  • Application of reduced web beam section (RWBS) as a sacrificial fuse element has become a popular research field in recent years. Weakening of beam web in these connections may cause local web buckling around the opening area which can affect cyclic behavior of connection including: maximum load carrying capacity, strength degradation rate, dissipated energy, rotation capacity, etc. In this research, effect of local web buckling on the cyclic behavior of RWBS connections is investigated using finite element modeling (FEM). For this purpose, a T-shaped moment connection which has been tested under cyclic loading by another author is used as the reference model. Fracture initiation in models is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is based on micro-void growth and coalescence. Included in the results are: effect of opening corner radii, opening dimensions, beam web thickness and opening reinforcement. Based on the results, local web buckling around the opening area plays a significant role on the cyclic behavior of connection and hence any parameter affecting the local web buckling will affect entire connection behavior.

  • Elastic-plastic shear buckling behaviors of the web-post in a Castellated Steel Beam (CSB) with hexagonal web openings under vertical shear force were investigated further using Finite Element Model (FEM) based on a sub-model, which took the upper part of the web-post under horizontal shear force to represent the whole web-post under vertical shear force. A simplified design method for the web-post elastic-plastic shear buckling strength was proposed based on simulation results of the sub-model. Proper boundary conditions were applied to the sub-model to assure that its behaviors were identical to those of the whole web-post. The equation to calculate the thin plate elastic shear buckling strength was adopted as the basic form to build the design equation for elastic-plastic buckling strength of the sub-model. Parameters that might affect the elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the whole web-post were studied. After obtaining the vertical shear buckling strength of a sub-model through FEM, the shear buckling coefficient k can be obtained through the back analysis. A practical calculation method for k was proposed through curving fitting the parameter study results. The elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the web-post calculated using the proposed shear buckling coefficient k agreed well with that obtained from the FEM and test results. And it was more precise than those obtained from EC3 based on the strut model.

  • The absence of an important portion of the web plate in steel beams with multiple circular perforations, cellular beams, causes the web plate to undergo distortions prior to and during lateral torsional buckling (LTB). The conventional LTB equations in the codes and literature underestimate the buckling moments of cellular beams due to web distortions. The present study is an attempt to develop analytical methods for estimating the elastic buckling moments of cellular beams. The proposed methods rely on the reductions in the torsional and warping rigidities of the beams due to web distortions and the reductions in the weak-axis bending and torsional rigidities due to the presence of web openings. To test the accuracy of the analytical estimates from proposed solutions, a total of 114 finite element analyses were conducted for six different standard IPEO sections and varying unbraced lengths within the elastic limits. These analyses clearly indicated that the LTB solutions in the AISC 360-16 and AS4100:2020 codes overestimate the buckling loads of cellular beams within elastic limits, particularly at shorter span lengths. The LDB solutions in the literature and the Eurocode 3 LTB solution, on the other hand, provided conservative buckling moment estimates along the entire range of elastic buckling.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze some parameters' effects on buckling behavior of Sinusoidal Corrugated Web using finite element analysis program. Studying buckling behavior is one of the most important things to design sinusoidal corrugated web girders and predict the shear performance. In this paper, Four parameters of Sinusoidal Corrugated Web, which are thickness($t_w$), height($h_w$), wave height(${\alpha}_3$) and wave length(w), were selected for buckling behavior analysis. Via buckling analysis, it is shown that $t_w$, $h_w$ and ${\alpha}_3$ have influence on shear buckling stress, Initial stiffness and reduced strength after buckling.

  • More than one longitudinal web stiffener may be economical in the design of plate girders that have considerably high width-to-thickness ratio of webs. In this study, the bend-buckling strength of relatively deep webs with two horizontal lines of flat plate-shaped single-sided stiffeners was numerically investigated. Linear eigenvalue buckling analyses were conducted for specially selected hypothetical models of stiffened web panels, in which top and bottom junctions of a web with flanges were assumed to have simply supported boundary conditions. Major parameters in the analyses were the locations of two longitudinal stiffeners, stress ratios in the web, slenderness ratios and aspect ratios of web panels. Based on the application of assumptions on the combined locations of the two longitudinal web stiffeners, simplified equations were proposed for the bend-buckling coefficients and compared to the case of one longitudinal stiffener. It was found that bend-buckling coefficients can be doubled by adopting two longitudinal stiffeners instead of one longitudinal stiffener. For practical design purposes, additional equations were proposed for the required bending rigidity of the longitudinal stiffeners arranged in two horizontal lines on a web.

  • Cellular and castellated steel beams are used to obtain higher stiffness and bending capacity using the same weight of steel. In addition, the beam openings may be used as a pass for different mechanical fixtures such as ducts and pipes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters on both elastic and inelastic critical buckling stresses of steel web plates with openings. These parameters are plate aspect ratio; opening shape (circular or rectangular); end distance to the first opening; opening spacing; opening size; plate slenderness ratio; steel grade; and initial web imperfection. The web/flange interaction has been simplified by web edge restraints representing simply supported boundary conditions. A numerical parametric study has been performed through linear and nonlinear finite element (FE) models, where the FE results have been verified against both experimental and numerical results in the literature. The web plates are subject to in-plane linearly varying compression with different loading patterns, ranging from uniform compression to pure bending. A buckling stress modification factor (${\beta}$-factor) has been introduced as a ratio of buckling stress of web plate with openings to buckling stress of the corresponding solid web plate. The variation of ${\beta}$-factor against the aforementioned parameters has been reported. Furthermore, the critical plate slenderness ratio separating elastic buckling and yielding has been identified and discussed for two steel grades of DIN-17100, namely: ST-37/2 and ST-52/3. The FE results revealed that the minimum ${\beta}$-factor is 0.9 for web plates under uniform compression and 0.7 for those under both compression and tension.

  • In desingin plate bridges, the width-thickness ratio of flanges and webs are proportioned in such that the premature local buckling of flanges and webs prior to achievement of the full strength of plate-girders must be prevented. It is the common practive in most design codes that the flange local buckling strength and the web bend buckling strength are separately computed. In most practical plate girders, however, the flange buckles simultaneously when web bend-buckling occurs, vice versa. The primary purpose of the present study is to investigate the phenomenon, which may be called flange-web interactive buckling. Using the eight-node shell element available in the commercial multi-purpose program ABAQUS, the phenomenon was quantitatively investigated. Also presented are the effects of various factors such as the ratio of flange slenderness ratio to the web slenderness ratio, the ratio of flange width to the web depth, and the longitudinal stiffeners. A series of comparative studies with various design codes show that the present study provides more accurate and effective design basis in proportioning the flanges and webs.

  • In this paper we deal with stability problems of any complex structure that can be modeled by beam and shell finite elements. We use for illustration the steel plate girders, which are used in bridge construction, and in industrial halls or building construction. Long spans, slender cross sections exposed to heavy loads, are all critical design points engineers must take into account. Knowing the critical load that will cause lateral torsional buckling of the girder, or load that can lead to web buckling, as an important scenario to consider in a design process. Many of such problem, including lateral torsional buckling with influence of lateral supports and their spacing on critical load can be solved by the proposed method. An illustrative study of web buckling also includes effects of position and spacing of transverse and longitudinal web stiffeners, where stiffeners can be modelled optionally using shell or frame elements.

  • A procedure for critical buckling moment of a tapered beam is proposed with the application of potential energy calculations using Ritz method. Respective solution allows to obtain critical moments initiating lateral buckling of the simply supported, modestly tapered steel I-beams. In particular, lateral-torsional buckling of beams with simultaneously tapered flanges and the web are considered. Detailed, numerical, parametric analyses are carried out. Typical engineering, uniformly distributed design loads are considered for three cases of the load, applied to the top flange, shear centre, as well as to the bottom flange. In addition simply supported beam under gradient moments is investigated. The parametric analysis of simultaneously tapered beam flanges and the web, demonstrates that tapering of flanges influences much more the critical moments than tapering of the web.

  • This paper presents theoretical and finite element analysis results for the lateral-torsional buckling of I-girders with corrugated web under uniform bending. Lateral-torsional buckling is a major design aspect for flexural members composed of thin-walled I-section. However, torsional rigidities such as the warping constants of the I-girders with corrugated web are not fully understood yet. In this paper, bending and pure torsional rigidities of I-girders with corrugated web are first described using the results of previous researchers. Then, the location of the shear center and the warping constants are derived. Using the derived section properties of I-girders with corrugated web, the lateral-torsional buckling strength is determined. Finite element analyses are conducted and the proposed lateral-torsional buckling strength of I-girders with corrugated web is successfully verified. Finally, the effects of corrugation profiles of the web on the lateral-torsional buckling load of I-girders with corrugated web are discussed.
