  • Numerical analysis is carried out to identify the appropriateness of the design codes that is available for the tensile design of fastening system at Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in this study. This study is intended for the cast-in-place anchor that is widely used for the fastening of equipment in Korean NPPs. The microplane model and the elastic-perfectly plastic model are employed for the quasi-brittle material like concrete and for the ductile material like anchor bolt as constitutive model for numerical analysis and smeared crack model is employed for the crack and damage phenomena. The developed numerical model is verified on a basis of the various test data of cast-in-place anchor. The appropriateness of both ACI 349 Code and CCD approach of CEB-FIP Code is evaluated for the tensile design of cast-in-place anchor and it is proved that both design codes give a conservative results compared with real tensile capacity of cast-in-place anchor.

  • The $45^{\circ}$cone failure theory has been used for concrete anchor bolt design, but the CCD (concrete capacity design) method was adopted as a new design method in 2000. The method was allowed to be used, however, only for anchors with a diameter of less than 50 mm and an embedment depth of less than 635 mm because it is based on the experiment results from medium-sized to small anchor bolts. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a rational concrete breakout capacity equation for medium-sized to large anchor bolts. In this study, tension tests on an M56 cast-in-place single anchor bolt with an effective embedment depth of 400-450 mm were carried out for the five test specimens. Based on the test results together with the other recent test results, the applicability of the concrete breakout capacity equation in the current design code to the large to medium-sized anchor bolts with an embedment depth of 280-1,200 mm was estimated.

  • The damage to non-structural elements in buildings has been increasing due to earthquakes. In Korea, post-installed anchors produced overseas have been mainly used for seismic anchorage of non-structural components to structures. Recently, a new cast-in-place concrete insert anchor installed in concrete without drilling has been developed in Korea. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to evaluate the tensile and shear strengths of the newly developed anchor under monotonic load. The failure modes of the tension specimens were divided into concrete breakout failure and steel failure, and all shear specimens showed steel failure. In both tension and shear, the maximum loads of specimens were greater than the nominal strengths predicted by the concrete design code (KDS 14 20 54). As a result, it is expected that the current code can also be used to calculate the strength of the developed cast-in anchor.

  • The 45-degree cone failure theory has been used in concrete anchor bolts design under shear loading, but the CCD (Concrete Capacity Design) method was adopted as a new design method since 2000. However, the method was allowed only for anchor diameters of less than 50mm because it is based on the experimental results of small size anchor bolts. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a rational concrete breakout capacity equation for medium-to-large size anchor bolts with large edge distance. In this study, shear tests on M56 cast-in-place single anchor bolt with edge distance of 350mm were performed using four test specimens. Based on the test results and findings of existing studies, a new equation for the breakout capacity of anchor bolts under shear loading with edge distance of up to 750mm was proposed.

  • The seismic performance and stability of operating facilities installed in domestic power plants need to be verified because of the increased incidence of earthquakes resulting in power plant damage due to the overturning failure of electric operating facilities. In this study, a structural performance evaluation of the anchor bolts constructed to setup the operating facilities on concrete slabs was carried out through an on-site inspection of power plants, called Daechung-Dam. M10 J hook and M12 J hook anchor bolts were installed in the field unit. According to the ASTM E 488-96 specifications, anchor bolt pullout and shear tests were carried out and compared with the anchor-bolt design standards. The results from the tension and shear pullout tests showed that the M10 and M12 J hook anchor bolts had higher performance than the required design load. Thus, they were found to be safe enough. Nevertheless, more research in the field of analytical study will be needed in the near future.

  • Since the double-deck tunnel is deeply constructed in the city, it is necessary to secure the installation space of air supply and exhaust, escape passage stairs, elevator, distribution facilities and connection tunnels in the vertical shaft for the double-deck tunnel. Also, in order to minimize the effect of construction on adjacent area, it is necessary to construct the concrete structures at high speed in vertical shaft after tunnel excavation. Therefore, the slabs and the stairs in vertical shaft are needed to be constructed using precast concrete, and the rapid construction techniques of bracket for supporting the inner precast structure are needed. The bracket installation methods include cast-in-place concrete, precast concrete and steel. In this study, the improvement of the steel brackets with good economical efficiency and good workability was carried out in consideration of the improvement of the construction speed. We have developed a new bracket that is optimized through bracket shape improvement, anchor bolt position adjustment and quantity optimization. As a result of the structural performance test, it was confirmed that the required load supporting capacity was secured. As a result of structural performance test for bar type anchor bolt and bent anchor anchor bolt, it was confirmed that the required load carrying capacity was secured and that the load bearing capacity of bent anchor bolt was large.

  • It is very important to verify the seismic performance and stability of the power plant fixture in the domestic power plant, because earthquakes have increased in frequency around the world which resulted in the frequent occurrence of power plant damage caused by the failure of electric power facilities. In this study, through the on-site inspection of power plant fixation unit installed in domestic power plants, we carried out structural performance evaluation of the fixation unit anchor bolts installed on the concrete slabs. The field survey showed M12 J hook anchor bolts were used. Anchor bolt pullout and shear performance evaluation were performed based on ASTM E 488-96 standard. Moreover, artificial crack with the width of 0.5 mm was applied during the experiment based on ATM355.4 and ETAG 001. The comparison of M12 J hook anchor bolt pullout and shear test result to design value required in domestic and international design standard, show a satisfactory result. M12 J hook anchor pullout and shear performance was found to be about 35% and 7%, respectively, higher than the required design value.
