  • Heat transfer rate can be increased by increasing the heat transfer area. In this study, wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchangers with $P_t/P_l=1.03$ were tested and compared with louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l=0.6$. Results show that heat transfer capacities of wide louver samples are larger (9.8% at one row, 13.6% at two row and 4.1% at three row) than those of conventional louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 1.78, the increase of heat transfer capacity is rather small, possibly due to the smaller heat transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The j factor of the louver fin was 67% larger at one row, 42% larger at two row and 52% larger at three row. The f factor of the louver fin was 81% larger at one row, 63% larger at two row and 60% larger at three row. The effect of fin pitch on j and f factors are not pronounced and the j factor decreased as the number of tube row increased.

  • One method of increasing the heat-transfer rate is to increase the heat-transfer area. In this study, we test a wide louver fin-and-tube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 1.03, and we compare the results with those of a louver fin-andtube heat exchanger with $P_t/P_l$ = 0.6. The results obtained show that the heat-transfer capacities of the wide louver samples are larger (16% in one row, 29% in two rows, and 38% in three row samples) than those of the louver samples. Considering the area ratio of 2.17, the increase in the heat-transfer capacity is somewhat small. The reason for this may be due to the smaller heat-transfer coefficient and fin efficiency of the wide louver sample. The effect of the fin pitch on the j and f factors are not profounded. The j and f factors decreased as the number of tube rows increased. We compare the data obtained with existing correlations.

  • Experiment was performed to study the heat transfer characteristics in 27 kinds of 15 : 1 scale models of multi-louverred fin heat exchangers with a wide range of variables(R $e_{Lp}$ =100~1, 800, $L_p$/F$p$=0.3~0.9, $\theta$=20$^{\circ}$~40$^{\circ}$). Thermofoil heaters were used to heat the louver fins and the local average Nusselt number for each louver in the louver array was obtained at constant wall temperature conditions. Correlations are developed to predict the heat transfer characteristics and drag coefficients. Generally, the heat transfer characteristics in the multi-louvered fins is shown to be similar to those of the laminar heat transfer on a flat plate. As the Reynolds number, the louver pitch to fin pitch ratio$L_p$/F$p$and the louver angle($\theta$) increase respectively, the average Nusselt number increases, but the variation of average Nusselt number as a function of the louver angle is smaller than that as a function of the louver pitch to fin pitch ratio. In case of$L_p$/F$p$ <0.5, the average Nusselt number of the 3rd louver is especially lower than the others, it is expected that it is due to the flow structure such as a recirculation flow and a flow separation.

  • Experimental studies were performed to determine the characteristics of flow structure and pressure drop in 15 : 1 scale models of multi-louvered fin heat exchanger in a wide range of variables($L_P/F_P=0.5{\sim}1.23$, ${\theta}=27^{\circ}{\sim}37^{\circ}$, $Re_{LP}=50{\sim}2000$). Flow structure inside the louvered fin was analyzed by smoketube method and new correlations on flow efficiency and drag coefficient were suggested. The new definition for flow efficiency, which modifies the existing flow efficiency, can predict the flow efficiency in the range above mentioned and is represented as a function of Reynolds number, louver pitch to fin pitch ratio, louver angle at low Reynolds number. Drag coefficient which is defined here is a function of Reynolds number, louver pitch to fin pitch ratio, louver angle below critical Reynolds number, and can be represented by a function of louver pitch to fin pitch ratio only above the critical Reynolds number.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the performance characteristics for the micro-channel gascooler with various operating conditions. The performance of four kind of HX models were analyzed and optimized with the variation of refrigerant inlet temperature, air velocity, outdoor temperature. As a result, Model B showed the maximum capacity and high performance could be maintained for wide operating conditions. Beside, the micro-channel heat exchanger could be appled to $CO_2$ system appropriately because of a small pressure drop and high heat transfer rate.
