Numerical simulation of flow-induced birefringence in injection molded disk

  • This study is an attempt to understand the birefringence and stress development in an injection molded disk. A computer code was developed to simulate all three stages of the injection molding process filling, packing and cooling by finite element method. The constitutive equation used here was compressible Leonov model. The PVT relationship was assumed to follow the Tait equation. The flow-induced birefringence was related to the calculated flow stresses through the linear stress-optical law. The predicted birefringence was in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • It is necessary to improve mechanical and optical porperties in the optical disk substrates as the information storage devices with high storage density using blue laser are being developed. Injection compression molding is regarded as the most suitable process to manufacture optical disk substrates for quality recording and read-out. In the present research, the effects of processing conditions and the insulation layer thickness on gapwise birefringence and the land-groove pattern were investigated. It was found that the values of the birefringence distribution were very sensitive to mold temperature history, and the level of birefringence reduced and, furthermore, the quality of replication was improved due to the insulation layer.

  • A Study of birefringence in an aspheric lens of injection molding became more important to improve its optical properties. In the present study, the experimental study was carried out to investigate the relationship between birefringence and injection molded conditions. The processing factors are conditions include packing pressure, packing time, injection speed, melt temperature of optical resin and wall temperature. Birefringence was observed figures by using a polarizer in light. This experiments were carried out using the simulation software and injection molding machine.

  • Recently, injection molding process became more popular than ever to produce large quantities of high precision products. Extensive studies have been conducted for reducing the residual stresses and birefringence in injection-molded optical products. Flow-induced and thermally-induced stresses and birefringence have been found as two main sources during injection molding process. Generally, quantitative value of birefringence can be measured with polarizing microscope using the compensator. However, it is difficult to measure low order retardation with microscope, so developing a measurement system for low order optical path difference is in need. In the present paper, a system using Photo Elastic Modulator (PEM) is demonstrated to measure low phase retardation in injection-molded products.

정밀 광학부품의 복굴절 분석을 통한 각종 성형법의 영향에 관한 연구 (The Effect of Various Molding Methods for Precision Optical Products Using Birefringence Analysis)

  • As the adoption of injection molding technology increases, injected-molded optical products require higher dimensional accuracy and optical stability than ever before. In the present study, four kinds of molding methods, i.e., conventional injection molding (CIM), injection/compression molding (ICM), rapid heat and cooling the mold(RHCM) and rapid injection/compression molding (RICM) were selected in order to investigate the optical anisotropy of a 7 inch Light Guide Plate(LGP) by examining the gap-wise distribution of birefringence and the extinction angle. The results indicate that the compression process can decrease flow-induced birefringence over the whole region and that rapid heating can decrease the birefringence level better than conventional molding. In addition, for the combination of compression and rapid heating a reversal flow was detected from the distribution of the extinction angle near the gate.

Shear-induced microstructure and rheology of cetylpyridinium chloride/sodium salicylate micellar solutions

  • In this article, we considered shear-induced microstructure and rheological behavior of micellar solutions of cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) in the presence of a structure-forming additive, sodium salicylate (NaSal). Shear viscosity, shear moduli and flow birefringence were measured as functions of the surfactant and additive concentrations. In the presence of NaSal, the micellar solution exhibited the non-linear rheological behavior due to the formation of supramolecular structures when the molar ratio of NaSal to CPC exceeded a certain threshold value. Flow birefringence probed the change in micelle alignment under shear flow. At low shear rates, the flow birefringence increased as the shear rate increased. On the other hand, fluctuation of flow birefringence appeared from the shear rate near the onset of shear thickening, which was caused by shear-induced coagulation or aggregation. These results were confirmed by the SEM images of in situ gelified micelle structure through sol-gel route.

Simultaneous Measurements of Stress and Birefringence Development during Extensional Deformation of Cyclic Olefin Copolymer

  • To clarify the structure development of cyclic olefin copolymers in stretching and relaxation processes, on-line measurements of optical retardation and tensile force were performed. Birefringence increased continuously whereas stress showed yielding at stretching temperatures of $160^{\circ}C$. At $170^{\circ}C$, stress yielding was not observed and stress and birefringence increased monotonously with an increase in the strain. In the relaxation process, stress and birefringence decreased monotonously at all the temperatures examined. The slope for the stress vs. birefringence relation at initial stage of stretching increased with an increase in temperature, whereas that for the relaxation stage was significantly larger that for the stretching process, and therefore showed a significant hysteresis.

  • It is necessary to improve the pattern replication and birefringence in LGP(Light guide panel) for better optical performance. In the present paper, the effects of injection-compression and injection-press mode with normal injection mold on the distribution of transcription of pattern and birefringence were studied. It was found that the values of pattern replication was improved and the birefringence was reduced for the cases of low initial clamping force in injection-compression mode and for the cases of longer mold opening length in injection-press mode, repectively.

  • In this study, we have investigated the photoinduced birefringence of Ag plarized-photodoping in double-layer of Ag doped chalcognide thin films and dependence of polarization states in chalcogenide thin films. Also, we have investigated the polarization dependence of photoinduced birefringence and the anisotropy of absorption in an amorphous As$\sub$40/Ge$\sub$10/Se$\sub$15/S$\sub$35/ chalcogenide thin films using two 632.8nm He-Ne lasers, which have a smaller energy than the optical energy gap (E$\sub$OP/) of the film, i.e., an exposure of sub-bandgap light (hν$\sub$op/). The photoinduced phenomena of Ag polarized-photodooping increasing the linear dichroism(d), about 84% and birefringence(Δn), about 23%. It will offer lots of information for the photodoping mechanism and analysis of chalcogenide thin films.

Finite-difference Time-domain Study on Birefringence Changes of the Axon During Neural Activation

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in optical imaging of neural activity because the optical neuroimaging has considerable advantages over conventional imaging. Birefringence of the axon has been reported to change during neural activation, but the neurophysiological origin of the change is still unresolved. This study hypothesizes that the birefringence signal is at least partially attributed to the transient cellular volume change associated with nerve excitation. To examine this hypothesis, we investigated how the intensity of cross-polarized light transmitting through the axon would change as the size of the axon changes. For this purpose, a two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain program was developed with the improvement of the total-field/scattered-field method which reduces numerical noise. The results support our hypothesis in that the computed cross-polarized signals exhibit some agreement with previously-reported birefringence signals.
