Sulfonylurea (SU)-resistant weeds include seven annual weeds such as Monochoria vaginalis, Scirpus juncoides and Cyperus difformis, etc., and three perennial weeds of Scirpus planiculmis, Sagittaria pigmaea and Eleocharis acicularis as of 2010 since identification Monochoria korsakowii in the reclaimed rice field in 1998. The Echinochloa oryzoides resistant to acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors has been confirmed in wet-direct seeding rice field of the southern province, Korea in 2009. In the beginning of occurrence of SU-resistant weeds the M. vaginalis, S. juncoides and C. difformis were rapidly and individually spreaded in different fields, however, theses resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same filed as time goes by. The resistant biotype by weed species demonstrated about 10- to 1,000-fold resistance, base on $GR_{50}$ (50% growth reduction) values of the SU herbicides tested. And the resistant biotype of E. oryzoides to cyhalofop-butyl, pyriminobac-methyl, and penoxsulam was about 14, 8, and 11 times more resistant than the susceptible biotype base on $GR_{50}$ values. In history of paddy herbicides in Korea, the introduction of SU herbicides including besulfuron-metyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl that control many troublesome weeds at low use rates and provide excellent crop safety gave farmers and many workers for herbicide business refreshing jolt. The products and applied area of SU-included herbicides have been rapidly increased, and have accounted for about 69% and 96%, respectively, in Korea. The top ten herbicides by applied area were composed of all SU-included herbicides by 2003. The concentrated and successive treatment of ACCase and ALS inhibitors for control of barnyardgrass in direct-seeded rice led up to the resistance of E. oryzoides. Also, SU-herbicides like pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and imazosulfuron which are effective to barnyardgrass can be bound up with the resistance of E. oryzoides. The ALS activity isolated from the resistant biotype of M. korsakowii to SU-herbicides tested was less sensitive than that of susceptible biotype. The concentration of herbicide required for 50% inhibition of ALS activity ($I_{50}$) of the SU-resistant M. korsakowii was 14- to 76-fold higher as compared to the susceptible biotype. No differences were observed in the rates of [$^{14}C$]bensulfuron uptake and translocation. ALS genes from M. vaginalis resistant and susceptible biotypes against SU-herbicides revealed a single amino acid substitution of proline (CCT), at 197th position based on the M. korsakowii ALS sequence numbering, to serin (TCT) in conserved domain A of the gene. Carfentrazone-ethyl and pyrazolate were used mainly to control SU-resistant M. vaginalis by 2006, the early period, in Korea. However, the alternative herbicides such as benzobicyclone, to be possible to control simultaneously the several resistant weeds, have been developing and using broadly because the several resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same filed. The top ten herbicides by applied area in Korea have been occupied by products of 3-way mixture type including herbicides with alternative mode of action for the herbicide resistant weeds. Mefenacet, fentrazamide and cafenstrole had excellent controlling effects on the ACCase and ALS inhibitors resistant when they were applied within 2 leaf stage.
This study was carried out to understand the immigration period, climatic conditions for mass immigration and bionomical characters ofthe brown pLanthopper(BPH) in Hae NamThe results are as follows ; (1) The Periods of first immigraion and mass immigration of BPH , were from the late June to early JuLy and from earlyto mid JuLy in HaeNam, that were faster about 15-30days than in inland of ChonnanThe climatic factors that related closely to mass immigration wereas follows ; temp.: $20{\;}~{\;}25^{\circ}C$, humidity : 86 ~ 95 % , wind direcion : SW, wind velocity: 1.0 ~ 2.9gm/sec. (2)The population of immigranted BPH was in the field much more overthe mountain near coast than other places . Biotype composition showed that biotype I was on the decrease and biotype II, III were on the increase (3)The bionomical characters were variable, for climatic conditions, that egg stage, nymphal stage and adult stafe of immigranted BPHwere 9-12days, 13-16days and 12-36days respectively, that hatchability(%) and emergence rate ( % ) were higher than 80%. The adult Longevity in female and macropterous BPH showed Longerthan that of male and brachypterous respectively. (4) The distance of nymphs and brachypterous adults move by walking was within 16cm over the water surface, by hopping was within 20cm horizontally.
This study has been carried out for investigating the relatedness of representative 135 Shigella sonnei strains isolated from 2000 to 2004 by using biotyping and antimicrobial resistance. All strains showed typical biochemical characterisics of Shigella strain. Among 135 strains,79 (58.5%) strains were biotype "g",54 (40.0%) strains were biotype "a" and 2 (1.5%) strains were biotype "e". The results of susceptibility test against 16 antimicrobial agents were like this. Most of strains were susceptible to AN, CIP, C and GM. 129 (95.6%) strains were resistant to SXT, 126 (93.3%) strains were resistant to TE and 122 (90.4%) strains were resistant to SM. One hundred thirty two (97.8%) strains were resistant to more than two antimicrobial agents. R28 type (antimicrobial resistance patterns 28: resistant to AM, SAM, TE, TIC, SXT, K, SM and AmC) were 42 strains (31.1%). The other strains were showed 33 kinds of R patterns. The results of $bla_{TEM}$, sulII, tetA and strA gene detection were coincided with phenotype of antimicrobial resistance by disk diffusion method. But some strains which had sulII and strA genes were not showed the resistance against SXT and SM.
This study investigated the changes in the fitness of brown planthopper, NilapaHata lugens, to several rice varieties with different resistance background, after multi-generational selection on a resistant rice variety. A susceptible strain of brown planthopper (Dongjin-5) had been reared on the Chungchungbyeo with Bph1 resistance gene for three generations (Chungchung-G3) and six generations (Chungchung-G6), then the fitness change was evaluated by measuring their longevity, fecundity, preferences, and survivorships on the varieties with various background of resistance. After being selected three to six generations on Chungchungbyeo, feeding preference, adult longevity, and fecundity increased, where as nymphal period reduced when they were reared on various varieties with Bph1 gene. The egg Periods were not much different among the varieties fed on, except for the Chungchung-G6 on the rice varieties of Milyang63 (bph2 gene) and Gayabyeo (Bph1+bph2 gene). These results suggest that the susecptible Donajin-5 (Biotype-1) can be easily converted to a resistant biotype-2 capable of overcoming the resistant varieties with Bph 1 gene.
A suspected biotype of Scirpus planiculmis to be resistant to sulfonylurea(SU) herbicides was identified in Seosan reclaimed paddy fields in Korea, in 2004. The fields have been cultivated for monocultural rice production with wet-direct seeding method and continuously treated with SU-based herbicide mixtures for thirteen years since 1990. In greenhouse studies, 6 different SU herbicides, such as azimsulfuron, bensulfuron-methyl, cinosulfuron, ethoxysulfuron imazosulfuron and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, completely controlled the Musan assession of Scirpus planiculmis at the recommended dose of each herbicide, however, the Seosan accession of S. planiculmis biotype was survived 20 to 45% even treated with 5 times higher dose of each recommended rate of all herbicides treated. The $GR_{50}$ values of 6 SU herbicides for Seosan accession of S. planiculmis were 47 to 100 times higher than those for Musan accession of S. planiculmis. The $I_{50}$ values pyrazosulfuron-ethyl to acetolactate synthase(ALS) extracted from Sesan and Muan accession of S. planiculmis were 409 nM and 0.8 nM, respectively. The $I_{50}$ value of Seosan was 511 times higher than that of Muan accession. These results suggested that the Seosan accession of S. planiculmis have strong resistant characteristics to 6 SU herbicides, respectively, indicating that resistance might be due to the alteration in the target site of ALS.
A total of 8 strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis isolated in land-marine tank system of Kyongnam and Kyongbuk. Prefecture were tested for the biological and biochemical characteristics. These strains were isolated from pathologic specimens of cultured flounder. Paralichthys olivaceus. Growth of the isolates was good on BHIA, HIA. Staphylococcus No. 110 and ETGP. Growth was good at NaCl concentration between 2.0 and 3.0%, about $30^{\circ}C$ and at pH values about 7.0. DNase and coagulase production were negative, and all isolates except FSJ-2 strain were positive in hemolysis. Urease was positive reaction, and novobiocin resistance was negative. Acid was produced anaerobically from glucose and maltose. All isolates except FSJ-19 strain produced weakly were negative in anaerobic acid production from mannitol. Acid was produced aerobically from glucose, fructose, galactose, sucrose, maltose and dextrine. But all isolates were not gas production. In characterization of clinically isolates, four different biotype codes were obtained when the all isolated were tested simultaneously. Four different antibiotic susceptibility patterns were obtained. On the basis of these characteristics, the isolates were identified as Staphylococcus epidermidis.
These studies were carried out to identify Bacillus cereus group 1..5-] strain isolated from 5uyeong Bay. This strain was differentiated from B. cereus group using conventional, API system and fatty acid composition analysis. Colony characteristics were opague. mucoid, entire margin. convex. circular and non hemolysis on sheep blood agar plates, and were observed with central spore forming positive bacilli in a Gram stained preparation. and had no motility. The carbohydrates tested; glucose.maltose, and sucrose were assimilated but neither trehalose nor salicin were assimilated. This strain ultilized gelatin and was also inhibited by 6.5% NaCI. The results of biochemical examination were differented from B. cereus group LS-1 compared with others B. cereus group. The fatty acid composition contained major amounts of branched chain acids. iso $C_{15}$ and iso $C_{13}$ and the range of chain length was $C_{12}$ to C"$C_{17}$ and n$C_{15}$, acid was not detected. Automated fatty acid computer profile indicated "B. mycoides GC subgroup B of 0.312 similarity index." The results agreed with other research cases. On the other hand. A TB computer prolile index of API system (API 50 CHB & API 20E) identified" Doubtful profile of 99.7% B. firmus" . These results were presented with considerable discrepancies between API system and fatty acid analysis. With 67 biochemical characters. the similarity matrix of B. mycaides (KCTC 1033). B. thuringiensis (KCTC 1033). B. cereus (5-3) and B. mycoides (S-12) showed 42%. 42%. 59%, and 52%. respectively. Through the key tests and fatty acid analyses. we could notice the appearance of B. mycoides of the B. cereus group and this leads us to suspect the existence of a new biotype B. mycoides.
Tile present study was carried out to investigate the incidence of bovine brucellsis in Cheju-do during the period from 1985 to 1990. The results were summarized as follows. 1. In the total 239,238 cattles tested. 1180(0.49%) were positive by standard tube agglutination test during the period from 1985 to 1990. 2. The major causes of incidence on brucellosis was grazing with carriers and repeated incidence in a herd. 3. The 13 Brucella abortus biotype 1 isolated from 10(50%) of 20 cattles slaughtered on brucellosis in 1990.
A rotting bacterium was isolated from decayed root of ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer), cultured purely, and its pathogenicity was confirmed by reinoculation test. The strain causing ginseng root rot was identified as Pseudomonas fluoresens biotype II. The strain was somewhat different from P.marginalis and P.talaasii, considering the number of flagella, pathotype and ability of indole production. The strain did not exhibit pathogenicity to other plants tested, such as red kidney bean(Phasolus vulgaris L.), soy bean (Glycine max Merr.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and cowpea bean (Vigna sinensis Savi.).
A strain US50-3 producing water-soluble red pigment was isolated from the pond separating oil from water near the oil storage tanks. The strain US50-3 was identified as a strain of Serratia marcescens considering its morphological and physiological characteristics, and DNA G+C contents. It showed a little difference comparing to the Type strain and was considered to be another biotype strain.
