Characteristics of bubble driven wakes were investigated in a simulated GTL process(0.102 m ${\times}$ 1.5 m in height) with viscous liquid medium. Effects of gas velocity(0.04 ~ 0.12 m/s) and liquid viscosity(0.001 ~ 0.050 $Pa{\cdot}s$) on the wake characteristics such as rising velocity, frequency, size and holdup were determined by employing a resistivity probe method. The wake phase formed behind the rising multi-bubbles as well as single bubbles were detected effectively from the conductivity fluctuations measured by the probe. Compressed, filtered and regulated air and aqueous solutions of Carboxy Methyl Cellulose(CMC) were used as a dispersed gas phase and a continuous liquid medium, respectively. It was found that the rising velocity and size of wake phase increased with an increase in gas velocity or liquid viscosity. The holdup and frequency of wake phase increased with increasing gas velocity due to the increase of gas input into the process with increasing gas velocity. However, the values of holdup and frequency of wake phase decreased with increasing liquid viscosity, since the size of bubbles and thus that of wakes increased with increasing liquid viscosity. The ratio of wake holdup to that of gas phase, which was in the range of 0.25 ~ 0.48, increased with an increase in liquid viscosity but decreased with gas velocity. The wake characteristics were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions.
Near-wake flow field of a circular cylinder is studied by means of a cinematic PIV system with high sampling rate and large internal memory block. Experiments are conducted in a closed-cycle water tunnel system and a cross-correlation algorithm in conjunction with FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis and an offset correlation technique is used for vector processing. With the help of very high sampling frequency compared to the shedding frequency, it is possible to obtain phase-averaged information of the three-dimensional wake, even though the shedding is not forced but natural. Phase-locked vortical structures observed simultaneously from the spanwise and cross-stream planes are displayed in the wake-transition regime where fine-scale secondary vortices have a spanwise wavelength or around one diameter. Spatial relations and temporal evolutions of the primary Karman vortex and the secondary vortex are also discussed schematically.
Three kinds of functional regions such as continuous slurry(${\varepsilon}_f$), bubble(${\varepsilon}_b$) and wake(${\varepsilon}_w$) regions were identified, and the individual phase holdups of each functional region were determined in a three-phase slurry bubble column of 0.152 m ID. The holdups of bubble and wake were measured by adopting the electrical resistivity probe method. Effects of gas velocity and solid concentration in the slurry phase on the individual holdups of functional regions in the column were discussed. The holdup of continuous slurry phase decreased but that of bubble or wake increased, with an increase in the gas velocity in the column. The increase of solid content in the slurry phase could lead to the increase in the holdup of continuous slurry phase but decrease in the bubble or wake holdup. The portion of wake holdup was in the range of 15~40% of the bubble holdup, which decreased with increasing gas velocity or solid content in the slurry phase. The individual holdups of three functional regions were well correlated with operating variables within this experimental conditions.
Holdup characteristics of bubble, wake and continuous liquid phases were investigated in bubble columns with viscous liquid media. Effects of column diameter(0.051, 0.076, 0.102 and 0.152 m ID), gas velocity($U_G$=0.02~0.16 m/s) and liquid viscosity(${\mu}_L$=0.001~0.050 $Pa{\cdot}s$) of continuous liquid media on the holdups of bubble, wake and continuous liquid phases were discussed. The three phase such as bubble, wake and continuous liquid phases were classified successfully by adapting the dual electrical resistivity probe method. Compressed filtered air and water or aqueous solutions of CMC(Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) were used as a gas and a liquid phase, respectively. To detect the wake as well as bubble phases in the bubble column continuously, a data acquisition system(DT 2805 Lab Card) with personal computer was used. The analog signals obtained from the probe circuit were processed to produce the digital data, from which the wake phase was detected behind the multi-bubbles as well as single bubbles rising in the bubble columns. The holdup of bubble and wake phases decreased but that of continuous liquid media increased, with an increase in the column diameter or liquid viscosity. However, the holdup of bubble and wake phases increased but that of continuous media decreased with an increase in the gas velocity. The holdup ratio of wake to wake to bubble phase decreased with an increase in the column diameter or gas velocity, however, increased with an increase in the viscosity of con-tinuous liquid media. The holdups of bubble, wake and continuous liquid media could be correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions as: ${\varepsilon}_B=0.043D^{-0.18}U_G^{0.56}{\mu}_L^{-0.13}$, ${\varepsilon}_W=0.003D^{-0.85}U_G^{0.46}{\mu}_L^{-0.10}$, ${\varepsilon}_C=1.179D^{0.09}U_G^{-0.13}{\mu}_L^{0.04}$.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the reduced frequency effect on the near-wake of an elliptic airfoil oscillating in pitch. The airfoil was sinusoidally pitched around the center of the chord between -5$^{\circ}$and +25$^{\circ}$angles of attack at an airspeed of 3.4 m/s. The chord Reynolds number and reduced frequencies were 3.3 ${\times}$10$^4$, and 0.1, 0.7, respectively Phase-averaged axial velocity and turbulent intensity profiles are presented to show the reduced frequency effects on the near-wake behind the airfoil oscillating In pitch. Axial velocity defects in the near-wake region have a tendency to increase in response to a reduced frequency during pitch up motion, whereas it tends to decrease during pitch down motion at a positive angle of attack. Turbulent intensity at positive angles of attack during the pitch up motion decreased in response to a reduced frequency, whereas turbulent intensity during the pitch down motion varies considerably with downstream stations. Although the true instantaneous angle of attack compensated for a phase-lag is large, the wake thickness of an oscillating airfoil is not always large because of laminar or turbulent separation.
Two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted at a low Reynolds number Re = 100 to investigate the near wake of three identical circular cylinders that are arranged in an equilateral triangular configuration. The incident angle of the three-cylinder configuration with respect to incoming flow is varied from θ = 0° to 60°, while the spacing between adjacent cylinders (L) covers a wide range of L/D = 1.25-7.0, where D is diameter of the cylinder. Typical flow structures in the near wake of the three-cylinder configuration are identified, including a single Karman vortex street, bistable flip-flopping near wake, anti-phase and/or in-phase vortex shedding, shear layer reattachment, and vortex impingement, depending on the configuration (L/D, θ). The behavior of Strouhal number (St) is discussed in detail, echoing the distinct structures of near wake. Furthermore, fluid forces on the individual cylinders are examined, which, though highly depending on (L/D, θ), exhibit a close correlation to the near wake behavior.
Plasma melatonin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and body temperature were measured simultaneously and continuously before and after the sleep-wake cycle was shifted in 4 healthy males and changes in the circadian rhythm itself and in the phase relationship among these circadian rhythms were determined. Normal sleep-wake cycle (sleep hours: 2300-0700) was delayed by 10 h (sleep hours: 0900-1700) during the experiment. Even after this shift the typical melatonin rhythm was maintained: low during daytime and high during night. The melatonin rhythm was gradually delayed day by day. The TSH rhythm was also maintained fundamentally during 3 consecutive days of altered sleep-wake cycle. The phase was also delayed gradually but remarkably. The daily rhythm of body temperature was changed by the alteration of sleep-wake cycle. The body temperature began to decrease at the similar clock time as in the control but the decline during night awake period was less steep and the lowered body temperature persisted during sleep. The hormonal profiles during the days of shifted sleep/wake cycle suggest that plasma melatonin and TSH rhythms are basically regulated by an endogenous biological clock. The parallel phase shift of melatonin and TSH upon the change in sleep-wake cycle suggests that a common unitary pacemaker probably regulates these two rhythms. The reversal phase relationship between body temperature and melatonin suggests that melatonin may have a hypothermic effect on body temperature. The altered body temperature rhythm suggests that the awake status during night may inhibit the circadian decrease in body temperature and that sleep sustains the lowered body temperature. It is probable but uncertain that there ave causal relationships among sleep, melatonin, TSH, and body temperature.

Near-wake flow field downstream of a circular cylinder in the wake-transition regime where fine-scale secondary vortices have a spanwise wavelength of around one diameter has been studied by means of phase-averaging from cinematic PIV data. A cross-correlation algorithm in conjunction with the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analysis and an offset correlation technique is used for obtaining the velocity vectors. Which the help of very high sampling rate compared to the shedding frequency, it is possible to obtain phase-averaged flow fields although the shedding is not forced but natural. Phase -locked three-dimensional vortical structures are reconstructed form the phase-averaged data in one x-y(cross-sectional) and several z-x(spanwise-streamwise)planes. In this process of phase-averaging in a z-x plane, a technique to freeze the secondary vortices relative to the centerline is applied. The formation process of the secondary vortices is shown by considering spatial relations between the primary Karman and the secondary vortices and their temporal evolutions.
The objective of present paper is to apply a stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techiique for measuring the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. It is essential to measure 3-components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller. The out-of-plane velocity component was measured using the particle images captured by two CCD cameras in the angular displacement configuration.400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of few different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranged from the trailing edge to the region of one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were formed periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component has large values at the tip and trailing votices. With going downstream, the axial turbulence intensity and the strength of tip vortices were decreased due to the visous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction. The blade wake traveling at higher speed with respect to the tip vortex overtakes and interacts with tip vortices formed from the previous blade. Tip vortices are separated from the wake and show oscillating trajectory

Turbulent wake behind a ship propeller has been investigated using the adaptive hybrid 2-frame PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry). 400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured according to 4 different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the vortical structure of near wake within one propeller diameter downstream. The phase averaged mean velocity fields show the potential wake and the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. As the tip vortex evolves downstream, the slipstream is contracted and the turbulent intensity is decreased with viscous dissipation and turbulent diffusion.
