  • New and innovative technologies for utilizing daylight in buildings have been developed for saving energies and improving visual environments. This study describes the most up-to date information available about the application and evaluation of advanced daylighting systems to enhance daylighting in non-residential buildings from IEA's Task 21. IEA's Task 21 consists on 4 subtasks such as "Performance Evaluation of Daylighting Systems(subtask A)", "Daylighting Responsive Controls(subtask B)", "Daylighting Design Tools(subtask C)" and "Case Studies(subtask D)". For the study, the configurations and characteristics of IEA's advanced daylighting systems are comparatively analyzed. As results, innovative daylighting systems are designed to redirect sunlight or skylight to areas which it is required without glare. These systems use optical devices that initiate reflection or refraction of sunlight and skylight. And they can be designed to actively track the sun or passively control the direction of sunlight and skylight. The comprehensive overview of innovative daylighting systems presented in this study helps designer to understand the advantages of daylighting in building and choose a suitable system for building in the earliest stage of the design process.

  • Innovative daylighting systems in buildings in various climatic zones around the world have been developed under the IEA SHC Task21. The performance assessment were obtained by monitoring the most systems using full-scale test model rooms or actual buildings under real sky conditions. This study aims to analyze the configuration and monitoring system of the nine Mock-up models of the IEA SHC Task21 comparatively. For the purpose, the geometry of the test rooms (length, width, height, window area, glazed area and occupied), reflectance of walls, floor and ceiling, transmittance of glazing (transmittance for hemispherical irradiation, normal irradiation and U-value) were compared. And equipment for measurement (manufacturer, range, calibration, maximum calibration error, cosine response error, fatigue error), and data acquisition system (manufacturer, type, number of differential analogue input channels, A/D converter resolution in bits, data acquisition software) were also analyzed comparatively. Some findings of these experimental methodology of standard monitoring have been proven to be a valuable one for future assessment of advanced daylighting systems in our country.

Specially, the lightself as a integrated daylighting system is one of the most important techniques due to it's durability, availability and lighting performance. This paper aims to analyze the development and architectural application of a lightself system to buildings as a integrated day lighting system. For the study, advanced lightself systems developed in abroad such as "Integrated Enveloped and Lighting System", "Anidolic Daylighting System" and etc. are analyzed. Also, the architectural examples are investigated. As results, the new technologies such as optically treated reflective and sun-tracking are adopted to improve daylight performance. And, lots of environmentally friendly buildings are installed on integrated lightself system.

  • As sustainable design technologies, advanced daylighting systems with lightshelves have been developed and are currently under monitoring the daylighting performance. This study aims to evaluate the comparative daylighting performance of sloped lightshelf and conventional glazing window with mock-up model, reconstructed as a prototype of Korean office building, sized $12.0m{\times}7.3m{\times}3.7m$ ($w{\times}d{\times}h$) and $1.8m{\times}4.8m$($w{\times}h$) for the south facing side-window was installed on the rooftop of engineering building, Kyung Hee University in Korea. It has an identical configuration of reference room and the test room. For the test room, the sloped type lightshelf system was designed as 10mm transparency sheet glass, tilt angle degree $29^{\circ}$, and total sized 1.28m (interior length 0.88m, exterior length 0.49m). It consisted of daylighting collector, entrance glazing and reflector. To assess daylighting performance, the totally 37 measuring points for illuminance and 2 view points of luminance were monitored in every 30 minutes from 12:00 to 15:00. For the detailed analysis, photometric sensors of each room were installed at work-plane (8 points), wall (7 points), ceiling (3points), and exterior horizontal illuminance (1 point). Luminance of window, rare of the room was measured under clear sky. It is to be monitored by Agilent data logger, photometric sensor Li-cor and the Radiant Imaging ProMetric 1400. Comparisons with a light factor, increase-decrease ratio, uniformity, and luminance are discussed.

  • One of the challenge for successful daylighting design might be to capture sunlighting that varies in both intensity and position and to deliver the luminous flux into the inner space as deep as possible. Conventional glazing apertures allow daylight in the outer 3.5m of a perimeter spaces. More advanced daylighting technologies can extend this daylighting depth by reflecting sunlight further from the windows within a deep floor area. For this purpose, this study developed light shelves based on performance evaluation with a mock-up model that constructed recently and measured under real sky condition. All these daylighting devices have a customized geometry developed from the solar path at a given latitude and utilize unique reflecting finishing to maximize the amount of redirection and diffusion of the daylight. This paper tells that the best daylighting penetration typically can be expected from using light-colored sloped external shelves.

  • To reduce costs and address other practical concern related to architectural lighting, we have been involved in various aspects of advanced daylighting design and control. If we look toward future building trends, we see that the advanced has already successfully deployed such complex lighting control systems. This paper takes a broad view of what advanced manufacturers have done to develop energy efficient lighting control technologies such as sensors, lumen maintenance, time of day scheduling, peak demand reduction and so forth. First of all strategies, daylighting controls would also need to be commissioned to respond to the specific daylighting signature of the zone. To translate the daylight in term of the amount of energy savings, an electric lighting system is designed and automatic on-off control system integrated with the contribution of daylighting has been applied to the operating of the artificial lighting. The lighting analysis program, Lumen-Micro predicts the optimal layout of conventional fluorescent and incandescent lighting fixtures to meet the designed lighting level and calculates unit power density, which translates the demanded amount of lighting energy.

  • Sunlighting offers the high quality of life and has potential to improve environment, economy and human comfort. Especially mirror sunlighting system has competitive power in price, saving energy and solving problems of sunshine lack. This study aims to analyze the adequate applications of mirror type sunlighting systems available in Korea to enhance the living environment. For the purpose, contemporary applications were analyzed by spatial characteristics, size and usage in Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Japan and Korea. As the results, they are being applied for the place with lack of sunshine in housings. For culture complex, they are usually applied for atrium. Nowadays, application of complex systems is increasing to solve sunshine lack and make uniform illuminance. Therefore both aesthetic and technical consideration is needed to apply the advanced mirror sunlighting systems in various spaces.

  • Use of daylight in underground space interacts with physiological need for human beings and provides relief from feeling secluded. Light pipe system can deliver natural light into the space where it is needed and can be used as primary or a secondary light source with benefits of energy, productivity and health. To use light pipe system effectively under various conditions, it is important to investigate the effectiveness of light pipe system with reliable monitoring protocol. This paper presents the results of light pipe system performance used in underground parking lot under different sky conditions. Comparisons were made between the illuminance standards of underground parking lot and the monitored data. The results indicated that adequate illuminance level was shown until 4.5m distance from the light pipe under clear sky condition. However, additional lighting device showed be used under overcast sky to meet the proper illuminance level.
