  • Analytical model of beat response is derived on a slightly asymmetric ring and is veryfied by experiment. The asymmetric ring is a simplified model used to explain the beat property of a Korean bell. The asymmetric ring has mode pair having slight frequency difference in each radial mode. Each mode pair produces beat phenomenon by the interaction of the two close frequency components. Based on the analytical model, beat maps are first proposed and characteristics of beat on the circumference are detaily explained.

  • The system performance of 2-Dimensional wavelength hopping/time spreading optical CDMA systems is found to be limited by the occurrence of the beat noise between the components of the signal and the multiple user interference. This paper shows that the performance is analyzed under the beat noise and no beat noise to blow impact of the beat noise. To overcome this problem, the OHL(Optical Hard-Limiter) is used in the receiver. The performance is calculated for a optical CDMA system employing asymmetric and symmetric prime-hop 2-Dimensional codes, respectively The analysis results show that the performance improved 3.5 times of simultaneous users of before and after inserting OHL in the case of no beat noise. In the case of beat noise the performance improved 1.5 times of simultaneous users of before and after inserting OHL. The performance marked use of symmetric prime-hop code.

  • This paper presents performance improvement in optical CDMA system under the presence of beat noise using a cancellation technique. Optical fibers and atmospheric optical communications have been proposed the connection between base stations and central station. The optical signal beat noise is due to interference between lightwave, many optical waves are simultaneously incident on each receiver photodiode. Since the photodiode acts as a square-law detector, beat noise can occur in the receiver. While A two-stage cancellation technique is analyzed and verified via simulation employed here because of its system simplicity. By using the random ingredients of all user signals are estimated, the beat noise is rebuilt and removed from the intended signal. In addition to cancellation technique cancel the inherent multiuser interference (MUI) in CDMA system and nonlinear distortion (NLD) in optical system. It is performed at the receiver of the central station where the random ingredients of all user signals are estimated and the MUI and the NLD are rebuilt and removed from the received signal. The validity of the cancellation technique is theoretically analyzed and shown by numerical results. The increasing of capacity in two stage cancellation are obtained.

  • Beat map shows the distribution property of the beating sound in the bell structure. Using the beat map, beat control and beat estimation are available. To draw the beat map, mode pair parameters of the bell are required. However, in case of large bell which is struck by a heavy wooden hammer, it is very difficult to measure the excitation force and to obtain the mode pair parameters. In this paper, we determined the mode pair parameters of the bell from the transmissibility between the roving signal and reference signal, using ODS(operational deflection shape) method. The mode pair data are input to the theoretical model of the beat response and beating waves are generated on the bell circumference. All the numerical and beat map drawing procedures are automatized using Matlab. Finally, the reliability of the beat map generated by the program is verified.

  • The beat distribution property of the King Seong-deok Divine Bell is investigated by experiment and analysis. The beat map method is proposed to explain the beat distribution property on the circumference of the bell. For the analytical investigation, an analytical model of the vibration beat is derived on a slightly asymmetric shell of revolution by using the modal expansion method. In the analytical method, the beat map can be drawn only if the modal parameters of the bell are obtained. The analytical beat model is applied to draw the beat map of the King Seong-deok Divine Bell. The validity of the analytical method is verified by comparing the analytical beat maps with the experimental results. This paper proposes a visualization method of the beat and theoretically identifies the reason why the clear and unclear beats repeat periodically along the circumference of the bell and how the striking position influences the beat distribution property.

  • In this study, we propose a new method to control both the beat clarity and beat period in a ring structure. An equivalent ring which satisfies the measured mode condition is determined by using the equivalent ring theory. Theoretical analysis and finite element analysis on the equivalent ring are performed to investigate the effect of the local structural modification on the beat clarity and beat period. Beat clarity and period are improved by attaching asymmetric mass or decreasing local thickness. Through the analysis on the equivalent ring, the proper position and the amount of the local variation are determined to satisfy the required clarity and period condition. All the analysis results are compared and verified by the experiment.

  • As an unique acoustic characteristic of a Korean bell. beat phenomenon is a periodic repetition of strong and weak sounds. Beat sounds good when it is clear and it has a proper period, however, it is not easy to satisfy these two conditions simultaneously. In this study, we propose a beat tuning method to satisfy these two conditions, by using an equivalent bell model. First, we construct an equivalent bell which has the same beat property with the 1st beat of a real bell and we investigate the change of mode pair by finite element analysis, when thickness of the bell is locally decreased at $22.5^{\circ}$ from the striking point. From the analysis result, minimum thickness reduction amount is determined to make a clear and strong beat.

  • Vibration beat phenomenon is theoretically investigated on a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell, which is a simplified model of Korean bell. Mode pairs of the slightly asymmetric shell are obtained by receptance analysis and impulse response of the shell is derived using modal expansion and Laplace transform. Based on the impulse response model, beat mapping method is proposed to explain the reason that the beat of a bell vibration shows periodic distribution on the circumference. Beat characteristics of King Song-Dok Bell are explained in detail using the beat map and the measured modal data.

  • This study proposes a method of an equivalent bell model in order to tune the beat period of a Korean bell. In a Korean bell having a slight asymmetry, each circumferential mode splits into a mode pair which has a slight difference in frequency, and the interaction of the mode pair makes a beat in vibration and sound. An equivalent bell model which consists of an axi-symmetric bell and an equivalent point mass, has the same mode property as in a real bell. The equivalent bell model is constructed by the finite element analysis based upon the theory of a revolutionary shell Using the equivalent bell model, the beat period is predicted when the bell thickness is locally decreased to improve the beat property. The predicted result is verified by experiment on a test bell. The proposed method is useful to save the time required for tuning the beat period of a large bell.
