  • The relationship between homeownership and participation in giving and volunteering overall indicates that homeowners are more likely to give and participate in volunteering organizations than renters. This study compared 'giving and participation in volunteering between homeowners(n=6,078) and renters(3,587) in the 14th Korean Welfare Panel Survey data collected in 2019. The outcome measure of study is a binary outcome of giving and volunteering participation. This study accounted for a bias arising from selection on observables. Specifically, this study employed a recursive bivariate probit model to simultaneously estimate respondents' participation in giving and volunteering participation and their selection of homeownership. Findings from this study have provided some evidence that homeowners and renters have different behaviors in giving and volunteering participation. Finally, issues relating to homeownership and social outcomes were discussed. Implications for social work practice and research were further discussed.

  • Using a national survey data conducted by the Beautiful Foundation, this study attempts to examine the bilateral relationships between philanthropic effort and social trust and between volunteering effort and social trust by using simultaneous equation model. This study also attempts to examine the socialization effect and intergenerational effect of philanthropy and volunteering in family, school, and community. This study found that both philanthropic effort and volunteering effort have a bilateral relationship with social trust. The bilateral relationship between giving and volunteering and social trust suggests that not only can social trust affect the increase of giving and volunteering but giving and volunteering can also influence social trust. Thus, by strengthening trust and facilitating giving and volunteering, we can construct and promote culture of sharing in our society. On the other hand, in the analysis on individual's educational experience in giving and volunteering during school years and individual's family experience (parental practice) in giving and volunteering during school years, it was found that family experience was statistically significant on philanthropic effort and volunteering effort. The result suggests that considering the validity of intergenerational effect in giving and volunteering, it is strategically vital for our society to facilitate and promote family practice in giving and volunteering throughout diverse programs and social marketing. Although this study has a limitation due to the limitedness of the original data, it made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge on the relationship between giving and volunteering and social trust by using elaborate analysis methods. This study emphasizes the necessity of continuous research; more advanced and systematic study based on a more elaborate model and solid data such panel data should be continued for a better understanding of philanthropic and volunteering behavior that can be an important soil for the development of nonprofit human service organizations. Finally, based on the results of the study, this study discusses research directions and practical implications to deepen and broaden the culture of sharing in Korea.

Family supports, the volunteering support system of corporation, various human relations in volunteering sites are selected and empirically tested as variables predicting the differential responses after volunteer activities. Questionnaire data were collected from 250 corporate volunteers and analyzed through hierarchical regression analysis. The results showed that while family supports have no significant effects on volunteering responses, corporate support system of volunteering have significant effects. • Our society has had a growing interest in a family volunteering activity which has been proposed to be helpful to strengthen the health of the families. Thus this could be a new alternative strategy for motivating a family life as well as activating a volunteering activity which takes a major portion in the source for social welfare, as a precautionary measure against various social problems. This research therefore studied the effects of the family volunteering activity on the status of family health on the purpose for providing social work implications to activate family volunteering and to enhance the degree of family health. The study subjects were whole family members in Korea (n=494) who had participated in a family volunteering program more than 6 months (experimental group). The control subjects (n=534) were from family members without having an experience in a family volunteering program (control group). The results demonstrated that experimental group experiencing family volunteering activities represents significantly higher status of family health regarding all the study fields, e.g., family values in common, autonomy or flexibility for family, family commitment, communication within a family, family oriented problem-solving ability, compared with control group. Even the cases of control group which were regularly engaged in the social activities together, showed the lower status of family health, as compared with families having experiences in the family volunteering activity. Accordingly, family volunteering experiences has taken more favorable influences upon the status of family health than any other family activities. Therefore, the present study suggests as follows for activating family volunteering activities: 1) the development and management of programs suitable for the voluntary activities of a family unit; 2) the flexible application of the concept of family volunteering; 3) the necessity of connection between various institutions which perform family volunteering services; 4) flexible work system based on individuality getting ready for the time for the family volunteering activity; and 5) the development of the circumstances for family members who need to be taken care of.
