  • The multistage wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) with multiple remote nodes (RN) can accommodate widely spread subscribers efficiently and it increases the channel usage. We implemented a multistage RN using band add-drop filters and it was applied to a wavelength-locked Fabry-Petor laser diode based gigabit WDM-PON.

  • For multi parameter optimization of Raman Fiber Amplifier (RFA), a simple genetic algorithm is presented in the scenario of a 320 channel Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed (DWDM) system at channel spacing of 25 GHz. The large average gain (> 22 dB) is observed from optimized RFA with the optimized parameters, such as 39.6 km of Raman length with counter-propagating pumps tuned to 205.5 THz and 211.9 THz at pump powers of 234.3 mW, 677.1 mW respectively. The gain flattening filter (GFF) has also been optimized to further reduce the gain ripple across the frequency range from 190 to 197.975 THz for broadband amplification.

  • This paper proposes a new dynamic wavelength allocation algorithm for TWDM PON (time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network) which comprises of multiple ONUs (optical network units) which have low-speed wavelength tuner. The wavelength tuner requires large amount of frame times to tune its wavelength. An OLT (optical line termination) performs a dynamic bandwidth allocation after the wavelengths of ONUs are determined.

  • We improved the performance of the spectrum-sliced light source for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks by employing a Fabry-Perot laser diode(FP-LD). We found that the FP-LDs can suppress the intensity noise as significantly as using a gain-saturated semiconductor optical amplifier. The transmission characteristics were measured and analyzed in both conditions with and without employing an FP-LD.

  • This paper evaluates performance of a dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation algorithm of TWDM PON (time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network) which consists of an OLT (optical line termination) and multiple ONU (optical network unit). The allocation algorithm reduces the number of upstream wavelengths to save power. Using self-similar traffic, we simulate TWDM PON systems and measure the average packet delay and the average number of upstream wavelengths.

Optical Transmission Link with Balanced and Unbalanced Dispersion Distributions and Non-midway Optical Phase Conjugator

  • We propose a dispersion-managed link with a non-midway optical phase conjugator (OPC), in which the residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of each fiber span is different for each transmission section before and after OPC. We numerically demonstrate the compensation for 960-Gb/s wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) signals distorted by chromatic dispersion and Kerr nonlinearity of the fiber. We consider different cases for non-midway OPC, including six fiber spans - OPC - 14 fiber spans and 14 fiber spans - OPC - 6 fiber spans. The numerical results show that the compensation of the distorted 960 Gb/s WDM is more efficient when the OPC is placed after 6-th fiber span as compared to after the 14-th fiber span. Our simulation results also indicate that the compensation effect increases when the difference in net residual dispersion between both transmission sections is not large, but they are not the same. Under this condition, the larger the magnitude of the RDPSs of each fiber span, the greater the compensation.

  • The large potential bandwidth available in wavelength-division multiplexed optical networks makes this technology of crucial importance for satisfying the ever increasing capacity requirements of the next-generation Internet. In this scenario, the routing and wavelength assignment(RWA) problem that concerns determining the optical paths and wavelengths to be used for connection establishment in a wavelength-routed network, is still one of the most important open issues. In this paper we propose a new online dynamic grooming-capable RWA heuristic scheme working on wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) networks as a multistage selection process. The proposed algorithm is transparent with respect to the presence of wavelength converters, achieves very low connection rejection ratios with minimal computational complexity and is appropriate for the modern multilayer optical circuit and wavelength switched networks with sparse wavelength conversion capability.
