commercial Japanese distilled liquors (Shochu) were isolated by headspace solid-phase microexrraction (SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry (MS). A total of 76 volatile components, including 48 esters, 13 alcohols, and 15 miscellaneous components, were identified. Esters and alcohols constituted the largest groups of quantified volatiles. Differences in volatile components among the distilled liquors and possible sample grouping were examined by applying principal component analyses to the GC-MS data sets. The first and second principal components explained 77.92% of the total variation across the samples. The samples using barley koji showed higher overall concentrations of total volatile components. Additionally, the principal component analysis did not reveal any sample grouping based on the raw material used.
High-solid anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge achieves highly efficient volatile solid reduction, and production of volatile fatty acid (VFA) and methane compared with conventional low-solid anaerobic digestion. In this study, the potential mechanisms of the better performance in high-solid anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge were investigated by using 454 high-throughput pyrosequencing and real-time PCR to analyze the microbial characteristics in sewage sludge fermentation reactors. The results obtained by 454 highthroughput pyrosequencing revealed that the phyla Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes were the dominant functional microorganisms in high-solid and low-solid anaerobic systems. Meanwhile, the real-time PCR assays showed that high-solid anaerobic digestion significantly increased the number of total bacteria, which enhanced the hydrolysis and acidification of sewage sludge. Further study indicated that the number of total archaea (dominated by Methanosarcina) in a high-solid anaerobic fermentation reactor was also higher than that in a low-solid reactor, resulting in higher VFA consumption and methane production. Hence, the increased key bacteria and methanogenic archaea involved in sewage sludge hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis resulted in the better performance of high-solid anaerobic sewage sludge fermentation.
The volatile composition of veal has yet to be reported and is one of the important factors determining meat character and quality. To identify the most important aroma compounds in veal from Holstein bull calves fed one of three diets, samples were subjected to solid-phase microextraction (SPME) combined with gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Most of the important odorants were aldehydes and alcohols. For group A (veal calves fed entirely on milk for 90 d before slaughter), the most abundant compound class was the aldehydes (52.231%), while that was alcohols (26.260%) in group C (veal calves fed starter diet for at least 60 d before slaughter). In both classes the absolute percentages of the volatile compounds in veal were different indicating that the veal diet significantly (p<0.05) affected headspace volatile composition in veal as determined by principal component analysis (PCA). Twenty three volatile compounds showed significance by using a partial least-squared discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) (VIP>1). The establishment of the global volatile signature of veal may be a useful tool to define the beef diet that improves the organoleptic characteristics of the meat and consequently impacts both its taste and economic value.
