  • Lightweight multi-layered boards with high stiffness for the automotive interior trims were developed, which were composed of a single material. The boards were constructed in the form of substrate/core/substrate with newly developed materials. The materials which have high tensile strength and elongation were selected for the substrate materials, and those which have high compressive strength and low density were selected for the core materials. 25 types of multi-layered boards were fabricated using the selected substrate and core materials. The compatibility with the skin materials, the formability and the tensile strength and flexural strength of the specimens were evaluated. The results show that three types of multi-layered boards(Kenboard/EPP foam/Kenboard, Twintex/PP honeycomb/Twintex, Curv sheet/EPP foam/Curv sheet) are appropriate for the automotive interior trims. Considering the ease of materials supply and the economical aspect, Kenboard/EPP foam/Kenboard is thought to be the most realistic alternative.

  • The study aims to evaluate changes in textiles for automotive interior and suggest directions that the textile-development should take in order to achieve sustainability, and enter a circular economy system in the future. The main content and results of the study are as follows: First, we cover the overall sustainability study in the fashion and textile fields; in particular, the certification system is well established through the provision of information on the whereabouts of products to consumers and verification by external environmental auditors. Second, we considered the criteria of C2C in order to derive the necessary criteria for sustainability certification in the field of textiles. Third, we looked at the latest development trends of textile materials for automobile interiors which were divided into three categories: natural originated materials, circular economic consideration materials, and functional supplementary lightweight materials. In addition, we identified to what extent the trend of changes aggregated in the examples was satisfied and what was lacking when applied to the Basic criterion of C2C. As such, this study links and applies the sustainability criteria pursued in the fashion and textile fields to the textile for automotive interior materials, suggesting a direction for the textile field for automotive internal materials in the future. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that studies on textiles for automotive interior considering the net economy will continue, and practical development in the industry will be realized.

  • Today's consumers are looking for emotional design which can fulfill their own potential desire. Emotion varies according to individual circumstance, age, sex, culture, education, profession and so on. Automotive instrument panel design is the most important part of interior design, because it affects the impression of interior design and has the equipments for safety, entertainment and various information. Thus, this study was performed to apply emotional design to automotive instrument panel which is the most important part of automotive interior, and find the best bonding conditions to build instrument panel efficiently by comparing mechanical properties in thermoplastic resin of polyethylene (PE) adhesion. Satisfactory adhesion was executed in ultrasonic welding for the same materials of PE. The best welding conditions were found to be welding time of I second, welding pressure of 250 kPA for PE-PE welding. Dissimilar materials were adhered when adhesion and ultrasonic welding were performed at the same time.

  • Five parts of the automotive interior materials were sampled to determine their combustion characteristics. Oxygen Indexer, Smoke chamber, Differential Scanning Calorimeter(DSC) were used as the analysis apparatus. All LOI values of samples appear less than 21. The combustion phenomena of the interior materials primarily depends on properties of each layer material. The amount of generated smoke are reached the maximum value within 30 - 90sec after ignition. The experimental results of combustion characteristics and DSC of H/Line also indicated that the layer of foam was melt first and it caused the propagation of flame through the sample. The combustion characteristics of multi-layer materials primarily depends on thermal characteristics of single layer material.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze emitted components and concentrations of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) from the inside of vehicles that were experimented with sedans and RVs (Recreational Vehicles) delivered from warehouses after 15, 30, 45 and 60 days. The value of TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) was twice to eight times over than the standard value. However, TVOC of vehicles was more detected than RVs. Especially, the value of toluene was rapidly decreased after 45 days. But after 60 days, it was more detected than the standard value. After 45 days, the xylene value was confirmed to be lower than the standard value. As a result, it was found that development of alternative technologies such as non-solvent and systems for automobile interior parts may be imminent. Using test method standard, although it is not yet International Standard, to analyze and replace components, concentrations, human-noxious, it will contribute to producing environmental-friendly vehicles.

  • The light-weight of the research and development materials is actively carried out by overseas automobile companies and technology development continues in Korea. For the sake of fuel efficiency, the development of lightweight technology by improving the manufacturing method has been very effective. Recently, to maximize the effects of light weight, automotive interior parts have been applied by the micro-cellular injection molding using supercritical fluids and we call the Mucell manufacturing. This technique causes a problem in the quality of the surface of the products, because the shooting cells are revealed as the surface layer of the products by forming micro cells at the center of the products during injection molding. To overcome these phenomenon, we increased the temperature of injection molding using joule heating until critical value. In this study, we have predicted the problem of Mucell injection molding through the finite element analysis as changed the temperature by joule heating. From the result of finite element analysis, we have determined the optimized process and made the injection mold included electric current heating system with Mucell manufacturing analyzed the surface characteristics of the injection product according to changing mold temperature.

  • In this work, the effect of field-degradation of automotive polymeric interior parts on the squeak characteristics was studied for a number of used vehicles with various mileages and years of service. The purpose of this study was to characterize the squeak noise related with long-term degradation in service life. The characteristics of field-degraded polymeric samples are analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Complicated carbonyl spectra from FT-IR were deconvoluted into various carbonyls to trace field-degradation phenomenon. In addition, various mechanical tests, i.e. tensile test, hardness test as well as coefficient of friction test, were performed to analyze the variation in mechanical properties due to field-degradation. Squeak noise was measured and analyzed by frequency analysis. It was shown that the changes in the chemical structures of polymer due to field-degradation influenced the variation in mechanical properties, and squeak noise may worsen by increasing the squeak noise level in the wide frequency range. The results indicated that customer complaints regarding the squeak noise coming from used vehicles might be one of the important reliability issues because the increase in sound pressure level especially in the high frequency range could annoy drivers and passengers.
