  • The purpose of this study is to describe some common upland cropping system in Youngnam and Honam region and to analyze it's income by the system. The main results are as follows; First, there are common cropping systems consisting of "sweet potato+barely", "corn+barely" and "bean+barely". Second, the highest earning system in Youngnam region is a "sweet potato+barely" (934,544won/10a) and that in Honam region is a "sweet potato+barely"(1,210,523won/10a) respectively. Third, in the differences of the cropping system's income level between Youngnam and Honam region, the former is higher than the latter in "corn+barely" and "bean+barely" respectively.

  • Barely yellow mosaic(BaYMV) and barely mild mosaic (BaMMV) bymoviruses are both transmitted by the soil-inhabiting fungus Polymyxa gramnis, and are responsible for economic losses in barley crops in Asia and Europe. Because chemical control of the vector is ineffective, the losses can only be prevented by growing resistant barley cultivars. The objective of this study is to produce resistant barley plants by transformation with viral coat protein(cp) genes. Resistance tests of T1 plants transformed with the BaYMV CP gene showed that at least four independent lines had clear resistance to BaYMV but two other lines were highly susceptible with severe symptoms. The CP gene was detected in all resistant T1 plants by genomic PCR. Most of T2 progenies derived from the resistant T1 lines also showed resistance. In contrast, only one out of 21 independent T2 lines transformed with the BAMMV CP gene tested showed clear resistance to BaMMV, and others were very susceptible. Further analyses of resistance and CP gene expression are in progress.

  • This study aims to detecting and analyzing the defects of damaged carbon fiber reinforced composites after impacts, particularly focusing on barely visible impact damages. The impact test was progressed by a drop-weight machine and applied to introduce simulated damages on laminated composites used in aircrafts. Various nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques were applied to identify the defects on the specimens with different levels of impact energies. Based on the measurements data, the levels of the barely visible impacts, and the applicability and effectiveness of the detection methods were discussed. Generally, the results demonstrated that their inner damages contained bigger footprints than those on the surfaces. However, when the damage energy was low, it was found that the inner damage size could be smaller than those appeared on the surfaces.

  • Cereal grains are rich in phenolic compounds that give beneficial effect in human health. Although several research works have been reported on the effects of phytochemicals of plant origin, such as fruits, vegetables, few studies have examined the antioxidative effects of whole cereal grains. The objective of this study was to determine total antioxidant capacity of 80% ethanolic extracts of cereal grains by testing the ability of the extracts to inhibit UV -induced lipid peroxidation in vitro using linoleic acid in comparison to well-known antioxidant such as ascorbic acid and tannic acid. The total phenolic content of the cereal grain (80% ethanolic extracts) investigated in this study varied from 2.1 mg/g (wheat cv. Olgeurumil) to 10.4 mg/g (barely cv. Seodunchalbori). Highly positive relationship between total phenol compounds and antioxidant activity was found. When the antioxidant activities of all investigated extracts were measured with application of same quantity of phenol compounds, oat grain extracts showed similar antioxidant activity of barely cultivars. However, barely extract appeared as the most potent antioxidant activity of inhibition of UV -induced lipid peroxidation. This indicated that factors such as phenolic compound composition and their individual antioxidant activity could playa crucial role in the total antioxidant activity of cereal grains.

  • Quality characteristics of yogurt with added colored barely flour was investigated during fermentation by lactic acid bacteria. Chemical properties such as moisture, crude protein, starch, ash and ${\beta}$-glucan contents was measured. pH, acidity, brix, Hunter color value and growth of lactic acid bacteria in yogurt was investigated during fermentation by L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, and S. thermophilus mixed culture. Crude protein contents of Daeanchal and Boseokchal was 16.16 and 12.17%, respectively. Starch contents of daeanchal were shown lower score. The pH of yogurt by addition of barley flour (Daeanchal) addition 0 and 20% were 6.66 and 6.40, respectively. The pH of yogurt supplemented with barley flour tended to be lower than before control which was not added barely flours and oligosaccharide in yogurt. Titratable acidity of yogurt added barley flour was higher compared with that of control. Brix of yogurt was decreased during fermentation by lactic acid bacteria. Lightness of yogurt added barley flour (Daeanchal) addition 0 and 20% were 83.25 and 69.83, respectively. The original microbial population of the yogurt during 0, 5, 8, and 15 hr fermentation were 7.48, 7.79, 8.15, and 8.71 Log CFU/g, respectively. Moreover, the addition of colored barley flour was to promote the proliferation of lactic acid bacteria in yogurt. In our research, addition of colored barley flours added into the yogurt may also have contributed to growth of lactic acid bacteria.

  • The physicochemical properties and cooking qualities of six cultivars of covered barley, four malting barley and six naked barley were investigated. The 1, 000 kernel weight was heavier in the malting barley and ash content was the highest in covered barley. The varietal variation of amylose content was 17.7 to 20.2%. $\beta$-Glucan viscosity was generally lower in the malting barely, and varied greatly among barley cutivars with 2.16 to 8.47 cSt. The pearling rate was highest in naked barley with a mean of 75.5% and protein content of aw and pearled barely was significantly different with cultivars. In the cultivars tested, Doosan 8, Youngsan and Iri 5 showed the higher milling rate. Amylose patterns showed that the covered barley cultivars has lower gelatinization temperature and higher peak height and height at 50 $^{\circ}C$ than the malting and naked barley. The water absorptions were highest in covered barley cultivars , and lowest in naked barley cultivars. The soluble solid was highest in naked barley cultivars.

  • Effect of arsenite, arsenate and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) on the growth of seedling plants were investigated in order to compare the toxicity of arsenic species in soil environments. Test plants were mung bean (Phaseolus radiatus), wheat (Triticum aestivum), barely (Hordeum vulgare), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). Seedling growth in As-contaminated soil were significantly reduced in all test species. Arsenite was more toxic than arsenate and DMA. Among the test plants, mung bean was most sensitive to arsenic, followed by cucumber, wheat, and barely.

  • For more accurate height/depth control of the agricultural implements , the soil surface as a reference position should be measured as accurate as possible. A new measurement system using microwave was developed to detect the true soil surface even under plant and/or vegetation. Two-frequency continuous-wave radar was used as the measurement system. It could estimate the distance to the target by measuring the phase difference between two different frequencies continuous-waves which reflected on the target surface. The system performance was evaluated on the barely field where the average height of barley was 91.5 cm. The experimental results showed that the system performance was not affected by the existence of barely. The maximum measurement errors were 8.91 com and 8.44cm for two different experimental plots.
