An Analysis of Discourses on Interpreting and Applying the Principle of Provenance in Archival Organization (기록관리 원칙의 해석과 적용에 관한 담론 분석 출처주의를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to logically investigate the changing interpretation and implementation of the principle of provenance by using an argument model for discourse analysis. First, it divides the history of discourses on the principle from the Dutch Manual publication of 1989 up to the present into four areas, which includes establishing, diffusing, transforming, and expanding or deconstructing, and articulates the core discourses of each. Second, it designs the argument model for analyzing the discourses on the principle by applying Toulmin's argument model and Dunn's policy argument model. Third, it selects the articles and books that cover the core discourses of the principle, and analyzes their contents in consideration of the argument model. Fourth and finally, it presents four argument models corresponding to each area of the discourses.

  • In this study, we designed and implemented a instruction emphasizing mathematical argument for fifth-grade students and analyzed the teaching practices. Through a literature review related to instruction emphasizing mathematical argument, we organized a teaching model of five phases that explain why the general claim that the sum of consecutive odd numbers equals a square number is true: 1) noticing patterns, 2) articulating conjectures, 3) representing through visual model, 4) arguing based on representation, 5) comparing and contrasting. Then, we analyzed the argumentation stream by phases to observe how the instruction emphasizing mathematical argument is implemented in the elementary classroom. Based on the results of this study, we discuss the implications of teaching a mathematical argument in elementary school.

  • In this paper we provide a teaching learning method for logic in debate, in particular, in debate of engineers. First we criticize the concept of argument and the Toulmin model on argument used in education for debate. We next provide a general method for learning arguments needed in debate. Finally, we suggest the hypothetico-inferential method and the model for inference to the best choice as argument methods coming in useful in debate education for engineers.

The Impact of the Argument-based Modeling Strategy using Scientific Writing implemented in Middle School Science (중학교 과학수업에 적용한 글쓰기를 활용한 논의-기반 모델링 전략의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of argument-based modeling strategy using scientific writing on student's modeling ability. For this study, 66 students (three classes) from the 7th grade were selected and of these, 43 students (two classes) were assigned to two experimental groups while the other 23 students (one class) were assigned to comparative group. In the experimental groups, one group (22 students) was Argument-based multimodal Representation and Modeling (AbRM), and the other group (21 students) was Argument-based Modeling (AbM). Modeling ability consisted of identifying the problem, structuring of scientific concepts, adequacy of claim and evidence and index of multimodal representation. As for the modeling ability, AbRM group scored significantly higher than the other groups, AbM group was significantly higher than comparative group. The four sub-elements of modeling ability in the AbRM group was significantly higher than the other groups statistically and AbM group scored significantly higher than comparative group. From these results, the argument-based modeling strategy using scientific writing was effective on students' modeling ability. Students organized or expressed the model and evaluated or modified it through the process of argument-based modeling using scientific writing and the exchange of opinions with others by scientific language as argument and writing.

  • This essay criticizes Van Fraassen's argument for empirical equivalence among competing theories, which is based on his interpretation of Newtonian space-time. I argue that his misleading interpretation of the ontology of absolute space-time results in his ineffective attacks against a residual structure of space-time, absolute velocity. Van Fraassen's argument basically misleads us into empirical equivalence in that his literal reading of Newtonian space-time disregards a variety of aspects of its model.

  • This study aimed to examine preservice science teachers' modeling ability and how it has changed in argument-based chemistry laboratory investigations. The participants for this study were twenty-one freshman students from teachers’ college and they carried out six topics of argument-based chemistry laboratory investigation. Students’ written modeling samples were collected and analyzed to investigate preservice science teacher's modeling ability and changes in it. The results of this study showed that preservice science teacher's modeling ability has improved and progressed through argument-based chemistry laboratory investigations.

A Two-Phase Shallow Semantic Parsing System Using Clause Boundary Information and Tree Distance (절 경계와 트리 거리를 사용한 2단계 부분 의미 분석 시스템)

  • In this paper, we present a two-phase shallow semantic parsing method based on a maximum entropy model. The first phase is to recognize semantic arguments, i.e., argument identification. The second phase is to assign appropriate semantic roles to the recognized arguments, i.e., argument classification. Here, the performance of the first phase is crucial for the success of the entire system, because the second phase is performed on the regions recognized at the identification stage. In order to improve performances of the argument identification, we incorporate syntactic knowledge into its pre-processing step. More precisely, boundaries of the immediate clause and the upper clauses of a predicate obtained from clause identification are utilized for reducing the search space. Further, the distance on parse trees from the parent node of a predicate to the parent node of a parse constituent is exploited. Experimental results show that incorporation of syntactic knowledge and the separation of argument identification from the entire procedure enhance performances of the shallow semantic parsing system.

  • This paper proposes a model for recognizing sentential paraphrases through Predicate-Argument Tuple (PAT)-based approximate alignment between two texts. We cast the paraphrase recognition problem as a binary classification by defining and applying various alignment features which could effectively express the semantic relatedness between two sentences. Experiment confirmed the potential of our approach and error analysis revealed various paraphrase patterns not being solved by our system, which can help us devise methods for further performance improvement.

A Conceptual Two-Layer Model of Thermohaline Circulation in a Pie-Shaped $\beta$-Plane Basin

  • The three dimensional structure of thermohaline circulation in a D-plane is investigated using a conceptual two layer model and a scaling argument. In this simple model, the water mass formation region is excluded. The upper layer represents the oceans above the main thermocline. The lower layer represents the deep ocean below the thermocline and is much thicker than the upper layer. In each layer, geostrophy and the linear vorticity balance are assumed. The cross interfacial velocity that compensates for the deep water mass formation balances downward heat diffusion from the top. From the above relations, we can determine the thickness of the upper layer, which is the same as thermocline depth. The results we get is basically the same as that we get for an f-plane ocean or the classical thermocline theory. Mass budget using the velocity scales from the scaling argument shows that western boundary and interior transports are much larger than the net meridional transport. Therefore in the thermohaline circulation, horizontal circulation is much stronger than the vertical circulation occuring on a meridional plane.
