  • Teacher's competence in student assessment can be developed by the successive experiences that they choose assessment methods, develop assessment instrument, administer the assessment, score and grade students' responses, analyze, interpret, use, and communicate assessment results, and reflect the whole assessment processes. In this study I educated pre-service teachers in order for them to improve their assessment competence. Mathematics pre-service teachers practiced and reflected the assessment processes. In the aspects of reflections, I analyzed their journals about the knowledge of assessment, the dual situation as a student and a teacher, and their assessment practices. These areas are proved to interact each other, contribute pre-service teachers' assessment competence and construct the elements of assessment competence. And I identified the development of pre-service teachers' assessment competence quantitatively by the teacher's assessment competence test.

  • In this study, we verify the relationship, which is presented by ISO/IEC 15504, between the assessor's competence and the efficiency of assessment. The ISO standard has been developed by many formal trial experiences for the software process assessment. The software process assessment determines the process capability, and makes the software process improvement possible in the development cycle. In the field assessment, third-party and team-based assessments are generally recommended. Therefore assessors' competences are essential to achieve the effectiveness and the efficiency of assessment. Survey data are collected from the third-party process assessment of a real IT industry, and the analysis is done by a causal modelling technique - PLS. Some findings are as follows. Depending on assessors' SE experiences, effects of the assessor's competence are existed, and their standard knowledge and assessment skill are effected each other. And the efficiency of assessment depends on the assessor's competence. In addition, the power analysis is presented and future research is suggested, because of many limitations of this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the assessment expertise of Mathematics' teachers, focusing on the competence in designing assessment item development. In this present research, I analysed how the teachers' competence appears in designing assessment items development when they generated problems the given problem into a new one. To examine this assumption, the following research questions were posed and investigated in the present study : How do Pre-service and In-service Teachers in primary schools develop the assessment item when generating problems the given problems into new problems? The result from the case study of metamorphosing the given problem into a new problem teachers used similar patterns switching numbers or changing units in order to develop new problems. Also, teachers in primary schools tend to develop problems as commonly as in the mathematics workbooks. In-service teachers tend to have better skills developing assessment items, but there were quite much of variability between individuals.

  • To evaluate students properly in mathematics, it is essential to clarify and specify the object of study. Proper assessment tools are also needed coupled with an effective assessment method. The assessment tools have to be reasonable and trustworthy. Conducting the assessment should always produce fair and positive results and effectiveness. Establishing standards for the student evaluation competence of mathematics teachers should satisfy such objectives. Referring to the previous study suggested by Korea Institute' of Curriculum & Evaluation(KICE), this study classified the elements of capacity for evaluation competence into the general assessment, the assessment content understanding, and the assessment conduct & application areas. The specific elements of each area are established as standards. At last, 13 standards were suggested and summarized. to describe the math teachers' student evaluation competence.

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the effect of direct practice of newborn health assessment on nursing student's clinical competence and self-efficacy and to propose effective strategies for clinical education on newborn care. Methods: Design was a nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental study. The direct practice program was composed of a lecture, demonstration, drill and feedback using a manikin, and repeated direct practice regarding newborn health assessment. Participants were 65 student nurses taking the pediatric nursing practicum in the nursery room at M hospital. The experimental group (n=33) participated in the direct practice program for newborn health assessment and the control group (n=32) received the traditional practice method. Nursing clinical competence was assessed by two nurse investigators and structured questionnaires were used to measure self-efficacy. Results: The experimental group's clinical competence was significantly higher than that of the control group (t=-4.82, p=.000). However no significant difference was found between the two groups for self-efficacy (t=1.264, p=.211). Conclusion: These findings indicate that the direct practice program is effective in improving nursing student's clinical competence, but it was not effective in increasing self-efficacy. Direct practice in various clinical education settings is recommended and longitudinal effects be evaluated.

  • Dental education is gradually transitioning to competency-based education system, which aims to help dentists achieve certain core competencies by means of various systems, such as curriculum accreditation. This study examined satisfaction with dental school education and the differences in the perceived importance and self-assessment of competencies among general dentists, in an attempt to propose a desirable direction for dental education. A questionnaire was administered to new general dentists who graduated from a dental school within the past 10 years. The results of the survey were analyzed using the Importance-Performance Analysis to understand differences in dentists' perceptions. Overall satisfaction with education was low in terms of the curriculum's relevance to actual practice and its capacity for cultivating required competencies. Furthermore, many of the respondents strongly perceived the need to improve dental education. Additional investigations into the satisfaction with education showed no difference. Among the seven key competency domains, dentists perceived Health Promotion to be important and also assessed themselves as having high competence. However, regarding the perceived importance of the remaining domains, self-assessment of competence was low for Professionalism, Communication & Interpersonal Skills, Knowledge Base, Information Handling & Critical Thinking, Clinical Information Gathering, Diagnosis & Treatment Planning, and Establishment & Maintenance of Oral Health. The results of this study suggest that a competency-based education model should be developed and incorporated into dental education to set performance standards and to promote systematic self-assessment in order to foster the development of competence in dental students.
