  • It will not be an exaggeration to say that one of the most important features of RT (Rapid Tooling) technology is to easy manufacturing complex shape of cooling channel in injection mold. That is, RT technology is hardly influenced complex shape of tool, Therefore, mold designer can optimize the position and shape of cooling channel whatever they want. In this study, we optimized cooling channel through CAE analysis to solve the problem; prototype-connector-mold applied conventional cooling channel, locally warped by internal stress: The effect of three-dimensional cooling channel was supported by simulation result. But it is impossible to produce injection mold applied three-dimensional cooling channel through machining operation. Therefore, we produced the prototype-connector-mold with three-dimensional cooling channel using Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) process, and get good-quality prototype-connector without warpage.

  • For multi-story structural systems, Korean steel industry has fostered development of a steel-concrete composite beam. Configuration of the composite beam is characterized by steel angle shear connectors welded to a U-shaped cold formed-steel beam. Effects of shear connector orientation and spacing were studied to evaluate current application of the angle shear connector design equation in AC495. For the study, interfacial shear resistance behavior was investigated by conducting 24 push-out tests and attuned using unreinforced push-out specimens. Interfacial shear to horizontal slip response was reported along with corresponding failure patterns. Pure shear connector strength was also evaluated by excluding concrete shear contribution, which was estimated in relation to steel beam-slab interface separation or interfacial crack width.

  • Shear connectors are key elements that ensure integrity in a composite system. The primary purpose of a shear connector is to bring a high degree of interaction between composite elements. A wide variety of connectors are available for hot-rolled composite construction, connected to the beam through welding. However, with cold-formed members being very thin, welding of shear connectors is not desirable in cold-formed composite constructions. Shear connectors for cold-formed elements are limited in studies as well as in the market. Hence in this study, three different types of shear connectors, namely, single-channel, double channel, and self-tapping screw, were considered, and their performance assessed by the Push-out test as per Eurocode 4. The connection between channel shear connectors and the beam was made using self-tapping screws to avoid welding. The performance of the connectors was analyzed based on their ultimate capacity, characteristic capacity, ductility, and slippage during loading. Strength to weight ratio was also carried out to understand the proposed connectors' suitability for conventional ones. The results showed relatively higher initial stiffness and ductility for double channel connectors than other connectors. Also, self-tapping screws had a higher strength to weight ratio with low ductility.

  • Mechanical shear connectors are commonly used to transfer longitudinal shear forces across the steel-concrete interface in composite beams. Steel pipe as a new shear connector is proposed in this research and its performance to achieve composite strength is investigated. Experimental monotonic push-out tests were carried out for this connector. Then, a nonlinear finite element model of the push-out specimens is developed and verified against test results. Further, the finite element model is used to investigate the effects of pipe thickness, length and diameter on the shear strength of the connectors. The ultimate strengths of these connectors are reported and their respective failure modes are discussed. This paper comprises of the push-out tests of ten specimens on this shear connector in both the vertical and horizontal positions in different reinforced concretes. The results of experimental tests are given as load-deformation plots. It is concluded that the use of these connectors is very effective and economical in the medium shear demand range of 150-350 KN. The dominant failure modes observed were either failure of concrete block (crushing and splitting) or shear failure of pipe connector. It is shown that the horizontal pipe is not as effective as vertical pipe shear connector and is not recommended for practical use. It is shown that pipe connectors are more effective in transferring shear forces than channel and stud connectors. Moreover, based on the parametric study, a formula is presented to predict the pipe shear connectors' capacity.

  • Structural behavior of built-up compression members with unsymmetric connectors under buckling status has been studied through these experiments. When the distance between adjacent H-300 beams of built-up compression member is 2 m in length, and the H-300 beams are lengthened up to 30 m in length with three-10 m-H-beams by bolts and double arrayed, three specimen having each connector plate, single channel, double channel are experimented for evaluating buckling loads. The buckling loads from the experiments are compared with buckling loads of structural analysis using FEM and buckling loads of Timoshenko Eq. in order to figure out how the connectors' type affects on longitudinal and lateral displacements, also strain of the built-up compression members as well. The result from the experiments show that the buckling loads 4.2% decreases in double channel connectors and 36.6% decreases in single channel connectors than plate connectors.

  • This study is aimed to predict the behaviour of channel shear connectors in composite floor systems at different temperatures. For this purpose, a soft computing approach is adopted. Two novel intelligence methods, including an Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and a Genetic Programming (GP), are developed. In order to generate the required data for the intelligence methods, several push-out tests were conducted on various channel connectors at different temperatures. The dimension of the channel connectors, temperature, and slip are considered as the inputs of the models, and the strength of the connector is predicted as the output. Next, the performance of the ELM and GP is evaluated by developing an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Finally, the performance of the ELM, GP, and ANN is compared with each other. Results show that ELM is capable of achieving superior performance indices in comparison with GP and ANN in the case of load prediction. Also, it is found that ELM is not only a very fast algorithm but also a more reliable model.

  • In the design of composite structures, shear connectors such as headed stud, channel, perforated plate, etc, are commonly used to transfer longitudinal shear forces across the steel-concrete interface. Many researches have been conducted to improve the characteristics of different types of shear connector. This paper presents the results of 11 push-out tests performed on the new perforated rib connectors with shearing bars embedded in concrete slab under static loads. The results obtained from these tests are as following : 1) The bearing plate welded on both sides of perforated rib plate improves the stiffness and strength. 2) The capacity of perforated connectors is influenced primarily by the transverse reinforcements and shearing bars.

  • Due to recent advancements in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computational intelligence, the application of these technologies in the construction industry and structural analysis has been made feasible. With the use of the Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) as a modelling tool, this study aims at predicting the shear strength of channel shear connectors in steel concrete composite beam. A total of 1200 experimental data was collected, with the input data being achieved based on the results of the push-out test and the output data being the corresponding shear strength which were recorded at all loading stages. The results derived from the use of ANFIS and the classical linear regressions (LR) were then compared. The outcome shows that the use of ANFIS produces highly accurate, precise and satisfactory results as opposed to the LR.
