This study was performed to examine the relationship between the body mass index (BMI), the body fat, and the serum lipids of post-menopausal women in rural areas. The subjects were 510 women aged 50 and over. As a result of this study, we found a trend of decreasing BMI as age increased, but body fat increased. In addition, there was a significant decreasing of the lean body mass than an increasing of the body mass index according to increasing age. Therefore, this study confirmed that a main cause of rural women being classified as obese is a decrease in lean body mass, rather than an increase in of body fat. Of all subjects, 36.3% ($18.5{\leq}BMI$ < 23) of all subjects were classified as having normal BMI, whereas only 21.4% were classified as having normal body fat. Out of 190 subjects who were body fat 30% and over, 38 subjects were classified as obese ($BMI{\geq}25$) and 113 subjects were classified as overweight ($23{\leq}BMI$ < 25). The percentile of those with a BMI of $25kg/m^2$ was 70, and they had 30.82% body fat. HDL cholesterol showed a negative correlation with anthropometric factors (height, weight, body mass index, waist circumference, waist hip ratio, body fat), and total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides showed a positive correlation. Especially, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and hip circumference showed significant correlations. Because of differences in the body fat and lean body mass by age group, it seems difficult to assess obesity via BMI only. The elderly especially should have a higher significance placed on body fat or abdominal fat than only BMI.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the body mass index and food habits of female university students (nutrition majors) in Seoul. The means of height, weight and BMI were 161.22${\pm}$4.63cm, 52.76${\pm}$6.59kg, and 22.20${\pm}$3.98, respectively. Subjects were divided into 3 groups based on BMI. The ratio of underweight, normal, and overweight students was 25.2%, 56.3%, and 18.5%. respectively. There were significant differences in the recognition rate of body shape and the way to maintain health by BMI. And self satisfaction rate of body shape was significantly higher in underweight subjects compared with others. There was no significant difference in the rate of activity and exercise, food behavior, intake frequency of various foods, intake of convenience food and carbonated drink according to BMI. Weight and body fat of subjects had a significant correlation with BMI. and height, frequency of taking food, frequency of meals, food behavior, intake food, health and exercise consciousness rate showed no correlation with BMI.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to understand the correlation between spleen deficiency syndrome, body mass index (BMI) and eating habit in children and adolescents and to provide foundation of preventive care and treatment. Methods A survey was conducted with 115 children and adolescents, who were 4th, 5th and 6th grade of elementary school in Gwangju from March 2nd, 2016 to April 8th, 2016. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using the measured height and weight. Spleen deficiency syndrome and eating habit in children and adolescents were investigated by using the Deficiency of the Spleen Questionnaire and Korean Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (K-CEBQ). A data analysis was performed by using SPSS 23.0 program. Results 1. There was no statistically significant correlation between spleen deficiency syndrome and body mass index (BMI). 2. Children and adolescents with spleen deficiency syndrome were interested in food rather than avoided it. 3. There was a positive correlation between body mass index (BMI) and FR (Food responsiveness), "Food approach". The correlation between the healthy weight group and FR is statistically significant negative correlation. Conclusions Due to various limitations, it is difficult to generalize the correlation between spleen deficiency syndrome, body mass index (BMI) and eating habit in children and adolescents. Therefore additional research is necessary to confirm this study's findings.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between body mass index(BMI) and periodontal disease in Korean adult from the data of the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES). Methods: The subjects were 3,309 adults from 25 ro 45 years old in the fifth KNHANES. The subjects were divided into three BMI categories: normal weight 1,549(BMI ${\leq}22.9kg/m^2$), overweight 792(BMI $23.0-25.0kg/m^2$) and obesity 968(BMI ${\geq}25.0kg/m^2$). Periodontal disease was assessed by community periodontal index(CPI) and periodontitis was defined as ${\geq}$ code 3. Results: Increased BMI adults had no significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis than those having normal body weight after adjusting for variables; the odds ratio(OR) was 1.06 in overweight and 1.23 in obesity. BMI and periodontitis had no significant relation to increased age, but the age increase tended to have high odds ratio. Women had a higher OR than men. Conclusions: Through this study, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between the obesity index and periodontitis in the further study.
Purpose: This study is to investigate perceived stress, depression, body mass index (BMI), and nutrient intakes of soldiers in the army. Methods: The subjects were 301 soldiers recruited from two divisions of the army in Kangwon-Do. The data was collected from August 3 to 9, 2009. Perceived stress, depression, lifestyle, dietary habits, BMI, and nutrient intake were assessed. Results: Subjects' distribution for normal weight, underweight, overweight, and obese was 67.4%, 0.7%, 16.3%, and 15.6%, respectively. BMI was related to class, service branch, duration of military service and being on a diet, whereas BMI was not found to be related to perceived stress, and depression. Some nutrient intakes such as dietary fiber, vitamin C, and Calcium was related to depression. Conclusion: This study suggests that soldiers need to undergo stress, depression management, and a nutritional education program.

This cross-sectional analytic study aimed to investigate any relationship between the body mass index (BMI) and an abnormal Pap smear. The subjects were 7,720 women aged 30-69 years who lived in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand, and had been recruited as participants in the Khon Kaen Cohort Study during 1990-2001. All had received Pap smear screening for cervical cancer. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between body mass index and an abnormal Pap smear. The mean BMI was $24.53kg/m^2$ (SD=3.98), and 2.14% had abnormal Pap smears. Compared with the reference group of women with a BMI ${\leq}22.9kg/m^2$, those with a body mass index of $23.0-24.9kg/m^2$ had a reduced risk of an abnormal smear (ORadj=0.92, 95%CI: 0.57-1.47), but women with a BMI $25.0-29.9kg/m^2$ were found to have an approximately 1.24 times higher risk ($OR_{adj}=1.24$, 95%CI: 0.86-1.80), and those with a BMI ${\geq}30.0kg/m^2$ had an approximately 1.63 times higher risk ($OR_{adj}=1.63$, 95%CI: 0.98-2.69). The results indicated that the risk of Pap smear abnormalities is increased in women who have a higher than normal body mass index, but this finding was not statistically significant. Nevertheless, public health personnel should encourage women to maintain their BMI in the normal range to reduce the possible future risk of cervical cancer.
Purpose: Overweight can be defined by the body mass index (BMI) and is likely associated with an increased cardiovascular disease risk. However, waist circumference (WC), a central adiposity index, may be a better indicator of cardiovascular disease risk. Studies comparing the effects of BMI and WC on cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure (BP), are rare in adolescents. Methods: We analyzed the correlations of BMI and WC with BP in 3,363 Korean adolescents (aged 10-19 years), using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2009-2011). Results: Systolic BP (SBP) in both sexes and diastolic BP (DBP) in boys were higher in the high BMI (>85th percentile) and high WC (>90th percentile) groups. High BMI and high WC were positively correlated with high SBP (>90th percentile) in both sexes, and high DBP (>90th percentile), in boys. BMI maintained its positive associations with SBP, DBP, high SBP, and high DBP in the normal weight ($BMI{\leq}85th$ percentile) and overweight (BMI>85th percentile) groups in both boys and girls, as well as in all subjects of both sexes, even after adjustment for WC. However, WC did not correlate with SBP, DBP, high SBP, or high DBP after adjustment for BMI in any group in either sex. Conclusion: In Korean adolescents, BMI correlated better with BP and high BP levels than WC. Further, BMI was positively associated with BP and high BP in the normal weight group as well as in the overweight group.

The purpose of this study was to determine the association of the Body Shape Index (ABSI) with suicide ideation and suicide attempts by controlling the body mass index (BMI), as well as general characteristics that may affect suicide. The study has used The Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2013 to 2015. A total of 13,155 participants were studied, excluding those who had no information on variables that could affect suicidal ideations and suicidal attempts. The chi-squared test and the multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. The results of the analysis showed that those who had obesity in BMI were more likely to commit suicide and suicide than those who were in 'standard' in BMI. In ABSI, Q3 group was more likely to commit suicide than Q1 group. The number of suicide attempt was significantly higher in the group with Q3 in ABSI than in Q1 group (3.623 times (95% CI 1.027-12.772)). The results of this study suggest that a higher ABSI compared to BMI means that it is possible to make a more extreme choice of suicide attempt rather than suicide ideation.
Objectives : This study was conducted to know how different Body mass index(BMI) were, according to age group, drinking, amount of smoking, fast blood sugar. Methods: We measured the Body mass index(BMI) in 5573 male, using Inbody 2.0(Biospace Co. Ltd, Korea), and then we analysed the 4 factors - age group, amount of drinking, smoking, fast blood sugar - which are related to BMI of male. Results: 1. BMI according to age group increased from -30 years group at the lowest to 41-50 years group at the highest and decreased after 51-60 years. 2. BMI according to amount of drinking increased from Nondrinker group(men who don't drink) years at the lowest to Drinker IT group(men who drink more than 4 bottles of Soju(360ml, 21%, distilled liquor) for a week) at the highest. 3. BMI according to amount of smoking increased from Smoker I group(men who smoke 1-10 pieces for a day) at the lowest to Smoker N group(men who smoke more than 31 pieces for a day) at the highest except Nonsmoker group(men who don't smoke). 4. BMI of group that not exceed 110mg/d${\ell}$ in fast blood sugar was lower in the group that exceed 110 mg/d${\ell}$ in fast blood sugar. Conclusions: We analysed the 4 factors - age group, amount of drinking, smoking, fast blood sugar - which are related to BMI of male.
Purpose: Somatotype drawing developed by Sorensen et al.(1983) has been evaluated as a simple instrument of obesity level without real somatic measuring as height and weight. This study was designed to validate somatotype drawings for obesity assessment by bioelectrical impedance body component analysis. Method: At first questionnaire of somatotype drawing was done. Subjects were measured body component by bioelectrical impedance analysis as weight, BMI(body mass index), WHR(waist-hip ratio), body water, protein mass, mineral mass, body fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, soft lean mass, fat free mass and percent body fat. We evaluated correlations between these data and somatotype drawings and tried to grouping of somatotype drawings with the means of major body component value. Result: The data were collected from 205 college women whose height and weight were $161.2\pm4.8,\;55\pm8.3$. Spearman's correlation coefficients of somatotype drawing were 0.74 with BMI, 0.68 with weight 0.69 with body fat mass, 0.65 with WHR. 0.64 with percent body fat after adiusted age. The grade of somatotype drawings were grouped as 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. 7-9 by BMI, body fat mass, weight, 1, 2-4, 5-6, 7-9 by WHR and 1-2, 3-4, 5-9 by percent body fat(ANOVA and Duncan's method). Conclusion: So quick instrument using somatotype drawings were useful tools for evaluation of obesity level and is applicable to screen degree of body fat in self-administered questionnaire survey.
