  • Objective : Electroacupuncture is one of the primary remedies in oriental medicine. Elecroacupuncture was applied on a nocturia patient. Improvement of the symptoms was experienced. This case is reported in order to derive further studies evaluating the effectiveness of this treatment. Methods : Electroacupuncture on the Ciliao acupoint(BL32) was performed twice daily for 1 week. Results : After about 1 week of electroacupuncture on the Ciliao acupoint(BL32), there was a remarkable decrease of nocturia frequency. Conclusion: We present the case of a mao with an overactive bladder who had several stokes as well as hypertension. Electroacupuncture treatment performed on the Ciliao acupoint(BL32) remarkably improved nocturia.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture at ciliao(BL32) on voiding pattern and uroflowmetry of patients with functional voiding disease. Methods Subjects were voluntarily recruited by newspaper·s and internet. All the subjects were confirmed as International Prostatism Symptom Score(IPSS), uroflowmetry, voiding diary, symptom. The acupuncture therapy was performed 3 times a week for 3 weeks by oriental medical doctor at hospital. Acupuncture points were BL32. The patient's symptoms were assessed before and after 3 weeks treatments by IPSS. Uroflowmetry for 5minutes and voiding diary for 48 hours was measured before and after 3 weeks treatments. Results : The results were as follows; 1. After 3 weeks compared to the pre-treatment, IPSS(QOL) scores were significantly unproved. 2. After 3 weeks compared to the pre-treatment, mean voiding volume, min voiding volume and mean voiding time on voiding daiary was significantly improved. 3. After 3 weeks compared to the pre-treatment, max flow velocity and mean flow velocity on uroflowmetry in spite of increase of voiding volume show a statistically significant difference. 4. Acupunctue had hardly some side effect compared to operation and medicines and was economical. Conclusion : This study suggests that acupuncture treatments can be applicable to improve symptoms in the patients with functional voiding disease. Further study on the acupuncture and other acupoints in the patients with functional voiding disease is recommended.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this report is a study on the correlation between parasympathetic nerve system and Back-shu points. Methods : We have studied about the correlation between anatomical distribution of parasympathetic nerve system and that of Back-shu points. Back-shu points are located on the back area as the acupoints of Bladder Meridian(BL), doing its own organic physical and pathological working and directly connected with its own organ. Results and Conclusions : 1. It is suggested that Back-shu points has correlation with parasympathetic nerve system could be Pangguanshu(BL28), Zhonglushu(BL29), Baihuanshu(BL30), Ciliao(BL32), Zhongliao(BL33), Xialiao(BL34), Shangliao(BL31), Xiaochangshu(BL27), Baohuang,(BL53) Zhibian(BL54) etc. 2. We proved acupuncture treatment on the nearby spinal area could be one of the method that could stimulate parasympathetic nerve system. 3. The symptom of parasympathetic nerve system's disorder is similar to Back-shu points' chief efficacy a lot. And we proved the Back-shu points which has relation with parasympathetic nerve system as distribution of nerve system are only located at sacral area.

  • The purpose of this case study is to report the effect of electroacupuncture at acupoints Baliao (BL31 Shangliao, BL32 Ciliao, BL33 Zhongliao, BL34 Xialiao) on patients with voiding problem. Neurogenic Bladder can be classified according to whether impairment of urinary reservoir or emptying. The first case was a patient with urinary emptying impairment. He was diagnosed with areflexic neurogenic bladder, and was managed with suprapubic cystostomy. After starting of electroacupuncture on Baliao, residual urine volume was gradually decreased, at last cystostomy could be removed. The second case was a patient with urinary reservoir impairment. She complained symptoms of urinary frequency, nocturia due to overactive bladder. After starting of electroacupuncture on Baliao, urination frequency was significantly decreased. We consider electroacupuncture on Baliao may have a useful effect on voiding problem, both urinary reservoir and emptying impairment.
