  • Active-Standby Duplication Techniques are conventionally used for fault-tolerant systems. But in this paper we researched on the Active-Active Duplication Techniques for Fault-tolerant DNS System. Our Active-Active Duplication made the 1st DNS periodically copied to the 2nd DNS and maintained the same status by using Rsync and Crontab. Even though the 1st or the 2nd DNS stops due to some critical errors, the remaining DNS can take over and provide continuous services.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand what is ActiveX control and how to utilize it in developing dynamic web pages. For this purpose, some literature survey and experimental practices with PC were done to understand the differences among web programming technologies such as visual basic, java, XML web services. In order to scrutinize the functions of ActiveX controls and the comparison of their technology with currently introduced XML web service, a study on the history of Internet programming with a focused view on ActiveX control was also performed. With the knowledge of the fore mentioned, Actual design and building experiments of web pages using ActiveX control pad were implemented. The results show that Microsoft ActiveX controls, formerly known as OLE controls or OCX controls, developed to compete with java applet in internet battle fields, turn out to be useful in software reusability, cost-saving and time-saving etc. However, the use of ActiveX controls has been confined in window platform, Overall, this study was useful for understanding the usage of ActiveX controls in web pages.

  • Purpose The conventional solution methods for production scheduling problems typically focus on the active schedules, which result in short makespans. However, the active schedules are more difficult to generate than the semi active schedules. In other words, semi active schedule based search strategy may help to reduce the computational costs associated with production scheduling. In this context, this paper aims to compare the performances of active schedule based and semi active schedule based search methods for production scheduling problems. Design/methodology/approach Two decoding approaches, active schedule decoding and semi active schedule decoding, are introduced in this paper, and they are used to implement genetic algorithms for classical job shop scheduling problem. The permutation representation is adopted by the genetic algorithms, and the decoding approaches are used to obtain a feasible schedule from a sequence of given operations. Findings The semi active schedule based genetic algorithm requires slightly more iterations in order to find the optimal schedule, while its execution time is quite shorter than active schedule based genetic algorithm. Moreover, the operations of semi active schedule decoding is easy to understand and implement. Consequently, this paper concludes that semi active schedule based search methods also can be useful if effective search strategies are given.

  • Active networks allow active node’s functionality to be extended dynamically through the use of active extensions. This flexible architecture facilitates the deployment of new network protocols and services. However, the active nature of a network also raises serious safety and security concerns. These concerns must be addressed before active networks can be deployed. In this paper we look at how we can control active extension’s access to different active nodes. Specifically, the authentication between active nodes is very important in this case. We use unique identity each node has for transferring access policies between active nodes. In this paper, we suggest a new method of transferring access policies performing authentications using identities between active nodes.

  • The active network is a new networking approach to allow new protocols to be developed easily by solving the limitation of the existing protocol development procedure and the long protocol standardization process. So far many research institutes and universities have proposed active node architectures and active packet formats, but still there are some problems needed to be solved. One of them is the active packet format and the routing approach which consider the requirements of various active applications. Therefore, in this paper, we figure cut the requirements of various active applications and design four types of active packet formats that reflect these requirements and propose routing schemes appropriate for these characteristics. Also we propose an active node architecture which reflect these requirements.

  • Paging extensions for Mobile IP was proposed to avoid unnecessary registration signaling overhead of Mobile IP. In order to support the paging function in Mobile IP, the slates of a mobile node arc divided into active on, active off, idle. The active on state means when any incoming or outgoing data session arrives to a mobile node. After data session is completed, the state of the motile node is changed into active off from active on. At this moment, the active timer starts to be operated. If the active timer expires, the mobile node moves to idle state. If a mobile node has very frequently data sessions at the same cell, the mobile node is better to move slowly into idle state. The other way, if the mobile node very frequently moves into new cell area and receives or sends little data, the mobile node is better to move earlier into idle state. In this raper, the active timer is adaptively set by the mobile nodes traffic and mobility characteristics and the paging scheme using this active timer is proposed to reduce the location registration cost.

  • The active packets unlike traditional IP packets should be executed at each active node along their path. To execute the active program at each active node, the active packets for an active program should go through the same active nodes and all packets are delivered without any loss. This paper presents the new active engine for every active packet which execute an active program to be routed through the same intermediate active nodes and to be delivered reliably. Proposed active engine requires fewer changes to existing IP protocols and guarantees the reliable delivery of the active packets. Moreover, even if the sender does not have any information about the intermediate nodes every active packet is routed through the same intermediate active nodes. The simulation results show that proposed active engine achieves an efficient transmission with high data delivery and low communication overhead compared with the other existing transmission protocols.

  • In this paper we researched on the Duplication Techniques for Active-Active Web Servers. Rsync and crontab utilities make copy periodically between web servers and maintain the same status. Load Balancing Server makes web servers load balanced and fast servicing by executing web servers alternatively. Even though one web server stops due to some critical errors, the remaining web server can take over and provide services continuously.

  • In a previous study, the potential of damping suspension bridges with active stay cables has been evaluated on a numerical model of a suspension bridge, and demonstrated experimentally on a laboratory mockup. In this paper, we extend our study to explore two different configurations of the active stay-cables: one classical configuration, corresponding to attaching the active stay-cables between the top of the pylons and the deck (configuration I) and, another configuration, consisting of attaching the stay-cables between the base of the pylons and the catenary (configuration II). The analysis confirmed that both configurations are effective with a slight superiority of the second configuration. The study is conducted numerically and experimentally on a suspension bridge mock-up, by considering two types of active stay-cables. The experimental results confirmed the numerical predictions, and demonstrated the effectiveness of the second configuration.

  • In this paper, we propose the method to extract the anatomical objects in medical images using active contour models and genetic algorithms. The performance of active contour models is mostly decided by the optimization of active contour model's energy. So, we propose to use genetic algorithms to optimize the energy of active contour models. We experimented our proposed method on the femoral head medical images and proved that our method provides very acceptable results from any initialization of active contour models.
