  • Objective: The current study was to test if the developed sphygmomanometer was working well and blood pressure information could be collected and monitored systematically through the internet. We tested if the sphygmomanometer and services for blood pressure controlled high blood pressure significantly and the ubiquitous monitoring could be used further. Methods: Kyungwon University, KT Co., Gil Medical Center, LIG Nex1 Co., and Sujeong Health Center conducted an ubiquitous high blood control project in Sujeong-gu, Sungnam, Korea from Mar. 5 to May 16. We developed and applied sphygmomanometer. We distributed the devices to 27 high blood pressure patients. The blood pressures of the residents were monitored through the internet when they measured blood pressures in their homes. A nurse monitored and consulted their blood pressures in the monitoring center in Kyungwon University during the demonstration period. The consultant called them and consulted on their blood pressures in few seconds they used the sphygmomanometers. For the significance of change in blood pressure, we tested statistically with Generalized Additive Model(GAM) and Multi-level Analysis. Results: Both GAM and Multi-level Analysis showed that the blood pressures of persons with ubiquitous blood pressure management decreased significantly as time passed. Conclusions: The internet monitoring and services are considered to be promising because most of the participants were satisfied especially because somebody was caring their health. The decrease of blood pressures was significant by GAM and Multi-level Analysis. Thus, we can apply ubiquitous blood pressure management to health promotion projects.

  • Compression wear provides clothing pressure and affects how blood flows. Facilitating a blood flow is one of the most important functions of compression wear. The wearer's sensibility should be considered when designing compression wear. This study instructed participants to put on 5 types of sport compression wear with different pressure levels (CP-1 to CP-5), measured clothing pressure, blood flow level, blood flow rate, and surface temperature, and examined the pressure level that influenced blood flow through a subjective sensibility assessment. An experiment measured the clothing pressure of compression wear available in the market and found that the pressure ranged 0.6-1.1 kPa for the ankle, 0.7-2.3 kPa for the calf, and 0.9-1.9 kPa for the thigh. Meanwhile, blood flow levels and rates significantly increased when participants wore CP-1, which had the highest clothing pressure level, and CP-2 and CP-4 with middle-level pressure. After exercise, CP-2's surface temperature was the highest and revealed that wearing CP-2 facilitated blood flow. CP-2 was evaluated as most positive in the sensibility assessment and showed a clothing pressure of 0.67-1.82 kPa; its pressure for the calf did not surpass 2.0 kPa. Considering positive physical effect of compression wear on blood flow and subjective psychological effect on participants, CP-2 (0.67-1.82 kPa) would have the most suitable clothing pressure level among other types of the wear in this study.

  • Objective: This study was undertaken to examine the effect of Cortex Phellodendri on prostatic urethral pressure and mean arterial blood pressure of rabbits. Methods: To measure prostatic urethral pressure and mean arterial blood pressure, a Mikro-Tip catheter transducer was inserted and positioned in the prostatic urethra and left carotid artery. After a stabilizing period, phenylephrine ($1{\mu}/kg$) was intravenously administered two or three times to increase the urethral pressure and mean arterial blood pressure. Cortex Phellodendri (2.5 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg doses of Cortex Phellodendri extracted from 80% Ethanol) was administered intravenously, followed by phenylephrine, with no time interval between the doses. The urethral pressure and mean arterial blood pressure were then measured to determine whether they had stabilized. Results and Conclusion: Cortex Phellodendri appeared to inhibit phenylephrine-induced increases in prostatic urethral pressure and mean arterial blood pressure.

  • Recently, the seriousness of high blood pressure was appeared as the most frequent disease of a the whole sickness in the world. However, the treatment of this disease is uncertain and produces an adverse reaction of a medicine therapy. Also, the patients are burdened with a fee for medical treatment. Therefore, in this paper, we studied effectively and financially to execute the treatment of high blood pressure using the Chinese medicine theorem that is recently arousing the great interest of the people. The main theories in this paper are blood vessel theory and acupuncture, respectively. Especially, the composed circuit systems are classified the blood pressure depressor part and the meridian points discrimination part, respectively. The blood pressure depressor part is composed generally of low-frequency generation circuit, charging-discharging circuit, and micro-computer circuit. Finally, this research have the advantage of discrimination parts such as regular voltage generating circuit, stimulus circuit, amplifying circuit, and alarm circuit.

  • Studies were undertaken on the changes in the renal blood flow by relating them with the alterations in the amplitudes in the rheogram of rabbits. The changing pattern of the electrical conductivity was recorded by means of the needle electrodes inserted into the kidney and the surrounding aluminium foil which was grounded. The Impedance Rheograph manufactured by the Narco Company was used. The small artifact which persisted after ligation of the renal vessels was subtracted from the value obtained in each pulsatile wave in the rheogram. The animals were nembutalized intravenously, 30 mg/kg. A plastic canule was inserted into the carotid artery and the arterial blood pressure was monitored continuously with the pressure transducer connected to the physiograph. Stepwise bleedings were performed on the animal. The first bleeding was between 13 to 18 ml in the amount, and it was folowed by consecutive hemorrhages, 5 or 10 ml each time. The total amount of bleeding was summed as much as 1.5-2% of the body weight. Two minutes fter each bleeding th arterial blood pressure, ECG and the rheogram were taken. That was the necessary time to obtain the stabilized picture of each parameter. After closing the bleeding process, the shed blood was retransfused into the animal and the response in the renal blood flow was observed as well as the arterial blood pressure. Particularly the presence or absence of the autoregulatory mechanism in the situation of the hemorrhage was also studied. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In 7 cases out of 22, that was about one third of the total number of experiments, the autoregulatory mechanism of the renal blood flow persisted even in acute hemorrhage, and the decreases in the renal blood flow were less than 10% of the control values even when the arterial blood pressure dropped to 66-87% of the original value obtained before the bleeding. 2. Because of the stepwise bleeding the exact blood pressure at which the renal blood flow reduced as much as one third of the control value could not be obtained. However, the results revealed that the approximate pressure, expressed as percentage of the control value, was 50-60% in 3 cases, 61-70% in 4 cases and 71-80% in 8 cases. In one case the decrease in the renal blood flow exceeded one third of the control value before the pressure dropped to 80% of the control. 3. In 19 cases the decreases in the renal blood flow exceeded one half of the control values by hemorrhage. Then the arterial blood pressure revealed less than 40% of the control value in 6-cases. In 2 cases the pressure was 51-60% of the control pressure. In 5 cases the range of bleed pressure was 61-70%, and in e remaining 6 cases the pressure ranged from 71 to 80% of e control value. 4. Out of 15 cases of retransfusion after definite decreases in the renal blood flow loller·ing the hemorrhage, 9 cases restored their renal blood flow. On the contrary 6 cases showed low values even when the shed blood was retransfused. 5. Theories concerning the mechanism of the autoregulation of the renal blood flow were reviewed for the purpose of explanation of the results obtained. However, there are much to be done before greater satisfaction

  • The desirable method to diagnose abnormal blood pressure is to measure and manage blood pressure continuously and regularly. However, the sphygmomanometers that are based on a cuff have faults in that they can not measure the blood pressure continuously and they cause an unpleasant feeling. Therefore, it is essential to develop a new measuring method that causes no pain and that can obtain blood pressure continuously without any unpleasant feeling. Thus, we propose here a regression method to estimate the systolic blood pressure by using the PTTL(pulse transit time on leg) with some body parameters which are chosen from the relational analysis with systolic blood pressure. The data we use to make the regression model were obtained in triplicate from each of 50 males who were from 18 to 35 years. And we made estimation experiments of blood pressure on 10 males who did not take part in the making the regression model. According to the results, the proposed method showed a mean error of 4.00 mmHg and the standard variance was 2.45 mmHg. When we comparing the results of the proposed method with the rule of American National Standards Institute of the Association of the Advancement of Medical Instruments(ANSI/AAMI), the results satisfied the rule of a mean error less than 5 mmHg and a standard variance less than 8 mmHg. Therefore we were able to validate the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify differences in blood pressure according to cuff size and measurement sites of the participants. Method: The participants consisted of 50 women and 50 men whose upper arm circumference was $26\sim30cm$. They had no chronic illness and gave consent to participate. Blood pressure of the wrist was measured in the sitting position, the upper arm with a standard cuff, large and small cuffs were used for measurement in supine position and the thigh in prone position. The data were analyzed with paired t-test using SPSS 12.0 program. Result: The data for the upper arm showed a difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressure depending on the site of measurement. There was a significant difference between measurements with a standard cuff and measurements with large and small cuffs. The systolic blood pressure of the wrist and the thigh were significantly lower than that of the upper arm. Conclusion: These results suggest that the selection of an appropriate cuff is an essential element in ensuring accuracy when measuring blood pressure and differences in systolic blood pressure for the upper arm, wrist and thigh indicate the need to record the measuring site when measuring blood pressure.
