  • Design of a weld line in a tailor welded blank is indispensable for good manufacturing of stamped parts as assigned, since the intial weld line is distorted severely with forming. The initial weld line has to be determined such that desired weld line in a formed part can be obtained. The initial weld line was predicted by inverse finite element analysis from the desired weld line in a formed part. The inverse approach is applied to the cylindrical and square cup drawing with tailor welded blanks. The applications demonstrates that the approach is useful for design of weld line of tailor welded blank.

  • Weld line in injection molded part is one of the defect in injection molding process. Weld line deteriorates not only appearance quality but mechanical property. In this study weld line strength has been examined according to the injection operational conditions, materials and mold designs. PC and PP were used, and four different specimens were used in this experiment. Weld line strength decreased as injection temperature increases for PC. It was more dependent on mold temperature than injection temperature for PP Among the four different specimens, uneven thickness specimen showed the highest weld line strength.

  • Weld line is one of serious troubles which are observed in a plastic part manufactured by a injection molding process. This is caused by many process factors, which are molding pressure, temperature, velocity, location of a injection gate, mold geometry and material properties. investigation on the effects of these process factors to the appearance of a weld line was carried out using a finite element method. Filling and packing analyses were carried out by modifying both the configuration of the injection gates and cavity thickness. Proper locations of the injection gates could be determined by considering molding pressure, temperature, velocity and frozen layer, and whereby the weld line was controled. In order to make a weak appearance of the weld line, flow velocity and flow front in a cavity were also investigated by modifying a cavity thickness. As a result, flow front was extended around the corner in the cavity by changing the flow velocity and hence the appearance of the weld line was much weakened.

  • This study is for stabilizer, a parts of automotive suspension system, that would be changed to Plastic Material. The part is designed and analyze by PRO-E. The position of Weld Line is founded by the C-mold, computer software with FEM. Then a Mold is designed by consideration with locating Weld Line. Mechanical property tests, such as tensile test, compression test, ball pull-out test, fatigue test and durability test are done the part by SAE test spec. Most of all the result of the tests show over requirement result without the compression test.

  • Warpage and weld line are two major cosmetic defects in the injection molding process. These defects are very sensitive to uncontrollable parameters within the process. The optimization of the design variables can be treated with the use of robust designs. Therefore, in order to minimize the warpage and weld line, a special design method to diminish defects is required. In this study, a new robust design method using designer preference to achieve the optimal robust design conditions in the injection molding process is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown with an example of the part of warpage and weld line.

Weld line deteriorates not only appearance quality but also mechanical property. In this study, tensile strength about material such as ABS, PP, PA and PS was tested. as the results, the first result appears that weld's strength retention ratio's are 0.90, 0.84, 0.85, 0.76 and the second result apeears that weld depth decrease as processing temperature increased.

  • The welding automation in ship manufacturing process, especially in the sub-assembly line is considered to be a difficult job because the welding part is too huge, various, unstructured for a welding robot to weld fully automatically. The weld orocess at the sub-assembly line for ship manufacturing is to joint the various stiffener on the base panel. In order to realize automatic robot weld in sub-assembly line, robot have to equip with the sensing system to recognize the position of the parts. In this research,we developed a vision system to detect the position of base panle for sub-assembly line is shipbuilding process. The vision system is composed of one CCD camera attached on the base of robot, 2-500W halogen lamps for active illumination. In the image processing algorithm, the base panel is represented by two set of lines located at its two corner through hough transform. However, the various noise line caused by highlight, scratches and stiffener, roller in conveyor, and so on is contained in the captured image, this nosie can be eliminated by region segmentation and threshold in hough transform domain. The matching process to recognize the position of weld panel is executed by finding patterns in the Hough transformed domain. The sets of experiments performed in the sub-assembly line show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
