  • A FEA(finite element analysis) model was proposed to study stress and strain distributions in thick composites with various types of fiber waviness under tensile and compressive loadings. Three types of model were considered in this study: uniform fiber waviness, graded fiber waviness and localized fiber waviness models. In the analysis, both material and geometrical nonlinearities due to fiber waviness were incorporated into the model utilizing energy density and incremental method. The strain distributions of uniform fiber waviness model were strongly influenced whereas the stress distributions were little influenced by fiber waviness. The stress and strain distributions of graded and localized fiber waviness models showed more complex distributions than those of uniform fiber waviness model due to the variation of fiber waviness along the thickness and length directions. It was concluded that the stress and strain distributions of composites with fiber waviness were significantly affected by types of fiber waviness.

  • Fiber waviness is one of manufacturing defects encountered frequently in thick composite structures. It affects significantly on the behavior as well as strength of thick composites. The effects of fiber waviness on tensile/compressive nonlinear elastic behavior and strength of thick composite with fiber waviness are studied theoretically and experimentally. FEA(Finite Element Analysis) models are proposed to predict tensile/compressive nonlinear behavior and strength of thick composites. In the FEA models, both material and geometric nonlinearities were incorporated into the model using energy density, iterative mapping and incremental method. Also Tsai-Wu criteria was adopted to predict the strength of thick composites with fiber waviness. Tensile and compressive tests were conducted on the specimens with uniform fiber waviness. It was observed that the degree of fiber waviness in composites significantly affected the nonlinear behavior and strength of the composites

  • The research presents an analytical theory to calculate the characteristics of the bal bearing with waviness in its rolling elements considering the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of bal. The effects of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment are introduced to the kinematic constraints and force equilibrium equations. and the waviness of rolling elements is modeled by sinusoidal function to calculate the contact force at each ball. The numerical solutions of governing equation of berating due to waviness are calculated by using the Newton-Raphson method. The accuracy of the research is validated by comparing the contact force. contact angle in case of considering the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of bal and the contact force and vibration frequencies in cases of considering waviness with the prior researches respectively. It investigates the stiffness, contact force. displacement and vibration frequencies of the ball bearing considering not only the centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of ball but also the waviness of the rolling elements.

  • This research presents a nonlinear model to analyze the ball bearing nitration due to the waviness in a rigid rotor supported by multi-row ball bearings. The waviness of a ball and each races is modeled by the superposition of sinusoidal function, and the position vectors of inner and outer groove radius center are defined with respect to the mass center of the rotor in order to consider five degrees of freedom of a general rotor-bearing system. The waviness of a ball bearing is introduced to these position vectors to use the Hertzian contact theory in order to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force resulting from the waviness while the rotor has translational and angular motion. They can be determined by solving the nonlinear equations of motion with five degrees of freedom by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm. Numerical results of this research are validated with those of prior researchers. The proposed model can calculate the translational displacement as well as the angular displacement of the rotor supported by the multi-row ball bearings with waviness. It also characterizes the nitration frequencies resulting from the various kinds of waviness in rolling elements, the harmonic frequencies resulting from the nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of ball bearing. and the sideband frequencies resulting from the waviness interaction.

  • Several factors which influence baseline instability (BLI) phenomenon in MR drive were investigated experimentally. In particular, the role of surface topography on BLI was studied in detail. The r esults show that BLI is linearly proportional to the surface waviness with a spatial wavelength of 0.4 to 5.0 min. BLI becomes worse as the surface waviness increases. On the other hand, surface roughness which has a spatial wavelength below 25 $\mu$ m has no effect on BLI. The results further show that the effect of bias current on the BLI is amplified on the disk with worse surface waviness. The disk surface waviness is dependent on the manufacturing process and becomes an inherent surface property of media. The disk surface waviness. therefore, can not be overlooked when evaluating the media for a high-performance hard disk drive. In general, waviness is reduced mainly during grinding and polishing process during manufacturing.

  • Recently, precision machining technology has been developed continuously in order to make high productivity and quality assurance of the precision parts of several industrial fields. Waviness may occur on the surface of the machined parts due to the table motion error and the dynamic cutting mechanism between the tool and the workpiece. The waviness may fall off the form accuracy of the precision machine parts. In the research, a micro cutting device with piezoelectric actuator has been developed to control precise depth of cut and compensate the waviness on the surface of the workpiece. Experiments have been carried out in the precision lathe. The characteristics of the surface profile and cause of the waviness profile have been analyzed and waviness profiles of some cause have been compared with those of experiments.

  • In this study, the numerical and experimental investigations were conducted to understand ultrasonic wave propagation and to evaluate the degree of fiber waviness in thick composites nondestructively. The path, energy and traveling time of insonified wave were predicted by adopting the ray and plane wave theories. In the analysis, the composites were assumed to have continuous fiber with sinusoidal waviness in a matrix and were modeled as stacks of infinitesimally short length off-axis elements with varying fiber orientation along the length direction. From the experiments on the specially fabricated thick composite specimens with various degrees of uniform fiber waviness, the energy distributions of received wave were obtain for the various positions of transmitter. It was observed that the energy of wave was converged to the adjacent peaks of fiber waviness. The location where maximum energy of wave was detected from the experiments showed good agreement with the location obtained from theoretical predictions. Finally, the test procedure was Proposed to evaluate fiber waviness in thick composites by considering the energy of wave and relative distance between transmitter and receiver.

  • A constitutive model was proposed to study the effects of fiber waviness on the elastic properties of unidirectional composite materials. The predictions showed that the degree of fiber waviness significantly affected the elastic properties of composite materials. A special fabrication technique was developed for thic composite materials with various fiber waviness ratios. Tensile, compressive and flexural tests were conducted to obtain the elastic properties of composite materials with fiber waviness experimentally. The experimental result were in good agreement with the predictions.

  • Mode II fracture toughness, $K_{IIC}$, of single-ply triaxially woven fabric (TWF) composite due to tow waviness and anisotropy effects were numerically and experimentally studied. The numerical wavy beam network model with anisotropic material description denoted as TWF anisotropic was first validated with experimental Mode II fracture toughness test employing the modified compact tensile shear specimen configuration. 2D planar Kagome and TWF isotropic models were additionally constructed for various relative densities, crack lengths, and cell size parameters for examining effects due to tow waviness and anisotropy. $K_{IIC}$ generally increased with relative density, the inverse of cell size, and crack length. It was found that both the waviness and anisotropy of tow inflict a drop in $K_{IIC}$ of TWF. These effects were more adverse due to the waviness of tow compared to anisotropy.

  • Fiber waviness is one of manufacturing defects encountered frequently in thick composite structures. It affects significantly on the behavior as well as strength of thick composites. Thick composites with fiber waviness have two kinds of nonliearity. One is material nonlinearity, and the other is geometrical nonliearity due to fiber waviness. There are only a few studies that have considered both material and geometrical nonlinearities. In this paper, a FEA model was proposed to predict nonlinear behavior and strength of thick composites with fiber waviness.
