In a power grid that has a high penetration of wind power, the highly-fluctuating output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) adversely impacts the power quality in terms of the system frequency. This paper proposes a power smoothing scheme of a variable-speed WTG that can smooth its fluctuating output power caused by varying wind speeds, thereby improving system frequency regulation. To achieve this, an additional loop relying on the frequency deviation that operates in association with the maximum power point tracking control loop, is proposed; its control gain is modified with the rotor speed. For a low rotor speed, to ensure the stable operation of a WTG, the gain is set to be proportional to the square of the rotor speed. For a high rotor speed, to improve the power smoothing capability, the control gain is set to be proportional to the cube of the rotor speed. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated under varying wind speeds for the IEEE 14-bus system using an EMTP-RV simulator. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can mitigate the output power fluctuation of WTGs caused by varying wind speeds by adjusting the control gain depending on the rotor speed, thereby supporting system frequency regulation.
The Weibull probability density function and the Rayleigh function are compared by analyzing the relations of the capacity factors which are compared the actual wind speed frequency curve with which are modelled using the probability density functions with different mean wind speeds. For this analysis, the wind speed means of arithmetic, root mean square, cubic mean cuberoot, and standard deviations are computed from the measured wind speed data of a specific site and the coefficients of probability density functions are calculated. The capacity factors for Vestas 850[kW] wind turbine are calculated and analyzed. The results shows that the wind speed frequency curve by Rayleigh function is more close to the actual curve than by Weibull function. The more the wind speed frequency curve is close to the actual one, the more the capacity factors become large values.
This paper presents the analysis of wind speeds data measured on top of three neighboring high-rise buildings close to a beach in Xiamen city, China, during Typhoon "Usagi" 2013. Wind tunnel simulation was carried out to validate the field measurement results. Turbulence intensity, turbulence integral scale, power spectrum and cross correlation of recorded wind speed were studied in details. The low frequency trend component of the typhoon speed was also discussed. The field measurement results show turbulence intensity has strong dependence to the wind speed, upwind terrain and even the relative location to the Typhoon center. The low frequency fluctuation could severely affect the characteristics of wind. Cross correlation of the measured wind speeds on different buildings also showed some dependence on the upwind terrain roughness. After typhoon made landfall, the spatial correlation of wind speeds became weak with the coherence attenuating quickly in frequency domain.
Non-stationarity and non-Gaussian property are two of the most important characteristics of wind. These two features are studied in this study based on wind speed records measured at different heights from a 325 m high meteorological tower during the synoptic wind storms. By using the time-frequency analysis tools, it is found that after removing the low frequency trend of the longitudinal wind, the retained fluctuating wind speeds remain to be asymmetrically non-Gaussian distributed. Results show that such non-Gaussianity is due to the weak-stationarity of the detrended fluctuating wind speed. The low frequency components of the fluctuating wind speeds mainly contribute to the non-zero skewness, while distribution of the high frequency component is found to have high kurtosis values. By further studying the decomposed wind speed, the mechanisms of the non-Gaussian distribution are examined from the phase, turbulence energy point of view.
In order to examine the variational features of Asian dust outbreak in recent years, observed WMO synop data were employed for the period from 1996 to 2007. We first divided Asian dust source regions into four subregions; 1) Taklamakan, 2) Gobi, 3) Inner Mongolia-Manchuria and 4) Loess, and the meteorogical variables such as wind speed, precipitation and threshold wind speed observed during the Asian dust outbreak period were compared with those during non-Asian dust period. The results showed that temporal variation of occurrence frequency of dust outbreak had a strong positive correlation with the frequency of strong wind speed and low precipitation in each of the 4 source regions. Spatial distributions of frequency of dust occurrence after 2002 showed increasing trend in Gobi and Inner Mongolia-Manchuria but decreasing trend in Loess region. This is showing a shift in main source region toward Northwest, especially since 2003.

For a power grid that has a high wind penetration level, when wind speeds are continuously fluctuating, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation of a variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT) causes the significant output power fluctuation of a VSWT, thereby significantly fluctuating the system frequency. In this paper, an improved power-smoothing scheme of a VSWT is presented that significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation caused by varying wind speeds. The proposed scheme employs an additional control loop based on the frequency deviation that operates in combination with the MPPT control loop. To improve the power-smoothing capability of a VSWT in the over-frequency section (OFS), the control gain of the additional loop, which is set to be inversely proportional to the rotor speed, is proposed. In contrast, the control gain in the under-frequency section is set to be proportional to the rotor speed to improve the power-smoothing capability while avoiding over-deceleration of the rotor speed of a VSWT. The proposed scheme significantly improves the performance of the power-smoothing capability in the OFS, thereby smoothing the frequency fluctuation. The results clearly demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly mitigates the frequency fluctuation by employing the different control gain for the OFS under various wind penetration scenarios.

In this paper an application of centralized pitch angle controller for fixed speed wind turbines based wind farm to mitigate load frequency fluctuation is presented. Reference signal for the pitch angle of each wind turbine is calculated by using proposed centralized control system based on wind speed information. The wind farm in the model system is connected to a multi machine power system which is composed of 4 synchronous generators and a load. Simulation analyses have been carried out to investigate the performance of the controller using real wind speed data. It is concluded that the load frequency of the system can be controlled smoothly.

To evaluate the incoming salt quantitatively which is the reason of salt attack is a very important aspect to calculate the durability life of the structure. Incoming salt is influenced by various weather changes during the transmission and consequently, the changes of incoming salt quantity occur. Therefore, the study to analyze incoming salt quantity was executed which are changed by the weather environments (occurrence frequency of wind direction / wind speed); study results showed that influences to the changes of incoming salt quantity are bigger than those of wind speed, compared with the frequencies.

Wide operating range and speed control is needed for wind power generating and a Doubly Fed Induction Generator(DFIG) has good adaptivity for that purpose. This paper deals with the speed and power control using the Grid connected DFIG in the super-synchronous speed regions, by controlling frequency and voltage fed to the rotor. Power flow of the DFIG and steady-state algebraic equations of the equivalent circuit are analyzed. For the speed control analysis, torque simulation is performed whereby the different slip between operating motor driving frequency and synchronous frequency of M-G system applied. To keep the output rating of the generator, the exciting frequency and voltage attenuation are applied.
Weather elements were observed by the AWS (Automatic Weather System) and dustfall particles were collected by the modified American dust jar (wide inlet bottle type) at 4 sampling sites in Busan area from March. 1999 to February, 2000. Thirteen chemical species (Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Si, and Zn) were analyzed by AAS and ICP. The purposes of this study were to estimate qualitatively various bulk deposition flux of dustfall and insoluble components by applying regional and seasonal wind intensity. Frequency of wind speed were found in order of low(1-3m/s), very low(<1m/s), medium(3-8m/s) and high(>8m/s), and annual mean had higher range at low(1-3m/s) for 56.3%. Strong negative linear correlation were observed between dustfall and wind direction (northeastern and eastern), but strong positive linear correlation were observed between dustfall and wind direction (western and northwestern) at industrial, commercial and coastal zone(p<0.05). While a negative correlation were observed between wind speed frequency of very low(<1 m/s) and dustfall, and positive correlation were observed between wind speed frequency of low(1-3m/s) and dustfall in coastal zone(p<0.05). The correlation coefficient was observed 0.556 between wind speed frequency of low(1-3m/s) and Ni by commercial zone(p<0.05). The correlation coeffcient show well-defined insoluble trace metals (Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) and wind speed frequency of low(1-3m/s) at coastal zone, which was found significant difference(p<0.01).
