  • In order to improve the performance of a chirp based transmission scheme, the cross-coherence property should be carefully considered. In this paper, we propose two pairs of combinations using multiple linear chirp (MLC) which can reduce the cross-coherence for improving IEEE 802.15.4a chirp spread spectrum systems. The simulation results show that the proposed MLC scheme can improve the performance by considering the cross-coherence.

  • A transient chirp measurement was used to analyze the chirping characteristics of modulator integrated DFB (MI-DFB) laser module. This method measures the wavelength change due to a small variation in modulation with bias. The measurement system includes a monochrometer and digitizing oscilloscope. The chirping characteristics due to packaging influences can also be accounted for. The chirp parameter calculated using this method was compared with the peak-to peak chirp. They showed the same tendency with modulator bias voltage. These results can be used as a reference when optimizing system parameters.

  • In this paper, the adaptive chirp beamforming method is proposed to solve the bias problem in the direction-of-arrivals (DOAs) estimation of the wideband chirp signals which have an identical time-frequency parameter and are emanated from different directions. The source location bias results from the interferences impinging on the array from the other directions. The proposed method exploits the time-frequency structure of the chirp signal based on STMV (STeered Minimum Valiance) to improve the DOA estimation performance by minimizing the chirp interferences effectively. Simulation results show the DOA estimation performance achieved by the proposed method as compared to the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, when we use the chirp signal as input signal of ultrasonic signal system the technique for determining the bandwidth of the chirp signal that maximizes the amplitude of the compressed ultrasonic echo signal has been studied. In ultrasonic signal processing systems, the signal-to-noise ratio of the echo signal can be too low due to damping and scattering of the ultrasonic wave during transmission. Method of pulse compression using chirp signal is a means to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in ultrasonic pulse-echo systems. Simulation and experimental results showed that the output signal of ultrasonic system was increased by pulse width of chirp signal and the optimum-bandwidth of the chirp signal was 1.15 times larger than the bandwidth of the ultrasonic system.

  • While the chirp signal is extensively used in radar and sonar systems for target decision in wireless communication systems, it has not been widely used for positioning in indoor environments. Recently, the IEEE 802.15.4a standard has adopted the chirp spread spectrum (CSS) as an underlying technique for low-power and low-complexity precise localization. Chirp signal based ranging solutions have been established and deployed but their ranging performance has not been analyzed in multipath environments. This paper presents a ranging performance analysis of a chirp signal and suggests a method to suppress multipath error by using a type of non-linear chirp signal. Multipath ranging performance is evaluated using a conventional linear chirp signal and the proposed non-linear chirp signal. We verify the feasibility of both methods using two-ray multipath model simulation. Our results demonstrate that the proposed non-linear chirp signal can successfully suppress the multipath error.

  • A chirp-echo data acquisition and processing system was developed for use as a simplified, PC-based chirp echo-sounder with some data processing software modules. The design of the software and hardware system was implemented via a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Digital signal processing algorithms for driving a single-channel chirp transmitter and dual-channel receivers with independent TVG (time varied gain) amplifier modules were incorporated into the FPGA for better real-time performance. The chirp-echo data acquisition and processing system consisted of a notebook PC, an FPGA board, and chirp sonar transmitter and receiver modules, which were constructed using three chirp transducers operating over a frequency range of 35-210 kHz. The functionality of this PC-based chirp echo-sounder was tested in various field experiments. The results of these experiments showed that the developed PC-based chirp echo-sounder could be used in the acquisition, processing and analysis of broadband acoustic echoes related to fish species identification.

  • Males of the field cricket Teleogryllus emma produce calling songs that are attractive to receptive females. The calling songs of T. emma consist of two components, the long chirp that is composed of up to 12 single pulses, followed by a variable number of short chirps. Based on the analysis of coefficient of variation (CV), temporal characters of the long chirp were less variable than those of the short chirps in male calling songs. To test for phonotactic selectivity of females, we conducted a single-stimulus playback experiment in which five stimuli (standard, long chirp only, long chirp augmented, short chirps only, and short chirps augmented) were used. The standard stimulus included both long and short chirps whose characteristics were derived from the calling songs of field populations. Results of the playback experiment showed that female crickets oriented more frequently toward the stimuli that included the long chirp (standard, long chirp only, and long chirp augmented stimuli) than toward the stimuli lacking the long chirp (short chirps only and short chirps augmented stimuli), indicating that the long chirp in the calling songs was required to elicit positive phonotaxis in the female crickets. The result of CV analysis of the male calling songs and the findings of the female phonotaxis experiment suggested that the long chirp of calling songs may play a role in species recognition in T. emma.

  • This paper proposes a ranging and communicating system that uses the UWB frequency slope modulated chirp signal. Instead of using only the up-chirp and down-chirp with the same frequency sweeping rate, the proposed system uses several chirps that have different frequency sweeping rates with frequency hopping. This system performs better than the conventional communication and ranging schemes because it is capable of increasing the data transmission rate and at the same time decreasing the interference between sequences used by users. In this paper, we propose simulations of UWB communication system to show validity by using the MATLAB.

  • We induced the optimal values of optical phase conjugator (OPC) position and dispersion coefficients of fiber sections depending on frequency chirp, which is substantially generated in optical signal by optical modulator and affects the transmission performances. In order to investigate the relation of optimal parameters with various frequency chirp, in this paper, positive(down) chirp, chirp-free and positive(up) chirp are assumed in 40 Gbps ${\times}$ 16 channels WDM transmission system of NRZ format with extinction ratio of 10 dB, which are the worst system parameters in the factor affecting system performance. It is confirmed that the OPC position offset and dispersion offsets between both fiber sections are more increased as frequency chirp become larger. It is also confirmed that the effect of the induced values on the compensation of WDM channels with negative frequency chirp is better than WDM channels with positive frequency chirp.

  • In this paper, LPI(low probability of intercept) and AJ(anti jamming) performance of the chirped BPSK system are analyzed. In the chirp method the cyclostationary of the signal is eliminated, since the instantaneous frequency is varied randomly within the whole spread bandwidth. Therefore, chirp method is considered for good LPI system against DAM(delay-and-multiplier) or SC (squaring circuit) interceptor which detects the chip rate or carrier frequency. Longer chirp duration makes the LPI performance better. From the simulation results, the chirp method has better AJ performance than DS(direct sequence) system in the PBNJ(partial band noise jammer) channel. At the same JSR(jammer to signal power ratio) level, chirped BPSK system has more robust AJ performance against MTJ(multi-tone jammer) than PBNJ.
