  • Test facilities for the wind turbine performance monitoring and mechanical load measurements are installed in Vestas 100 kW wind turbine in Wollyong test site, Jeju island. The monitoring system consists of Garrad-Hassan T-MON system, telemetry system for blade load measurement, various sensors such as anemometer, wind vane, strain gauge, power meter, and etc. The experimental procedure for the measurement of wind turbine loads, such as edgewise(lead-lag) bending moment, flapwise bending moment, and tower base bending moment, has been established. Strain gauges are on-site calibrated against load cell prior to monitoring the wind turbine loads. Using the established monitoring system, the wind turbine is remotely monitored. From the measured load data, the load analysis has been performed to obtain the load power spectral density and the fatigue load spectra of the wind turbine.

  • Wind turbine tower has a very important role in wind turbine system as one of the renewable energy that has been attracting attention worldwide recently. Due to the growth of wind power market, advance and development of offshore wind system and getting huger capacity is inevitable. As a result, the vibration is generated at wind turbine tower by receiving constantly dynamic loads such as wind load and wave load. Among these dynamic loads, the mechanical load caused by the rotation of the blade is able to make relatively periodic load to the wind turbine tower. So natural frequency of the wind turbine tower should be designed to avoid the rotation frequency of the rotor according to the design criteria to avoid resonance. Currently research of the wind turbine tower, the precise research does not be carried out because of simplifying the structure of the other upper and lower. In this study, the effect of blade modeling differences are to be analyzed in natural frequency of wind turbine tower.

  • An effective method to calculate aerodynamic loads and aeroelastic responses of large wind turbine tower-blade coupled structures in yaw condition is proposed. By a case study on a 5 MW large wind turbine, the finite element model of the wind turbine tower-blade coupled structure is established to obtain the modal information. The harmonic superposition method and modified blade-element momentum theory are used to calculate aerodynamic loads in yaw condition, in which the wind shear, tower shadow, tower-blade modal and aerodynamic interactions, and rotational effects are fully taken into account. The mode superposition method is used to calculate kinetic equation of wind turbine tower-blade coupled structure in time domain. The induced velocity and dynamic loads are updated through iterative loop, and the aeroelastic responses of large wind turbine tower-blade coupled system are then obtained. For completeness, the yaw effect and aeroelastic effect on aerodynamic loads and wind-induced responses are discussed in detail based on the calculating results.

  • The accurate wind speed information at the hub height of a wind turbine is very essential to the exact estimation of the wind turbine power performance testing. Several methods on the site calibration, which is a technique to estimate the wind speed at the wind turbine's hub height based on the measured wind data using a reference meteorological mast, are introduced. A site calibration result and the wind resource assessment for the Taekwanryung test site are presented using a one-month wind data from a reference meteorological mast and a temporal mast installed at the site of wind turbine. From this analysis, it turns out that the current location of the reference meteorological mast is wrongly determined, and the self-developed codes for the site calibration are working properly. Besides, an analysis on the uncertainty allocation for the wind speed correction using site calibration is performed.

  • New concept of wind energy conversion system is proposed to increase the energy density at a given working space. The quality of wind for wind power generation is depend on its direction and speed. However, the quality is not good on land because wind direction is changeable all the time and the speed as well. The most popularly operated wind turbine system is an axial-flow free turbine. But its conversion efficiency is less than 30% and even less than 20% considering the operating time. In this research, a cross-flow type wind turbine system is proposed with a convergent-divergent duct system to accelerate the low speed wind at the inlet of the wind turbine. Inlet guide vane is also introduced to the wind turbine system to have continuous power generation under the change of wind direction. In here, the availability of wind energy generation is evaluated with the change of the size of the inlet guide vane and the optimum geometry of the turbine impeller blade was found for the innovative wind power generation system.

  • Wind turbine noise become main environmental problem as wind energy have been installed all around. Noise from large wind turbine give annoyance to listener, moreover it increase loading to whole system by restricting blade tip speed. However accurate noise mechanism of wind turbine is not yet examined. This paper reviewed noise source and analysis theory. Broadband noise if main component of wind turbine noise and airfoil self noise is main noise source. These make acoustic analogy hard to apply for analysis. For this reason, experimental equation is method for wind turbine noise prediction up to now. Spectrum analysis shows that vortex shedding noise exists around $1k{\sim}2k$ Hz. This region is most sensitive frequency range to human. Thus it is necessary to reduce this noise source.

  • To maximize power generation and reduce the construction cost of a commercial utility-grade wind turbine, the size of the wind turbine should be large. The initial design of the 12 MW University of Ulsan(UOU) Floating Offshore Wind Turbine(FOWT) was carried out based on the 5 MW National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) offshore wind turbine model. The existing 5 MW NREL offshore wind turbines have been expanded to 12 MW UOU FOWT using the geometric law of similarity and then redesigned for each factor. The resonance of the tower is the most important dynamic responses of a wind turbine, and it should be designed by avoiding resonance due to cyclic load during turbine operations. The natural frequency of the tower needs to avoid being within the frequency range corresponding to the rotational speed of the blades, 1P, and the blade passing frequency, 3P. To avoid resonance, vibration can be reduced by modifying the stiffness or mass. The direct expansion of the 5 MW wind turbine support structure caused a resonance problem with the tower of the 12 MW FOWT and the tower length and diameter was adjusted to avoid a match of the first natural frequency and 3P excitation of the tower.

  • Recently, small vertical axis wind turbine attracts attention because of its clean, renewable and abundant energy resources to develop. Therefore, a cross-flow type wind turbine is proposed for small wind turbine development in this study because the turbine has relatively simple structure and high possibility of applying to small wind turbine. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the turbine‘s structural configuration on the performance and internal flow characteristics of the cross-flow turbine model using CFD analysis. The results show that guide nozzle should be adopted to improve the performance of the turbine. Optimization of the nozzle shape will be key-importance for the high performance of the turbine.

  • Wind farm which are composed with wind turbine generators can be a good alternatives to solve environmental problem and solutions to cope with energy crisis for using wind energy. Until now, these wind turbine generators have been being studied on the viewpoint of only active power control for reducing the burden of main grid. In this control scheme, we might demand a reactive power compensator in order to make reparation for the reactive power produced from wind turbine generator itself. Therefore, if the reactive power as well as active power of wind turbine generator were controlled according to the demand of reactive power, the installation of a additional reactive power compensator could be reduced. This paper presents the control method of a active and reactive power for wind turbine generators by means of SVPWM(Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation) inverting method and describes a operational coordination of wind turbine generators. The proposed power control algorithm can simply produce the output power of wind turbine generator needed in wind farm, which can reduce the power of main grid more and exclude a supplementary reactive power compensator. We assumed that wind farm are composed with two kinds of wind turbine generators, AC/DC/AC and induction generator types.
