  • This study aims to introduce and review on the recovery technologies of rare earth elements(REEs) from coal ash. Many researchers have been carried out by various beneficiation processes, such as particle size separation, magnetic separation, specific gravity, and flotation to recover rare earth elements from coal ash generated from Pulverized Coal(PC) boiler. Through the beneficiation process, it was confirmed that concentration of rare earth elements was much lower than the 4,700 ppm, and that additional enrichment treatment through wet process was needed for the products recovered after the beneficiation process. It was confirmed that the rare earth elements contained in coal ash were applied to the leaching process after pretreatment such as alkali-fusion to improve leaching efficiency. Although beneficiation and leaching methods have been studied, its optimum recovery technologies for rare earth elements not been confirmed up to now, research on the recovery of rare earth contained in coal ash is reported to continue. In case of Korea, the technology for the recovery of rare earth elements from coal ash and coal by-product could not been confirmed up to present. In these reasons, it is urgent to develop technologies such as beneficiation and leaching process continuously.

  • Titanium and iron are closely related in nature, although titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust. Iron in titanium ores must be removed for use as feedstocks in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigments and pure $TiCl_4$ for metal titanium. In this study, various beneficiation processes of ilmenite for production of $TiO_2$ have been reviewed and compared. Most of these processes involve a combination of pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. These beneficiation processes of ilmenite generate considerable quantities of wastes primarily in the form of iron salt, iron oxide and acidic effluents. Therefore, it is important that recovery of acid value from waste and conversion of iron bearing waste to useful materials for development of new beneficiation processes of ilmenite.

  • A study on the dry beneficiation of sericite occurring in the Daehyun Mine of the Republic of Korea region as performed by applying selective grinding and air classification techniques. Quartz and sericite occurred in the raw ore as major components. The results of liberation using a ball mill and an impact mill showed that the contents of $R_2O$ were increased while $SiO_2$ was decreased in proportion to decreasing particle size. According to the XRD, XRF analysis and the EDS of SEM analysis, the ball mill gave a better grade product in $R_2O$ content than the impact mill when the particle size was the same. When the raw ore was ground by the impact mill with arotor speed 57.6 m/sec and then followed by 15,000rpm classification using an air classifier, the chemical composition of the over flowed product was 49.65wt% $SiO_2$, 32.15wt% $Al_2O_3$, 0.13wt% $Fe_2O_3$, 10.37wt% $K_2O$, and 0.14wt% $Na_2O$. This result indicates that the $R_2O$ contents were increased by 49.5% compared to that of the raw ore. From these results described above, it is suggested that hard mineral such as Quartz little ground by selective grinding using impact mill whereas soft mineral such as sericite easily ground to small size. As a result of that hard minerals can be easily removed from the finely ground sericite by air classification and the $R_2O$ grade of thus obtained concentrate was improved to higher than 10wt% which can be used for ceramics raw materials.

  • A study on the beneficiation of illite occurring in Youngdong province is performed with applying selective grinding and air classification techniques. Quartz and illite are occurred as major components, and sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite are associated as minor components. The result of sieving test shows that contents of Al₂O₃, K₂O and ignition loss are increased, whereas SiO₂ is decreased with particle size decrease. Fe₂O₃ content is almost same in all the particle size range but slightly lower at coarse particles. The yield of fine particles is increased with increasing rotor speed in both grinding stage and air classification stage. When the selective grinding and air classification are carried out at optimal condition, yield of the concentrate is 76.16 wt.%. The chemical compositions of the concentrate are SiO₂70.13%, Al₂O₃ 19.40%, Fe₂O₃ 1.62%, K₂O 5.20%, and ignition loss 2.77%. The beneficiation process developed in the current study is very effective method which purification and particle size control can be achieved simultaneously.

  • The characteristics of beneficiating kaolin mineral by liberation (selective grinding) and air classification have been investigated, comparing the grinding rates of ball mill and impact mill. The ore was ground using a ball mill and a impact mill to evaluate the grindability of the two grinding methods based on the constant production amount of fine particles in size less than 325 mesh. Then, the fine product was further separated into two fractions using an air-classifier and each fraction was chemically analyzed to compare the beneficiation efficiency of the two grinding methods. The chemical grade of kaolin mineral decreased as increasing the grinding rate of both the mills. particularly in the case of ball mill because of overgrinding impurities such as quartz and feldspar. In the case of the ball milling, the fine fraction less than 325 mesh was air-classified at a cutting point of $43\;{\mu}m$. The production rate of the air-classified concentrate was found to be 66.2 wt%, removing 5.3% of $Fe_2O_3$ and 34.6% of CaO. Under the same conditions mentioned above with the impact mill, the production rate of the air-classified concentrate was 64.4 wt%, removing 34.2% of $Fe_2O_3$, 67.6% of CaO and 25.0% of $TiO_2$. Therefore, our results indicate that impact mill is superior to ball mill in terms of impurity removal.

  • Sericite is a clay mineral that has a wide applications in the industry, depending on its purity. To maintain sericite's purity as high as possible it is necessary to remove its gangue minerals or control their contents prior to use for high value-added products and applications. In this study, the wet beneficiation of sericite by applying selective grinding and sedimentation techniques, were investigated. The ore mineral was composed mainly of sericite, quartz and calcite. Analysis showed that the content of sericite increased along with the particle size decrease, but the contents of impurity minerals as quartz and calcite were tended to decrease relatively with particle size decrease. The results of liberation tests using an attrition scrubber showed that the increase in residence time and slurry density have increased the generation of fine particles in -325 mesh size range. It was observed, however, that the contents of impurities such as quartz and calcite in such fine particles also increased during prolonged scrubbing. In the dispersed form without breaking, the yield of the recovered concentrate was 15.4 wt% and the $K_2O$ content was 9.84 wt%, after the dispersed slurry was allowed to settle for 20 minutes. On the other hand, the concentrate yield was increased to 23.4 wt% after 10 minute attrition scrubbing and 40 minute sedimentation, while its $K_2O$ content was decreased to 9.71 wt%. Most of final products were observed as platelet-shaped particles containing Si, Al and K which are main component of sericite.

  • Titanium's importance as a mineral resource is increasing, but the Korean industry depends on imports. Ilmenite is the principal titanium ore. However, research and development from raw materials have not been investigated yet in detail. Hence, measures to secure a stable titanium supply chain are urgently needed. Accordingly, through beneficiation technology, we evaluated the possibility of technological application for the efficient recovery of valuable minerals. As a result of the experiments, we confirmed that mineral particles existed as fine particles due to weathering, making recovery through classification difficult. Consequently, applying beneficiation technologies, i.e., specific gravity separation, magnetic separation, and flotation, makes it possible to recover valuable minerals such as hematite and rutile. However, there are limitations in increasing the quality and yield of TiO2 due to the mineralogical characteristic of the hematite and rutile contained in titanium ore. Hametite is combined with rutile even at fine particles. Therefore, it is essential to develop mineral processing routes, to recover iron, vanadium, and rare earth elements as resources. On that account, we used grinding technology that improves group separation between constituent minerals and magnetic separation technology that utilizes the difference in magnetic sensitivity between fine mineral particles. The development of beneficiation technology that can secure the economic feasibility of valuable materials after reforming iron oxide and titanium oxide components is necessary.
